Mirin Dajo - Man with ability to withstand swords pushed right through his body

Recommended Posts

From about 1945 to 1948, Mirin Dajo (real name: Arnold Gerrit Henskes) demonstrated on many occasions that he could have rapiers and swords passed right through his chest from back to front or vice versa, or right through his lower abdomen, passing through various internal organs, and not have any noticeable bleeding either externally or internally or any other apparent ill effects. One one occasion he was observed and tested by some doctors while doing this, including having an X-Ray done that showed the sword passing right through his body. When the sword was removed, he would press on the entrance and exit wounds for a short time and that was all he apparently needed to do to prevent any bleeding after the sword was removed. He even demonstrated that he could walk and jog both when the sword was in him and almost right away after the sword was removed as well. Very freaky. Don't watch this video if you are squeamish. ;)

You can read some more about this guy here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirin_Dajo

He apparently died several days after 'voices' instructed him to swallow a steel needle, which he did and then had surgically removed. One explanation might be that maybe the guy was being controlled and protected by spirits or some such thing, if you believe that such things are possible, until those voices told him to swallow the steel needle. Then his amazing invulnerability seemed to have disappeared. It was apparently even claimed that he allowed himself to be shot in the head twice with a gun, but I don't know if there is any decent evidence to support that.

So, what do you think? Were spirits interacting and protecting this guy (something like the people in the East who can withstand fire and sharp knives when they claim they are under the influence of 'spirits'), or what do you think? Just an extraordinary ability to control internal bleeding and heal very fast? A very strange ability at any rate... ;)

"Mirin Dajo was a very religious man and some media outlets labeled him a "Messiah." His sideshow displays were often concluded with a lecture and a message of peace. During his act he took to being impaled by three hollow skewers. He would then pump water through those skewers to become a human fountain. "

If he was a yogi, it is possible he left his body and the body you are seeing now is his Tulka, or materialized spirit form.

Seriously doubt he attained celestial immortal.

Well he did seem to have a regular physical body. It's just that he didn't seem to bleed or have any other noticeable ill effects after being run through with swords many times. Another thing that seems quite odd to me is that in the video he has the rapier pushed right through both his left chest and then after the right chest area, which I would think there is a good chance it should have punctured both his lungs, yet he seemed to suffer no problems from doing so. I have no idea how he was able to do it, but it sure is strange. ;)

I read about this some time ago.

Apparently he put these rapiers always through the same spots. Some kind of scar tissue tube had developed.

So while very remarkable feats, I'm not sure that this has got anything to do with energetic or spiritual cultivation.

But I might know only a part of the story.

Hello flyinghigh. Without knowing a source it is impossible to evaluate something that may have been written about him like that.  People do speculate all sorts of things when it comes to oddities like this, but in the video you can see that he has quite a few different puncture wounds on his back in different locations, so it  does at least appear that he used a number of different locations for inserting the rapiers and swords.

Piercings.

Old trick.

Some do smaller ones and put through arm steel skewers.

Funny, but with iron shirt qigong we would be more looking to repel the swords so that they would not be able to pierce body.

So we would bend the sword against an eye, or show that it could not puncture the neck no matter how many people pushing it, etc.

And then showing show how soft our skin really is.

That is old time demonstration - many have seen this kind of thing in qigong demonstrations.

Interesting perspective VonKrankenhaus, but I am pretty sure that people allowing other people to push rapiers and swords right through their chest and abdomen is not too likely an 'old trick'. Doctors did verify that this man was really pushing the rapiers and swords right through his chest and abdomen areas, which is shown in the video. I think there is quite a difference between what is demonstrated in these videos and what some people do when they push thin metal skewers through their arms or hand or cheeks and tongue, and that sort of thing. Can you point to any other person who you know of who has deliberately taken rapiers and swords right through their chest and abdomen and not had any obvious bleeding or suffered any obvious ill consequences after? I suspect that you probably can't, but I have an open mind. :) What this guy was demonstrating, apparently on a number of occasions, I would think would probably cause some serious consequences for the average person, unless they were very lucky. In the least there is probably a strong risk of suffering serious internal or external bleeding as well, which for most any person would require immediate medical attention to address after being stabbed through like that.

The tube idea doesn't make sense. they would have to insert the swords with machine like precision.

Agreed. Even if the guy inserting the swords was an expert on anatomy, the risks of doing at least some serious internal damage or causing serious internal bleeding seem pretty high to me, but I am no expert. A strange case to be sure. ;)

Hello Nungali. I have no idea if that is just tricks or not, but it sure looks freaky. Apparently that is the Anaang tribe (AKA Annang) in Nigeria in Africa, and this type of ceremony is apparently associated with their Ekpo secret society, from what some people commented. I personally would have to see statements from doctors or scientists that attest that they confirmed that it wasn't a trick before I could rule out tricks however. With Mirin Dajo, doctors did confirm that the rapier really did pass right through his body.

Here are some of the comments taken from people who commented on that Anaang video:

"He actually raised shoulders, and put the sword back of the neck and that man was to keeps skin look like the sword is inside...this is fake"

"This is not "magic"... this is African Traditional Religion. This is an Ogun ceremony. Ogun is the Yoruba Deity who rules over all metals.. especially knives. In Africa, Ogun's colors are recognized as the RED of blood and the RED of Palm Oil... in Santeria the colors are green and black... These men are obvoiusly OGUN Priests under "possession" of the Orisa (Deity)."

"This is real but it is not magic. They enter a trance like state and through breathing techniques are able to control pulse and blood flow. I am very much ashamed that these practices continue and is a contributing factor to Nigeria's social decline"

"Here is the word of this video posting: Ekpo is not Yoruba nor Igbo nor Magic etc. This Video is EKPO of the ANNANG tribe from Afaha Obong, Abak, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Ekpo is a socio-cultural and quassi religious cult in Annang land. The event seen here was staged for a commercial video production. For context, the full video is available at some online stores."

"This is SIMPLE thing if you understand "African Culture"..... Africans can transform magically metal into leaves... they can cut their tong and put it back .... they can cut the belly and heal it in 1 minute ...they can heal bone fractures in less than 5 days.. they can travel between two towns distant of more than 100 miles in few seconds without taking car or plane or walking..... you can walk in the rain without being wet... all this powers are kept SECRET.... "

As you can see, various people have different ideas about what they are seeing in this video. Without some in person verification from doctors or scientists about whether tricks are involved or not, I would have to reserve trying to draw any conclusions. It could certainly possibly be a trick however, as we know stage illusionists do similar astounding illusions all the time. If it is not a trick, then I have to wonder why the insertion and removal of the knives was not shown in the video clip as well, but perhaps the original video the clip was taken from provides and shows more detail. :)

From the skepticblog:

"

Professional magicians have offered explanations of their own. They believe it’s real, and that Dajo had simply learned a mental technique for coping with the trauma. Dajo often told of having visited India and learned from fakirs, mystics who perform similar but much less dramatic feats. Generally speaking, performers who do self-mutilation are actually doing what they appear to be doing; they’re just well practiced, well disciplined, and used to it. But nobody had ever heard of a case as dramatic as Mirin Dajo. Studying from the fakirs was as plausible an explanation as anyone could come up with.

And though it has the sound of a bogus cover story, it may indeed be the way he learned how to do what he did. Some fakirs would pierce their own bodies in the same way that westerners pierce their ears or other body parts. When you do this, it creates what’s called a fistula, a tunnel of scar tissue. So long as you keep the fistula open by having something inserted through it, like an earring, it won’t close up. Modern doctors and bodypiercing professionals agree that’s probably how Dajo did it. Little by little, he and his assistant would drive a sharp object a little further into a hole in his abdomen, leaving it in place, letting it heal, and then driving it in a little further. Photos of Dajo’s back show it riddle with scars and holes, which are probably failed fistulas where their efforts were blocked by bones, nerves, major organs, or something too painful to get past. Eventually Danjo had at least four fistulas that went all the way through. He probably lived with metal bars inserted through them all the time, and when it came time for a performance, these were removed. His assistant had only to carefully slide the fencing foils through the fistulas at the proper angles, as they’d practiced together many times.

And thus were the doctors fooled, the magicians stumped, and the audiences thrilled. It was perhaps not the best career choice, though, as Dajo died at age 35 from an aortic rupture, resulting from swallowing a long steel needle. Guess the fakirs hadn’t clued him in on that one."

Hello Nungali. I have watched that 'Mirin Dajo Explained' video as well, and while it brings up some interesting points, I don't think it can really fully account for what Mirin Dajo was doing. He was basically perforating himself in a number of places on many occasions with not only rapiers, but a sword is also used in the video I included a link to in my original post. I don't think any normal person could have done the same without some serious ill effects. He may have just been using special mind control to control his bleeding and healing, but even if that is the case I think it is still pretty impressive. Even people who are stabbed with small knives in the body can suffer serious bleeding and serious injuries to internal organs. I personally don't think the explanation is really so simple. :)

While that is interesting for sure, the problem I have seem with many skeptic critiques like this is, as above, they are long on speculation but very short on concrete evidence. There is no real evidence listed in there that backs up the speculations that Mirin Dajo slowly built up scar tunnels through his body as they speculate, but that certainly seems to be a possibility to consider. Thanks for the comments. Whether Mirin Dajo really traveled to India to learn from fakirs or not, I don't know. I did see a book on him on Amazon, but the book is in German. I also saw that there is a long video on him by some guy who was speaking German, so maybe some people have researched Mirin Dajo in detail and have determined what is verifiable fact and what isn't. Something that does seem to be undeniable at this point is that the rapiers and swords were really passing right through his chest and abdomen. No matter how you slice it, it seems what he did is not something a normal person would likely ever be able to do without the high risk of serious consequences. Those rapiers and swords had to passing through various internal organs, and the risk of hitting major arteries and veins must be pretty high as well. :)

Agreed it isnt normal and looks impressive  x 100  !

By the way, I am curious about this

On a similar but different note; back when I worked in a hospital, i escorted a patient from emergency to x-ray. He was working on the mechanism on his garage tilt-a-door when it collapsed on his head, he drove in his car to the hospital, he had a 'cut' on his head. he waited, talked, filled out forms, walked with me and talked to me and then died on the x-ray table .

When the film was developed it showed a large cold chisel , with its butt just under the skull surface and flush with it and through his brain with the point down in his brain stem .

Yikes, that is bad. I have heard of people who have had rods and nails driven into their brain and some apparently survive, although I don't know if any or all made a full recovery from the brain damage. Just from what I recall reading about but I don't have any handy links. The avatar image was just made by drawing several triangles on a circle at regular intervals and then I colored in the sections manually with a paint program. :)

Here's another oddity regarding people with apparent special invinciibilities. In this case it was a reported invincibility to many gun shots:

The English translation summary of the Indonesian TV news story is that a man who was apparently named or nicknamed 'Tarzan' in Gorontalo Province in Indonesia owed a lender some money. The report apparently explains that the man he owed money to showed up at his house with a police officer, but Tarzan killed the police officer with a machete. The police then arrived in force a while later to arrest Tarzan for killing the police officer, but Tarzan stood in the open entrance of his house holding a machete and dared the police to come get him or shoot him. The police apparently shot at his feet and legs to try to disable Tarzan, but it apparently had no effect, so they then started shooting at his body as the man continued to stand in the open entranceway of his house with no apparent harm from the bullets the police were shooting at him. It is stated that the police shot a total of about 107 bullets at Tarzan as he stood in his house entrance. A neighbor apparently eventually informed the police that Tarzan was wearing a special protective amulet ring on his hand that protected him from the gun shots, so it was reported that the police used a sniper to shoot the ring and break it, and once they did that the police killed Tarzan. The following news report video is graphic, as it shows Tarzan being carried out and away after he was reportedly finally killed by the police. There is a long tradition in places like Indonesia and S.E. Asia in general of creating various types of protective amulets like this. Believe it or not, that is apparently the summary of the story of Tarzan and his protective amulet ring and his showdown with the police as  described and shown in the following news report video:

Pemulwuy apparently did the same

15v3pmj_1u7h_l.jpg

he thought he was immune to bullets, he would just stand there out the front of Parramatta stockade yelling and being ferocious. A visiting english officer took a shot and got him, they put him in cell for transportation to Sydney the next day. A doctor examined him and said his chest and some ribs were shot away, he could see the lung, even if he survived the night, the trip to Sydney would kill him. The next morning the cell was empty.

A few months later he was outside the stockade again, brandishing his spear and yelling at the soldiers, he had massive scar tissue across his chest,

Later they shot him again and cut off his head and took it to England.

removing the head and placing it across water from the body ... that will kill a kadiatcha !     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurdaitcha

I'm reminded of Jack Schwarz.   A pioneer in holistic health and biofeedback.  He'd give demonstrations where he'd put a long sail maker needles through his bicep.   With no pain and little or no bleeding.  That's a much easier 'trick' then Dajo's, but in the same genre.

Excellent mind/body control.  Apparently he could perform many yogic tricks.   Dajo might be an extreme example of such mind/body control.   While it was just a long needle through a non lethal part, Schwarz lived to be 76 and seemed to lead a good healthy life.  To me, that counts for way more then what is essentially a party trick.

I think we can learn some of it, do things to a lesser degree, but those with great desire and a certain natural talent will always put us to shame.
