PS...

May we say that the gods are before the elephants. The gods should be above the elephants...???

Well.. you've convinced me. It's definitely about elephants.

Dusty.....

I thought you are better than that. Please don't make me to retract my statement complimenting about your Chinese. I can come up with all kinds of excuses to pardon all others but you. I had high hopes for you. Now, I have second thoughts. ;)

But he wasn't a god or an elephant.

Edit to add:

Actually, back when I was in elementary school they were still teaching the three races of man and Peking man was one of them.

真人至妙,若有若無。髣髴太淵,乍沈乍浮。

This is from Cantong qi.

淵兮似萬物之宗...

湛兮似或存。吾不知誰之子,象帝之先。

This is from TTC ch 4

The same thing, something or "someone" is sinking and showing.

That is the way the immortal appear.

I am glad that Lao zi don't know where this one come from.

When I saw it first time, I don't know, too.

And I still don't know now.
