Wouldn't 無實無虛 just mean dharma is "without reality and without emptiness (unreality)," making 虛 rather than 無 stand for non-being?

Exactly. That's the tricky thing about the language in general and about the 無 in particular. Some times it means 'no' sometimes 'non-being'. How you know which is which? You gotta understand the subject.

Also, just to be clear on my own position, 所 is less a pronoun here than it is a modifier which makes 得 into a noun.

    cool:)

  2. I agree that  所 does stand for a noun, being a pronoun, i.e  the grammatical role of 所 is

"1)  What, that which, all that, whatever (nearest thing to a Chin. relative pronoun, introducing a noun clause): "

    http://humanum.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/Lexis/Lindict/

but there is no 'no' here. what ppl mistake for a 'no'  is in fact the Buddhist term for 'non-being' and what they mistake for 'actually' is in fact the Buddhist term for 'being' 實.

  3.  your comment on the Spanish Civil war did not seem to indicate that you had read up on it.  It is enormously complex and people fought on both sides for a variety of reasons.  Rather like the American Civil war to reduce it to a single issue is a mistake.

No it is not. The single issue is: in a historical perspective was Spain better off under Franco or under the communists?

For one thing the Spanish Republic was democratically elected through the popular vote - while Franco and his associates staged a military coup.

It could have been democratically elected but shortly after turned into a communist cabal. Franco did his duty.

  4. A question: shall this inform the voting given the EU immigration and refugee policies?

Mateen's father Mir Seddique told NBC News that the sight of two men kissing angered his son.

“We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident,” the father added. “We weren’t aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country.”

The attack, he said, “has nothing to do with religion.” However, Pete Williams of NBC News reported that Mateen called 911 and swore his allegiance to al-Baghdadi of ISIS before the shooting massacre.

  5. Obviously you have not studied the Spanish Civil war in any depth.

Obviously anybody who disagrees with the liberal propaganda must be an ignorant hick to you. But that's ok you are welcome to rationalize.;)

    however this made me curious...

560 pages is short for you?

For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. Wikipedia

  7.

What Inhave discovered to my disgust, is that it appears that universities and schools are pushing to remain. A friend of mine is a school teacher and told me how he had 'convinced the kids to vote remain'. I think we seriously need to look at institutional propaganda foisted on vulnerable children in public education and in universities which are pseudo private, but who's employees have a vested interest in persuading those they teach to remain.

a fish rots from the head down. All of the intelligentsia depends on govt handouts eventually.

  8. It is rather difficult to see how this is related to the EU.

That's the main point of a conspiracy. Its is difficult to see the big pic until it is too late. Anyway congrats on that.

    And on this

    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/super-rich-swiss-village-opts-for-200000-fine-instead-of-accepting-10-refugees-a7053826.html

As for the UK I would be surprised if it would not fold like a lawn chair and stay. It is probably to late to for it to save itself.

  9.

    Wot?

Roman politicians passed laws in 140 B.C. to keep the votes of poorer citizens, by introducing a grain dole: giving out cheap food and entertainment, "bread and circuses", became the most effective way to rise to power.

… Already long ago, from when we sold our vote to no man, the People have abdicated our duties; for the People who once upon a time handed out military command, high civil office, legions — everything, now restrains itself and anxiously hopes for just two things:
    bread and circuses

    [...]
iam pridem, ex quo suffragia nulli / uendimus, effudit curas; nam qui dabat olim / imperium, fasces, legiones, omnia, nunc se / continet atque duas tantum res anxius optat, /

    panem et circenses
    . [...]

  10. I'd add a spin off of this quote by saying - only in no grasping (which can be a form of fear) to life or death lies true liberation

that would be "Abiding in no forms at all, one falls into the abyss of void."

    so...no.

  11. 仲尼曰:“…是必才全而德不形者也。”

Confucius said:..his soul is so whole that his De does not come to the surface of his body.

    哀公曰:“何谓才全?”

Duke asked: what do you mean his soul is so whole?

Confucius said: …the circumstances change, that’s fate; you can not know where it started. But for a person whose talent is whole, the external things are not sufficient to disturb the harmony (of his nature), and are not allowed to enter into his soul. So he is ever joyful and does not lose his senses, there are no cracks in him and the things are forever as if in spring season, he comes in contact with things and reacts timely with his heart. Therefore his soul stays whole.

    “何谓德不形?”

Duke asked: what do you mean his De does not come up to the surface of his body?

    曰:“平者,水停之盛也。其可以为法也,内保之而外不荡也。德者,成和之修也。德不形者,物不能离也。”

Confucius said: a calm surface of the deep water is a metaphor for this, its potential is within and there are no waves outside. Similarly, when somebody’s De is perfect, it does not come up to the surface of his body, and the external things can not disturb it.

Basically the gist of this conversation is that normally a De of a person shows in his appearance making him beautiful externally, but also running a danger to be captured and led astray by the external things, because it is out in the open.

Now, in exceptional cases, a De is so integral, that it stays firmly within, not making his owner beautiful, but also being safely hid under his ugly appearance, keeping his soul whole , not being led astray by the external things.

  12. Anyway, you haven't commented on the focus of my ramblings... am I to assume that you don't entirely disagree with my idea about  德不形者 ?

    I entirely agree

So.. I'm interested in the phrase 德不形者.

    So, why not translate as:

One with integrity has cultivated complete harmony; One with inward integrity is indispensable to / loved by all.

...essentially saying that one with integrity is great, but one with non-evident integrity is even better...?

Yes, to me it is correct, but there is a twist to it...i will post on it in a few

  13. There is no "though" or "but" or "however" in the Chinese. I see it as:

               成和之修       德不形           物不能離

concept one          description            concept two                description

Actually this 物不能離  (things do not break away) is a ZZ-unique variant of a set phrase that exists in several variants

    物不能惑

    物不能拘

    物不能乱

meaning that if someone has de, or peaceful mind, or internal refinement, then the things can not bother, hinder, or confuse him

this particular variant    物不能離 means that the things can not lead him (or his De) astray

  14. Thank you very much.

    no sweat

I cannot read chinese yet. I have just started my classes. Is there any translated version of this picture ?

    I think so

About the citation in the HuangDi Neijing - i do have a translated version here with me. Do you know the page or at least the chapter it is mentioned on ?

Interestingly, it is the chapter 73 in Suwen which is missing from Unshuld

    as you can see here

    https://muse.jhu.edu/book/26200

    he skips 72 and 73

    the sentence is ...神失守位,即神游上丹田,...

...the spirit loses its place, and travels to the upper dantian..

    本病論

however these 2 chapters are considered apocryphal as discussed here

  15. My question is :

Do anyone know if there's any direct relation between the SanJiao, Seas of Qi, Heart Meridian, Yintang point and Seas of Marrow with the dantian?

    Direct - no.

Is it a concept derivated from any form of knowledge from TCM's physiology ?

The concept of DT - yes.

But, if these concepts aren't related, then, what is the origin of the knowledge on dantian? Where does it comes from?

It is first mentioned in a confucian text

蔡中郎集 - Cai Zhong Lang Ji[Eastern Han] 152-192

and in 2 foundational medical texts - one occurence in each)

    黄帝内经 - Huangdi Neijing[Warring States - Western Han (475 BC - 9)]

    伤寒论 - Shang Han Lun[Eastern Han (25 - 220)]

Is there any more knowledge about it?

For instance, about related structures which may lay dormant in the body and how they interact with the other energetic structures we have ?

Sure lots and lots of it. E g. like on this pic

    coloured-neijing-tu1.jpg

Thank you all for your attention. Please enlighten me.

  16. Well, it may be a bit lofty, but honestly my ultimate goal is to see the path to the end, to become a 真人 and/or 天仙 and attain the Dao.

    Excellent

I suppose more short term goals on the path would be to attain self-mastery and a completely virtuous life.

Yes. And even closer goals would be to escape two traps: one is the neidan trap and second is the usual tourist traps. Actually thats one and the same trap, hehe)

I read Zhang Boduan giving an instruction of visualizing a golden ball of energy at the lower dantian while sitting in meditation. Is this what your student was taught or something similar?

    Similar

How about the material in Wang Liping's Ling Bao Tong Zhi Neng Nei Gong Shu? Is this a legit source and worth working from?

Heck if i know. Have not seen it. If it is anything like this

then it is, if not - then not.
