As to the transl. of this para, only Zyporin got it right. Properly, the dialog goes like this

unfortunately not. like i said, in translation industry the groupthink reigns. Mair wanted to provide something new but it turned out same old. In general, while the recognized translators get the most of ZZ's text right like 75%, they certainly do not understand the overall meaning, and they certainly get 1/4 of the text wrong. The piece you posted contains  some more translating mistakes. i can correct those if there is interest.

The translation is consistent with other translations I have read.

is actually a continuation of the cicada's and dovlet's speech and should be included in the quotation marks. Then instead of a non-sequitur it will become a coherent argument by the cicada explaining why shorter trips are preferable to long ones. You dont need food supply on shorter trips, thats why.

Another gap in logic is between these para:

1.Supposing there were someone who could ride upon the truth of heaven and earth, who could chariot upon the  transformations of the six vital breaths and thereby go wandering in infinity, what would he have to rely on?

2.Therefore, it is said that the ultimate man has no self, the spiritual person has no accomplishment, and the sage has no name.

 

Whats the reasoning between 1 and 2?

It's pathetic partly, I think, because people who live only for one hundred and twenty years shouldn't expect to be able to match the knowledge or experience of someone who lived almost eight hundred years. Progenitor P'eng was an adept in self cultivation. There is a belief that he never died because he was seen seventy years after his disappearance. He supposedly had forty-nine wives and fifty-four sons.

 

Thats a totally reasonable explanation based on these 3 translations. Except the three tenors  translators, got the meaning wrong. I looked at the original closely and here ZZ says that Peng-zu who lived mere 800 years is pathetic compared to the turtle and the tree, who live thousands of years.

Nowadays Progenitor P'eng is famous for his more than seven hundred years of longevity. Isn't it pathetic that people try to emulate him?

Hehe, There was this master of Single Yang or whatever, who had a sarcastic retort to those who claimed having the EB:

"You say you obtained embryonic breathing? Where is your embryo then?"

Now, my breath has as far not stopped when this pulsing happened, but something quite extraordinary, not normal at all, started to happen during training none the less. So, the 100s of sources who claim this and that regarding EB, don't really hold up to this one person, who told me how EB starts.

Absolutely, no argument there. Btw, thats one of the reasons for secrecy. If i told here my personal experience here it would be just another story adding to confusion, nothing more.

All the misconceptions and guesswork about EB stem from a phrase in Bao-pu-zi 

《抱朴子·释滞》：“得胎息者，能不以口鼻嘘吸，如在胞胎之中。”

"Whoever obtained EB, can do without inhaling through nose and mouth, similar to an embryo in the womb".

Note, that same as the OP text, he does say what it is not, but does not say what it is exactly.  So people are reduced to guesswork, thinking that it is the breath stoppage or some kind of DT contractions, or leading qi, or stopping thoughts, or whatever. Which it is not . A pointer to what it is (p 1056).

Stopping of breath is unusual and feels good, also the text describe the beginning of the eb as 'the regular breathing stops', so when people experience stopping,  it they go - aha! this must be the eb!

But it is not. Stopping is a sign of a good progress but still far from the eb.

About breathing without breathing, AKA embryonic breathing - there are two schools of thought...

 

The first states that you literally are not breathing...you don't have to, because your body has perfect respiration without the mechanism of inhale and exhale.

 

The second states that you're breathing, but the mechanics are so refined or the mind is elsewhere, so that it seems like you're not.

 

The first group would say that the second group has simply never actually achieved embryonic breathing.

Both groups do not know what they talk about, because they both say that EB is absence of breathing, either actual or seemingly. In truth, the EB is your normal breathing on the outside, its just done differently on the inside.

but there is no 'no' here. what ppl mistake for a 'no' 無 is in fact the Buddhist term for 'non-being' and what they mistake for 'actually' is in fact the Buddhist term for 'being' 實.

 your comment on the Spanish Civil war did not seem to indicate that you had read up on it.  It is enormously complex and people fought on both sides for a variety of reasons.  Rather like the American Civil war to reduce it to a single issue is a mistake.  

No it is not. The single issue is: in a historical perspective was Spain better off under Franco or under the communists?

For one thing the Spanish Republic was democratically elected through the popular vote - while Franco and his associates staged a military coup. 

It could have been democratically elected but shortly after turned into a communist cabal. Franco did his duty.
