Is this probably a scam?

Recommended Posts

Found something that, on the surface, seems it would be pretty cool to have. But, I am a skeptic, and would love to hear the opinions from others about this.

since you have so little money, you are probably better off buying a detailed how to book instead of this collectors item. I'm refrencing your previous thread where you made 40$ and want to buy a good instructional (what happened with that?).

The missus saw this and thought she may get it for me as a gift. It just doesn't sit right for some reason.

it looks to me like a wooden version of the tao de jing text and in chinese only. you can find translated dao de jing with commentary on the internet. sorry but frankly I think that it is frivulous spending. I'm sure there are better gifts out there, such as the new kunlun book, or many other useful books (recommendations available). I bought some health bars as a gift for a friend from here

but if you are both comfortable with it, then this wooden scroll can be a good hanged decoration.

:)

i have to agree with Desert Eagle that it's frivolous spending. what does it being a scam or you being a skeptic have to do with buying something that is for decoration? the seller isn't promising that the 'scroll' will bring you to enlightenment or anything. it's just something that looks pretty that you can put on your wall or your altar or something, which definitely seems like a waste of money to me.

On the flip side, this is a relatively inexpensive gift and if it inspires your practice - then by all means, grace your practice space with it :)

one last thing that should be pointed out if you DO decide you want this thing:

the seller doesn't say anything at all about the size, which means the entire box could be small enough to fit in your hand.

make sure you contact the seller and ask them what the dimensions are.

These are sold in plenty of tourist markets. This particular one, since it's not complete, could be bought over here for about $6 if you're a good bargainer. A complete one with all 81 verses would be worth more than $20 in the markets and more in bookstores. This one appears to go up to 15 verses, maybe the pic got cut off, but looking at the size of the thing certainly not more than ~20.

Not a scam but also nothing special.
