Thorium reactors aren't a particularly new idea. At one point in early 50's it seems like it could have gone either way. Unfortunately uranium got the nod because it could byproduct nuclear weapons!?
I believe a few experimental ones have been built and hope they become common in the future. Again the engineering may have some problems. Hopefully we'll be smart enough to throw some big funding bucks at it.
Doesnt India have some working thorium reactors?
Yup, uranium got the nod because of the weaponization.
