I wondered that for a long time.

Never figured it out.

I am sure those aim at mosquitos are not useful.  But somehow they are being sold everywhere.  So may be some mosquitos and dogs can be repelled but others not.

I have a new training partner ... who is actually intelligent and knows what is going on ! What a relief and delightful change !  He is a fit muscled 30+  local indigenous man that has been away a long time and has returned to his country  ( ie. this local area ) .  He has done some kick boxing, boxing ( yes ! finally, someone that knows how to punch properly ! )  and ninjutsu , so he has experience in a bit of weaponry ,  but he wants to learn some others , including sword .   He picks things up quick , and knows a lot, which is good as I dont do beginners ( it starts roughly at black belt level )  or children .

He is also related to my teacher ... indigenous teacher that is , my martial arts teacher died some time back )   ...  of course .   I say 'of course' because just about every indigenous person I have met on the east coast , under some unusual , coincidental or 'magical'  conditions  - or even  picking up a hitch hiker  ,  when I mention his name they ' Thats one of my relatives ! '  :D

We both have an interest in indigenous weaponry and hope to  make some and experiment with it in the future .

Eg  Various names in different languages  but also called the  '' Capital L ''   ;

Aboriginal Weapons

Ancient Indigenous weapons from Australia can deliver 'devastating blows,' 1st-ever biomechanics study of its kind reveals | Live Science

A good general weapon ;  blocking , hooking limbs and weapons , striking (with the back of the head , not the point ) parrying and defecting  and you can throw it .  You need to find the right tree and cut the piece out where the base of the trunk turns into a main horizontal root , to get the grain of the wood following the shape of the ' L ' .

He turned up with his  Mum ( who is a local indigenous elder  ) for the festival that is going on here at the moment .   So we slipped a session in .  But being a  'hippy peace festival'  I decided to slip off somewhere private , so we went into a clearing in the bamboo grove ,

Wow, flashbacks . I havent trained in that bamboo grove for years !  he is keen to do some sword so we did that .  Sword in bamboo grove is very interesting, once you are out of any cleared space into the thicker parts , you can only do vertical cuts and thrusts   between the bamboo.  and to avoid a cut the other  can move away from the 'gap'  between bamboo culms,   very 'tactical' game .

It also gave me a chance to demonstrate one of teachers  points about footwork ;   he had a very distinctive style of a sort of deliberate lift up put down of the feet .  No sliding feet around , making arcs , etc . Why ?  because in the real world  the ground is  nothing like  a dojo or gym floor ... or even a grass lawn .  ..... I caught my foot on a bamboo stump  and  'faltered '  ....  slash ! .... me 'dead' .

I said the same thing, more gymnastics than martial arts.

But still a high level of accomplishment.

Maybe you can appreciate this one a little more

What country are most of the "high level" martial artists/fighters at? I want to know so I can learn their language and go there eventually. By high level I mean like Grandmaster Wolf,

My teacher  never fought competition , never ran a school for money , never had big classes . When his very famous teacher passed on. several claimed to be the new leader and master , he never did . The one that did and still is, I think , cannot show any authority  from that master that says he is now the head .  However my teacher inherited the masters sword and weaponry . Also my teacher looked after him for years at the end when he was infirm .

No would know who this man is , he was a quiet and humble person .  teaching individuals and small groups, yet many high level instructors and other masters  came to see and learn from him.

When teacher died a few from here went to Okinawa for his funeral  , they said  there were a large amount of people from OS attending .  His neighbours wondered why all the people from different countries , they were told  that was because he was a  very accomplished and world famous ( with those 'in the know' ) martial artist . The neighbours were surprised, they never knew that about him .

I respect that.

I also respect the lineages which accept open challenges from anyone.

But why fight at all.

If anyone wants to prove they're tougher or better than me.

I could invite them to work harder than I'm working and produce more than I'm producing.

That seems like a good win/win format to settle disputes.
