By "hot-botton," did you mean hot button or hot bottom?  In either case my curiosity is peaked.

I was thinking hot-button.  l was opining about a legal development that seems strangely dystopian to me, though I suspect it will find favor with the upcoming generation of hot bottoms. (Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act 2021 (legislation.gov.uk)

Hate Crime is straight from Orwell.  In "1984" it was called "thoughtcrime," and our beloved spying devices were "telescreens" there, and so on.  All those Newspeak terms are being continuously slightly renamed (while remaining fully recognizable --- to me anyway) by the Ministry of Truth, but the goal is identical -- "a boot stamping on a human face forever."

It´s baffling to me that anyone would think this is OK.  The takeaway for marginalized groups is "we don´t think you have a strong enough sense of  self to deal with the world."  Talk about a hateful message.

Orwell wrote 1984 after working in the British Information Ministry and far from being a reflection of Soviet Russia it was actually a reflection on what Britain and the West would become if we were not careful.  It was originally titled 1948 but the publishers thought that this would frighten the readers.

If you want to know who rules ask yourself who you cannot criticize!  Our leaders live in an unreal world which bears little or no relation to what people actually think.  Legislation like this is designed to prop up their fantasy version of reality - which is why it has the tone of threat and violence about it.

Part of the trouble with this kind of law is that people aren´t clear about where the boundaries are and will likely self-censor to keep themselves safe.  Even if nobody actually goes to prison, the threat of legal action throws a pall over free speech.  J. K. Rowling´s celebrity may be protective; the authorities know that imprisoning her would cause a huge stir.  I suspect ordinary people will be more vulnerable.

police Scotland don’t want to defend their crap law against a multimillionaire who can afford the best legal team - they would rather pick in poor person who cannot defend themselves.  It’s a bullies charter for government overreach.

There's nothing stranger than current events.  

 

Although this thread was named after "Stranger Things" the TV series and I originally thought of it as a depository of facts, well, stranger than ordinary, or stranger than fiction, or stranger in a strange land, that kind of stuff.  The strangeness of current events, however, is ordinary; mostly belongs to the realm of fiction (far as the way they're being reported is concerned); and stranger in a strange land -- that's currently all of us, even those born and raised.

No way out of this, neither dead nor alive.  I expect even thought conceptualizations will thus forcibly be moved accordingly, - perfidious -  neither free speech, nor free thought might remain. Regardless of the topic. (Just remember a few years back or take a look at a different country that now experiences similar sanctions.) 
Nothing will remain. If it’s experienced. Oblivion seems to be the only solid answer. Sitting and forgetting - strangely - might be the only sane reaction to this.
