3 pointsI see it more as a meta-theory about how magic works. Basically, it puts the center of power in the individual instead of external authorities or powers, such as God, gods, planets, archons, correspondences, etc. So if you can invoke a proper state of mind summoning Cthulhu, it doesn't matter whether or not here is an external being that matches it. I don't think it (or any magical system) generally works because I don't think most people honestly think it will work. I think the mental habits need to be a bit more fluid than average.

2 pointsThe common tactic among Western teachers is to take the simplest practice possible, overcomplicate it with made-up nonsense, create artificial barriers, and then sell it in tiny pieces for as long as they can. If they didn’t do this, they’d run out of material to teach in a week or a month. I’ve seen Damien “Standing Post aka Zhan Zhuang” course. For about 6–8 hours he teaches almost nothing of value with 99% of the information tied to basic physical posture. He has zero knowledge of the energetic aspects of the practice, no understanding of the upper and lower channels, and he clearly has no clue that you need a specific mental state and develop meditation skills to gain any real benefit from the posture itself. It’s basically like a kindergartener stealing a high-school math textbook written in a foreign language, ripping out all the important chapters, and then teaching other kids how to draw carrots and cucumbers so they can count to 10. In Chinese tradition it's very common to just give students the basic stuff like physical postures and hold back the real 99% of valuable info until the person proves they're trustworthy, loyal, hardworking, talented, etc. That's why you get all these "early graduates" who basically got kicked out by Teacher. The simplest way to ditch someone annoying is to pump up their ego: "You've learned everything, you're a master now, go spread the word!"

2 pointsApologies if I am repeating anything here, a bit late to the party but tried to have a good read through. I spent a lot of years in this scene and most chaos magicians would describe it as a type of paradigm surfing, as in imagine that the sky is green for a day and work with that and see the results, then jump to something else. But in reality when the rubber meets the road it appears to be more just an eclectic system and has the pop culture aspect where you can work with pop culture spirits and artifacts. My favourite book on the subject is Hands on Chaos Magic by Andrieh Vitimus. It still suffers from the same issue as most other Western magic systems as it lacks a body method to safely channel and ground energy which is where I place myself in the Tai Chi/Qigong world, supporting occultists in this way. Just a little aside on the subject of the HGA; if you haven't seen it watch the movie 'A Dark Song', it's a fictionalised take on the Abramelin ritual. One of the most powerful endings to a movie I've ever seen, still absolutely blown away by it and have to take a while to gather myself after watching. Happy Saturday all!

1 pointI do see the Dao De Jing as one person's metaphysical, philosophical, treatise. One that has many layers and meanings for the reader, regardless of where they are, among the food chain.

1 pointYou don't NEED to, no. Most people I have met on the spiritual path either want to stop their suffering/struggle, or understand the nature of realty. That's when seeking understanding would be advantageous. Whatever a psychopath brings to your life is already part of your experience. You are misunderstanding what "Oneness" means in this context. It is, in it's least complicated explanation, a change of perspective about how the world is. Oneness is the most salient characteristic of the conventional world of separateness, once you can see it. They aren't two things, but in fact have alway been one. It is two ways of looking at the same thing, once there is the available perspective to do so. The Tao IS this "Oneness" that is being alluded to. To be in "alignment" with the "Tao" is to be one with the 10,000 things. What do you mean by the "heart"?

1 pointintersting because i think your describing something that I have done many times without knowing what it was... and it always did feel like what your describing... i always would just say being kind or smiling at someone can change their day but maybe it was more then that. I've also had the saying of "this little light of mine" right which was inside me and showing it to others seemed to be helpeful... that was just my uneducated sorta way of describing it. But it might have been me knowing something or doing something more and not realizing it...

With right intent it is possible to function cleanly within the Oneness. Right intent, in my view is the primary precondition for the third stage enlightenment

The vast majority of content written on the topic is 2003 and later. Almost as if Jurassic Park's chaos theory reference was what was needed for it to go mainstream.

1 pointThis book, which I read way back when, made quite an impression at the time. Among other things it was my first encounter with the concept of self-similarity, and I later found it quite fascinating when I started encountering this fundamental principle underlying the structure of reality all over taoism (tao fa ziran). It is a "popular science" book, but IMO it has more to do with "how magic works" than what "chaos magic" sources have to say on the subject.

A mysterious Eastern guest had arrived at Famusov’s house — Master Sosan, a man who spoke little, and when he did speak, no one understood how he managed it. Famusov decided this was some fashionable exotic curiosity and immediately invited all his acquaintances. After all, if someone speaks in riddles, he must be a philosopher — and philosophers are excellent for showing off in front of guests. 1. The Arrival of Chatsky Chatsky, returning to Moscow earlier than usual, walked into Famusov’s house just in time to witness the guests puzzling over Master Sosan’s first phrase: “When the mind seeks support, it falls. When it seeks nothing, it stands.” Famusov scratched his temple and whispered to Skalozub: “Seems to me he’s talking about fortifications.” Skalozub nodded gravely, deciding the phrase concerned a military stance. But Chatsky, of course, stepped forward: “To stand without support is to be honest with oneself! To be a human being, not a puppet pulled by tradition, submissiveness, and fear!” Sosan looked at him calmly, as one looks at the wind that makes noise without trying to be heard. “A noisy mind is a mind that believes in its own truth,” the master said. “Noise!” Sofia exclaimed loudly, appearing in the doorway. “How true! Our dear Chatsky only makes noise, noise…” She said it deliberately loudly — so that he would hear. Chatsky flushed. 2. A Parade of Wit and Emptiness The guests gathered around the master. Prince Tugoukhovsky asked: “Tell us, respected sir… do you teach that one should not strive toward reason?” “A mind that strives to become great contracts. A mind that does not cling to itself expands and sees everything.” Tugoukhovsky, having misheard, replied confidently: “Well, expanding in society is not customary.” Sosan nodded: “Exactly.” The crowd hummed with admiration — what a great wisdom! Famusov beamed — such a rare Eastern philosopher in his house! Chatsky, however, boiled with irritation: “So you mean to say that everything is nothing? That the mind is merely empty chatter? What about progress, truth, honor?” Master Sosan looked at him with gentle sadness: “Truth does not make noise. Only those who argue about it do.” The phrase hung in the air like silence after a storm. 3. Sofia and the Shadow of Words When the guests left, Sofia approached the master. “Tell me, is it possible to stop hearing the noise of the mind?” “It is possible. But one cannot force silence to arrive.” Sofia thought for a moment. “So Alexei Stepanovich (she meant Molchalin, of course) is right to stay silent?” “Silence and fear are different things,” the master replied softly. She felt uncomfortable. 4. Meeting of Two Fires Later Chatsky finally approached him. “I’m not seeking enlightenment, you know. I’m seeking common sense. But it seems to me you undermine the very foundation — thought itself!” Sosan smiled: “You love thought too much to hear its root.” “And what is the root?” “That which does not think. That which sees. That which remains when the argument ends.” Chatsky wanted to reply — but something strange happened: the monologue that so easily burst out of him suddenly lost its thread. Words approached his lips and melted like snow on a palm. Sosan stood. “Moscow is noisy. But there is emptiness in noise as well. You will find it — when you stop trying to convince others.” He left. 5. Famusov’s Epilogue When the master departed, Famusov summed up: “An extraordinary man! Apparently said a lot. And what exactly — no one understood. That means he’s very clever!” “Or very free,” Chatsky muttered. But Famusov no longer heard him. Nor did Moscow. Only deep within Chatsky, for the first time, echoed the phrase: “When the mind seeks support — it falls.” And he, without meaning to, for the first time in a long while… fell silent.

Late 1970s – early 1980s: The loose network called the Illuminates of Thanateros (IOT) was formed (initially as a mail-based pact in 1978–79), becoming the first formal chaos magic organisation. So the commonly accepted “birth year” of chaos magic as a self-conscious movement is 1978, with the publication and private circulation of Liber Null and The Book of Results.(For context, Austin Osman Spare’s sigil techniques from the early 20th century and Discordianism in the 1960s are important precursors, but chaos magic proper begins in 1978 with Carroll, Sherwin, and their circle explicitly branding and systematising the approach.)
