Spiritual Hygiene

Recommended Posts

Is the practice of spiritual hygiene similar to karma in terms of cause and effect?

Except where karma is more linear in nature, spiritual hygiene is more of a dice roll?

This has been on my mind. As far as I know taoists do not subscribe directly to karma.

Instead they encourage spiritual hygiene. Which is similar to karma but a little different?

Spiritual hygiene to me, means not filling your head with false nonsense, and not wasting your life with fake practices.

Demanding good hard objective evidence, and only listening to teachers and systems that can provide that.

By spiritual hygiene, what I mean is.

The old practice where taoists would travel the countryside & do good deeds.

They would heal people and try to do positive and good things.

As part of maintaining their own personal healthy spiritual hygiene.

Am I getting the concept wrong? I would be interested to know.

You're excluding yourself?  That's excellent progress.

Hi Daniel,

Since you have my email, you are more than welcome to email me and we can discuss this in private.

Unfortunately per the site rules I can't discuss this on this forum, even in a DM.

Remember when Richard Dawkins followers prided themselves on "demanding evidence".

I wonder where Dawkins and his "demand evidence" followers are now.

I (usually) demand evidence for nothing.

All answers can be self deduced via basic knowledge of history and science.

Those who demand evidence are usually those who lack literacy in all areas.

They depend upon the literate to explain things.

Not a good position for them nor society.

Demanding evidence is a position of subservience and dependence.

I prefer people doing more to educate and inform themselves.

Rather than believe scientists, experts or anyone in blind faith.

A person at a restaurant.

Has no need to demand someone read them the menu.

If they can read for themselves.

You realize that EVIDENCE is the exact opposite of FAITH right?

Evidence trends near to fact.

Faith is closer to theory.

The two do not exist in the same space but it is inaccurate to say they are opposites.

BTW respond to my restaurant analogy.

I'm close to Kakapo's understanding but a little different.

Spiritual hygiene to me is not filling your head with nonsense, real or not.

Truth is less important to me, if a lie moves my progress along.   I get that from my Aikido sensei, who'd say Everything I teach you is a lie, but a necessary one.

The Speech

"..Just because something isn't true that's no reason you can't believe in it. Sometimes the things that may or may not be true are the things a man needs to believe the most. That good always triumphs over evil. Honor, courage and virtue mean everything. That money and power. Power and money mean nothing."

I'm a believer in the power of Karma yoga.  Doesn't take traveling the world or doing great or mystical things.  It's giving your time to help others.  It benefits them, helps us manage our ego and see the world with better perspective.

<edit> <didn't fully get Cobie quote>I've  played both sides of the game.  I've found, like Elwood P. Dowd said '“In this world … you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant.”

Obviously for some things, maybe most in the tic toc world you want to know the 'truth'.  Though most often it's a truth, not thee truth.

Right or wrong too many cling to It as a gospel.  They become isms, willing to die or kill for their 'truth' or less dramatically waste time on forums defending their truth.  OUTRAGED by other opinions.  Seems juvenal.  (not that my worst self hasn't engaged in its fair share)

I hold the truths, my truths, loosely, at least when I'm smart.  There are not-truths I also hold, again loosely and they give me great pleasure and improve my life.  Often ultra-rationalists turn dogmatic and don't age well.
