Empowerments in taoism?

Recommended Posts

I have practiced tantric buddhism for many years where teachers give empowerments to their students. Are there tantric empowerments in taoism? What kind of practices are taught through empowerments in taoism? Thank you

Transmission is HUGE in Daoism.  I've heard from several sources that it's hard if not impossible to cross stages of energetic development without transmission.

The stuff I know about includes activation of energy centers i.e. LDT, but also that you can be actively 'helped' through various stages of energetic development - even very late into the process.

Aside from this is the passive field effect you get from being in the room with other practitioners i.e. if you're training LDT activation with a bunch of people who have it you're more likely to succeed.

It goes way deeper though and I hope the folks who know about that pop in to tell you :)

Hello Wilhelm and thank you for reply. What is LDT?

I have seen and studied with a number of teachers and instructors from taoist systems. I remember some of them speaking how they received transmissions from their masters. Thinking about this and comparing with tantric buddhist empowerments it seems like we might or might not be talking about the same thing. The feel of the energy just doesn't feel the same. Eould be great to have a specialist pitch in.

Ah I'm sorry about that.  It means Lower Dan Tien, which is a field in the lower abdomen that in practical terms becomes the primary energy center were developing in a lot of Daoist systems for a long time.

Well I'm definitely not qualified to determine whether they're the same thing!

The guys I know who know the most about this are @freeform and @Shadow_self , though I'm not sure if their Buddhist systems use the term 'empowerments'.   I'm sure if they have something they want to say on the topic they'll pop in at some point :)

Yeah there are empowerments, mind seals, transmissions, qi emissions, heart to heart and mind to mind transmissions… direct qi repatterining… lineage transmission and more 😬

They're all slightly different.

Everyone uses different terms - which makes it complicated 😅

People sometimes use the term ‘transmission’ as a term of learning (sharing of key information) - sometimes they mean energetic transmission.

It goes both ways.

Empowerments/Transmissions can be used to help practice in a variety of ways.

To me, the true bread and butter of the lineages is when practice automatically leads to transmission.

In my opinion, you can reach master level without direct transmissions or empowerments.

If you can align yourself fully with the lineage compass, method and ethical precepts/guidance alone will take you to master level. Transmission will occur automatically.
