What is money?

What is money literally? 
Here is a generic definition

 

"Money is anything that people use to pay for goods and services and to pay people for their work. Historically, money has taken different forms in different cultures—everything from salt, stones, and beads to gold, silver, and copper coins."

Obviously money is not a permanent store of value.  Countries regularly issue new currencies.  The US is the major exception with notes from 1900 still legal currency - hence most of the US notes are held privately in other countries as protection against the loss of value of local currency.

 

By some accounts, if you cannot pay government tax with the currency it is not money.

 

Some alien accounts, give a long list of the evidence for Earth humans not being civilized, including the use of money.

 

It may be noted that intergalactic trade does not use money.
