Neoadvaita has its flaws

Indeed, Sri Atmananda Krishna Menon himself stated of the Direct Path teachings that: -

There is nothing "direct" about Direct Path. Its below even Candrakirit's Madhyamakavatara, which is just a sutra level teaching.

OK sooo, I split this thread. Please find the insult each other, swear a lot while putting down teachers and paths, or just plain talk about random other stuff thread here: http://thetaobums.co...-topic-derails/

Unfortunately, this sort of excision leaves the thread completely unintelligible.

Therefore immediately following this excision I deleted all my posts preceding the quote above in this public area, while leaving the posts that were removed intact and after some reflection, I've now decided to replace all my blank posts here with this covering note.

If you're reading this as a guest and you want to read the posts that were excised, you will need to join the Taobums forum and login in order to to follow the link and read them, so that you can make up your own mind about to whom the criteria of "swear(ing) a lot while putting down teachers and paths, or just plain talk about random other stuff" apply.

I also started this thread here in an attempt to deal with this problem of "splitting and pitting" (as it is refered to here) : -

://thetaobums.com/topic/32826-pittingsplitting/

Finally, there quite a detailed discussion about Neoadvaita by James Swartz here, which probably covers all the major points: -

A bit more of an academic than you are perhaps? :)

I have a similar education as a medical doctor, from gross anatomy, to pharmacology to whatever.

So no.

Your deeply flawed flawed logic in the implication that all academics in South Asian Studies are more reliable sources of advaita teaching than Professor VK is equally obvious.

How is it flawed?

By your logic, all educated Indians including me, are reliable sources.

So you should be listening to me.

I've provided a recognised academic source for the definition of "neoadvaita"

Dennis Waite is not an academic source.

Period.

End of Discussion.

Back to the thread subject...

NeoAdvaita does not have direct introduction, and is an inferior version of Chandrakirti's Madhyamakavatara.

What flaws? There are no flaws. Only degrees of awakening. This is in accordance with the teachings of the Great Perfection.

How is it inferior? it is as direct a method into the nature of identity as you can possibly get. You are confused if you think it is some sort of intellectual game or analysis.

There are no degrees. You either recognize unfabricated presence versus the conceptualizing mind......or you don't.

it is as direct a method into the nature of identity as you can possibly get.

There is nothing "direct" about NeoAdvaita. There is no direct introduction.

And why is it inferior to Candrakirti's Madhyamakavatara?

Madhyamakavatara walks the reader through the analysis of "I" step-by-step.

Although self-inquiry actually doesn't form part of neoadvaita, which is "teaching which does not recognize the existence of teacher, seeker, path, etc and which attempts to communicate the nature of reality directly".

Again, Dennis Waite is not a "a recognised [sic] academic source".....as you falsely claim.

And none of this has to do with any of the main points of the thread.

You just want to relabel your favorite NeoAdvaitins as "Direct Path".

Because it still assumes an identity.

Because it still assumes an identity.

How do you bring the non dual into the realm of mind and ideas so you can talk about it using the dualistic mind? Really it is impossible but the way it is attempted is to either negate what it is not, the other way is to affirm to talk about the one, but in practical terms you can't ever find the one, but that is the way they talk about it for convention. The Buddha sometimes said there is no self, Ramana sometimes said there is only the one, really they are two sides of the same coin talking about the same thing.

I don't know a thing about NeoAdvaita but I have studied Chandrakirti and Nagarjuna. Both dry logicians and pedantic scholars who spilled a ludicrous amount of ink trying to define emptiness around their pet edifice of the 'two truths'.

Now, if NeoAdvaita is worse than that...

On the other hand, Ramana Maharshi is a much misunderstood fellow and should not be judged on the basis of those new teachers who claim to represent his teachings. I've compared what he wrote to some contemporary commentaries and I found that they have very little in common.

His writings are excellent btw.

Ramana's writings are the worst. I would put Eckhart Tolle above Ramana.....not that I'm endorsing Eckhart Tolle.

I wouldn't! lol
