  1. Everyone post some favorite quotes!

"Place your clothes and weapons where you can find them in the dark." Robert A. Heinlein
  2. Favorite Homegrown Taoist Quotes

If it looks like a duck and acts like a duck It's not a duck.
  3. Spaced out

Then breathe. Just breathe. Be aware that you have stopped. Be aware that you are breathing. Then forgive yourself. Allow yourself to feel love, to feel gratitude for all the sources of joy around you. Soon the anxiety will pass and you will be free to move forward again.
  4. Mostly Mindful Middle School Librarian

The school is lucky to have you. I wish you love, compassion, courage and strength as you quietly heal the world around you.
  5. Is my metaphor correct?

To lighten can mean removal of a burden. It can also mean illumination. To be enlightened implies to carry no burden as well as to walk a well light path. In a spinning disk, centrifugal force is strongest on the edge an weakest in the center. From the the center of a disk, all is the same. From the edge there is disk and no disk. It seems like a good analogy to me.
  6. Hello, Everyone!

Hello, Everyone! I stumbled upon The Dao Bums a few weeks ago and have been lurking ever since. It’s nice to find an active forum where people are discussing Taoism, Buddhism, and other related topics. About me: I’m just a guy living his life. Once upon a time I considered myself a Taoist and perhaps I still am. It’s difficult to say. I practice mindfulness whenever I can. That’s a lot harder than it sounds. The mind wants to wander, forward, backward, sideways - anywhere but here and now. It’s like herding cats. There’s a lot of good information on this forum. I look forward to getting to know everyone here, and giving you the opportunity to know me. -Lost in Translation
  7. this is simple, obvious, and easy to understand

Try to explain colors to a man blind from birth... In my experience the most profound truths are revealed in silence. 'Exactly' isn't necessary.
  8. Beautiful

Exerpt from Ulysses, by Alfred Lord Tennyson https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45392/ulysses My favorite poem.
  9. What are the fruits of your practice?

Patience. Acceptance. Allowing myself to diminish. Being here. Being now. Doing this. Just this. Listening. I used to live in the past, or future. I felt regrets over what was and axiexty over what was not. That's a crappy way to live so I choose a different path. I falter. I pick myself up. I forgive. I meditate in silence. I pray. It is getting better.
  10. Hello, Everyone!

Please make sure to let us know how it goes. We want Heinleinesque details! Was there toast? Butter on both sides? How many types of jam, or were there jellies? What's the difference between jam and jelly anyway? We need to know!
  11. Sitting meditation not comfortable

This is such a good thread! I think I'll resurrect it! Unless you are a skinny string-bean, extended cross legged sitting is not easy. As others have stated, those of us from western countries never learned to sit on the floor growing up so it's somewhat unnatural. I have a sturdy cushion (actually a yoga bolster). It helps a lot - keeps my butt higher than my feet which does wonders. I also set a timer on my phone so I'm not tempted to check the clock. When it rings, it rings. Until then, I sit. Regarding the rest, I've learned that there's nothing else I need to do and there's nowhere else I need to be. Keep the priorities straight.
  12. Trouble Focussing While Meditating

So true. For this one brief moment during the day you've got nothing else to do. Let technology track the time so you don't have to.
  13. Yan Xin PDF from the CIA website

CIA does all kinds of stuff. Search 'Remote Viewing' or 'Stargate Project'.
  14. Hello, Everyone!

Fire is beautiful to behold and provides a pleasant warmth, but never forget that to consume is its nature. Mistakes were made. Lessons were learned. Life goes on. Here I am.
