The lanterns can symbolize the people letting go of their past selves and getting new ones, which they will let go of the next year. The lanterns are almost always red to symbolize good fortune.

Thank you, Limahong!  That's beautiful.

 

Believe it or not, they taught us how to make Chinese lanterns in kindergarten, and I still half remembered when I decided to make one recently (though I did go to youtube to refresh the instructions I got at the age of 5! :D )
