Only time I ever do above 20 minutes a time is when teaching.

That said I only do and teach the 8 Strands Silk Brocade QiGong these days.

As one gets older ( I am old) the sitting meditation side increases as the 'doing' side, of necessity; decreases.

Anybody who is fit enough to put in above an hour a day deserves respect and encouragement.

I used to cultivate ( bagua MA) for hours a day every week, every year and enjoyed it.

That was my main 'hobby' , passion and pastime.

Comes a time though when you just have to do less physically and more mindfully.

LOL I agree.

My "Stand up/Doing" has decreased significantly as I got old(er)

I powerlift, and spar, hit the bag, stretch and yoga, so my standing meditation at night usually is Goat or Gimasae stance and compression for about 30+ minutes.

Full lotus though can go up to 3 hours- sometimes almost 4 hours- that trance takes me somewhere like suspended animation. When I "wake up" my body joints pop, eyes blurry, shaking, etc

Sitting is usually 2- 2 1/2 hours though

I have unlimited time now.

Others don't.

Raising a family, working, general responsibilities are restricting.

Priorities is what we make them.

When I was younger, my friends partied, and I stayed home and trained.

Then they wondered how come I could easily beat all of them up lol.

We don't own a TV around here.

We have a lot of books though :)

I'm 47.

I feel stronger, faster and fitter than I have ever been.

I'm takin' it easy this week though.

Last month I went a bit mad.

Someone accused me of lacking energy!

So I upped my push up and stomach curl reps to 311+ each.

I was doing four to six a day of each of those.

That's why I have a little ache in my shoulders now if I type too much in this uncomfortable (for typing) position.

I mean, I shake, I rattle, I roll, I stretch and dance and walk and twirl and make tea whenever I am not sittin' an' rockin'.

Now I seem to be going on less and less food and sleep.

A student went to see a Zen master and declared he wanted to become a master himself and asked how low long would it take him? The teacher replied: “Ten years.”

The student, a bit impatient and not satisfied with the answer went ahead and said: "But I want to master it faster than that, I will work every hard, practice 10 or more hours a day if necessary. How long would it THEN take?" The teacher replied: “Twenty years.”

If someone told me it would only take 10 years to master their system, I would wonder what they left out, and how watered down it was....

Anybody can learn the '8 strands' moves we do in about half an hour.

After that it gets a bit tricky though.

The 'Gong's' OK , it's knowing what to do with the Qi and how.

I've been at it for years and still not got it completely 'right' yet.

Maybe next time around.

The combining is seldom talked of because it is dangerous, and people go mad trying.

It is in the void that the freeing and combining of Dan Tiens take place, that where they connect through, so to speak.

The void is used to free attachments, It strips you bare from any and all attainment, the risk being you never make it back.

The void is at the edge of chaos, the chaos realm which connects all things, the only way there is through the void.

Which is why it is important to certain the time has come, for the sake of sanity.

Incorporating anatta and metta into daily practice can prepare you to use the void.

Point them out, :)

Or perhaps you could explain how to free the Dan Tiens without the void.

Obviously yanking on it hasn't worked.

In the void you cease having a soul and become one.

It's an attainment in non-attainment through only loss.

Most people don't want to lose their soul, they like having it far too much.

I tried teachin' im mr sonofthegods.

I am sad to say it would appear he does me no credit.

Perhaps because he gives me no credit.

No matter.

Maybe he just wasn't into a little crazy wizdom wizard wayz.

110% crazy wizdom I should say.

About a zillion timez too subtle for 'im I reckon.

But then, sometimes I'm too subtle fer meself.

Ya know, I'm not at all sure I am suited to teaching, xactly.

Not really.

But I must be of service.

There must be someone to whom I can give the benefit.

/sighs, breathes deep and keeps a totally straight face...

Teaching in silence is maybe the best kind of teaching.

Not just that spiffy idea of 'transmission' in a satsang- type situation or zazen- etc context but in a mundane way too.

Sometimes the less a regular actually teacher says in class, the more the student learns because s/he has to begin and study to fill in the gaps.

To think for oneself rather than just soak in what teacher tells you to think.

Good teachers facilitate individuals' flourishing.

Less good teachers use the 'mug and jug' method , seeing themselves as the jug full of knowledge and the poor student as the empty mug to be filled up with teacher's words of wisdom.

Discovery beats sermons every time.

I've been trying to tell a certain student this ever since he started! He doesn't beleive me *sigh*.

hmm

Sharing/getting some thoughts here

On the one hand I know what hours a day of different types of qigong/meditation etc are

and yeh it does good

But I firmly believe, see and feel life to already naturally be a form of cultivation.

I could say that Im kinda lucky cos I dont work/wont work haah but kinda get paid for certain things I do

But even when I watch TV, its like synchronicity and the perfect thing comes on

It blows up my ideas or gives me insight into things and ideas that block me etc

Every action, thought, word focuses energy onto energetic areas of the body

Like creativity focuses the third eye or throat or something or heart

I think its all about keeping in alignment with the soul

I remember when I used to do an hour or two of a certain type of qigong and do it all tense, and with a certain intention which kind of blocked my heart/soul, made me unrelaxed

and I remember one day a couple of years ago, all I did was read the tao te ching and walk around like I was drunk, so relaxed and high.

So yeh spending too much time cultivating can block the heart

because one has certain intentions which are coming from a fear or unrelaxed intention

Its probably a lot to do with intention

Like doing a little cultivation, and making the rest of ones life a form of cultivation too

skydog, you made a great point here. the natural state you spend your life in has a huge amount to do with cultivation, which is the point of training in the first place, right? when i practice chi gong in the morning, my entire day is magical; same if i read something inspiring, or whatever.

i also think a huge amount has to do with what you believe will happen. i made the "mistake" of reading a book by paul dong called empty force, where he actually laid out how much training is necessary to get fa jin - about 3-6 hours a day, every single day for 3-5 years, and it helps if you're a dude if you don't ejaculate.

this was helpful because it made me realize there is actually a threshold, vs. a lot of people being like "just train bagua for 70 years" or something, which is the most unhelpful thing to say ever.
