I know your feeling. I started working out with weights in my mid thirties thanks to a Special Forces friend of mine at the time.
I still work out. Not constantly though. When I am feeling a little whimpy I will start a session and work up to where I want my strength and endurance and then stop until I am feeling whimpy again.
And yes, when I start I always start with the ten pound dumbbells and work up from there gradually. I am actually in a session now at about my half way mark.
And you are so right. The iron never lies to you.
