@Taoist Texts Almost all DDJ translations use the Wang Bi characters (e.g. ctext.org, James Legge), and Wang B was a Confucian. Do you think the Guodian was also written by a Confucian?

great question.

Quote

the Chu slips are dated to around 300 BC.

Kong Fuzi (Chinese: ), more usually Kongzi (孔子; lit.'Master Kǒng', c. 551 – c. 479 BCE),

150 years is not enough time for the Confucianism to spread all over china so whoever copied this text was not a Confucian in a sense of a formal offical scholar.

However, Guodian was composed by "Lao-zi" whose student Confucius himself was. So in that sense yes Guodian is a Confucian text because Confucianism is "Laoism".

Or conversely Lao-zi was the first Confucian before Confucius .

You get my drift?

“It is more accurate to view Confucian ethics as a kind of virtue ethics, rather than as a kind of care ethics.“

It seems there was a big misunderstanding between Laotze's 道與德(principle of Tao and virtue of Tao) and Confucius's 道德(virtue of morality).

The DDJ is, like Confucianism, a virtue ethics.

I like to translate 道德 as ‘a book about the way of morality’. :)
