Why I am against 'powers'

Recommended Posts

They're almost always at the right place, at the right time. Very often you don't need super powers to do that.. Just a good head on your shoulders.

You can win a thousand battles, but only lose one ;)

Not putting down self development. If you want to further yourself in one way that can protect you, that's not exactly a crime.

Hey, I wanna help other people too! :P

If you come across it down the path, there's not much wrong with practicing it. May be something wrong with basing your entire lifes work on it though.

Don't see anything wrong with it. At the very least, there are a lot worse things!

May find yourself sitting on the wrong mountain top. Peering over the others climbing the mountain "you" were meant to.

Unless you had the power to know which mountain top is the one you have to go up ;)

Limited experience. :ninja:

I'd be quite interested in hearing about it, if you don't mind sharing ;)

Don't make assumptions about powers, about people who have power, or about people who seek power! :)

My view on power has changed a lot, I think it is very important that people realise their own personal power and liberate their energy so that they have the strength to break their conditioning and raise their level of being, you think about all the forces social and planetary which try to keep you asleep you will need enormous power to break free from that, so there is a healthy approach to gaining power. But also the destructive side of wishing to gain power which I think is far more common even with a lot of spiritual practitioners is that people seek it in order to avoid being made to feel powerless, which is infact a rejection of reality and a cause of far more suffering. So I guess it's all about motivation.

How about you go embrace your powerlessness when someone is punching your face in, stabbing you with a knife, or threatening your family, friends, or loved ones, or currently harming them.

Who is more powerful?

Once upon a time there was a conquering army going through villages, killing and pillaging as it went. The soldiers caused terror in the hearts of the people in the countryside, and were especially harsh with the monks they found in the monasteries, not only humiliating them but often subjecting them to terrible physical torture.

"There was one particularly harsh army captain who was infamous for his cruelty, and when he arrived in a certain town, he asked his adjutant for a report about the people who lived there. His inferior reported: All the people are very frightened of you and are bowing down to you." This gave the captain great pleasure, of course. Then the adjutant continued, "In the local monastery all the monks have fled to the mountains in terror. Except for one monk.

"Hearing this, the captain became furious and rushed to the monastery in search of the monk who dare to defy him. When he pushed open the gates, there in the middle of the courtyard stood the monk, watching him without fear. The captain walked up to him and asked in his haughtiest voice, "Don't you know who I am? Why, I could take my sword and run it through your belly without blinking an eye!

"And don't you know who I am?" replied the monk, gently. "I could have your sword run through my belly without blinking an eye." It is said that the captain, recognizing the greater truth of the moment, sheathed his sword, bowed, and left."

Excellent point, powers are really nothing more than a form of super health! also I think the point of all this talk about 'wanting' depends on:

If you want power for it's own sake that can backfire but not necessarily (depends on purity of heart, doesn't it?).

If instead you go at it for the purpose of improving your own health and what motivates you is to assist others, aaaand if your interest in powers is more out of curiosity and fun; then that is the 'pure' way.

Perhaps, perhaps the mountain top for most has no correlation with power.

Just saying.

Yeah just to add my random 2cents. I believe power in and of itself is neither good nor bad, It's we that define such concepts. For example we may use our "powers" to heal and support and protect others; or we could get caught up in unrealistic fantasies(hurting others to feel "cool") and have to learn the hard way.

Ultimately I think powers speed up our progress spiritually by forcing us to face reality. For example we may harbor the fantasy of being a "villain" badass because we saw it on TV and for some reason think that if we act like them then we'll feel as cool and good as TV portrayed them to be. We may think it's "cool" to have powers because the media told us so, when in reality it makes us feel more isolated and more of a "freak" because of them. I'm not saying any of these are universal truths but by getting exactly what we "think" we want it does show us that we are often mistaken in our beliefs on things because we have so many unconscious ideas about the world that we receive from the media and our peers/family that are based on hearsay and thus possibly false. Truth, imho, isn't in what we read or what we hear from others, it's what we experience for ourselves. Some of us may be raised with porn and we may be taught it's fun and cool and raised with that belief until we learn to experience things unbiased and then maybe after taking a break to get a new perspective or going back and forth to experience fully both sides we may decide it's not for us.

Do you think it's wrong to pursue powers to test how strong you can get? Does curiosity fall under the label of "good" or "bad"? I'd think as long as you weren't trying to show off or kill anybody you'd be fine. powers I think are okay as long as you don't abuse them.

But thank you for the story SFJane, I think alot of us (I know I) can relate to this :)

I agree with Jane as far as I understand her. I prefer to think of abilities rather than powers.

Now, I can move my eyes independently. It fascinates some people, makes many physically ill, and awes the impressionable. What good is it? None, except as a test of their reactions. I can also do some less-visible Yogi tricks, but I would trade it all a hundred times over for the peace of mind Jane knows. In my estimation, that's REAL magic. Not that the techniques are "magic" but that it is possible at all.

But I have to say...the scene in X3 where the Phoenix blasts the 1000-ton vault door off its hinges and walks out...be still my heart.

I know supporters don't want to hear this, but if psychic powers were documentable in the least then the whole world would know about it. It would not be a secret. Large portions of the population would spend their lives practicing. Before responding in objection, think about the argument and see if it actually makes any sense.
