[HHC Study] Hua Hu Ching Chapter 19

Recommended Posts

To the ordinary person, the body of humanity seems vast. In truth, it is neither bigger nor smaller than anything else. To the ordinary person, there are others whose awareness needs raising. In truth, there is no self, and no other. To the ordinary person, the temple is sacred and the field is not. This, too, is a dualism which runs counter to the truth. Those who are highly evolved maintain an undiscriminating perception. Seeing everything, labeling nothing, they maintain their awareness of the Great Oneness. Thus they are supported by it.

"Kind prince," asked the master, "how do we recognise the size of the body which humankind possesses?"

The prince replied, "Venerable Teacher, according to the Universal Way, the big body possessed by humankind is not big, but is merely called so. It is not bigger or smaller than any other kind of life."

"Kind prince, this understanding is the foundation of correct awareness. If a person says that he should help all people by sharing his correct awareness with them., he shows that he does not truly have correct awareness. Why is this? An integral universal being has no perception of self and others, life and death, longevity and brevity. If there is no self, there are no others to help through sharing one's awareness.

"Kind prince, if one of correct awareness states that the temple is holy and sublime, he does not truly have correct awareness because a universal being labels nothing. People may labels a temple as holy and sublime by creating the dualistic concepts of places which are holy and sublime in contrast to places which are not. Only when one has dissolved all discriminations, however, can he be recognised as having attained correct awareness of integralness. Kind prince, ignore all appearances of duality and embrace only the integral, one universal life."
