What is money?

Recommended Posts

It is a mechanism to "store" value. A mechanism that is to an extent agreed upon by the society, and what they recognize as valuable.

A way to store the value of your service, or product, and use that across time. As opposed to direct barter trade, where transaction of a service, or merchandise is exchanged on the spot immediately.

So storing value earned in the form of money, and the ability to use it across time, allows more freedom and incentive for people to experience it value in services and creating products in their own time, and as much as they want.

You can think of it also in terms of energy. Where instead of something like the sun shining onto things and making it hot. Solar panels and batteries store their energy, and use this energy across time. You can see the benefit and flexibility of such a mechanism. Money is like energy if valued stored for later use.

But it is an agreed mechanism by current society. This is why when you are lost in a jungle, money is useless. It has no value in the wild, because a society of animals do not recognize it, have no use for money.

Thank you. The energy analogy was amazing. I would be grateful if you could expand on the last paragraph. Also, does money have a set of chareteristics?

Thank you to whoever is in charge of my algorithm, feeding me this one right now:

if you don’t want to watch, it is summarized in the description. I will not take a stand of weather he is correct or not.

By posting it under your name, you are already taking a stand.

I mean, true, but I am not married to it. Let’s explore

Me, I don't like it when people pretend to ask a question (in the thread title) while actually they have an agenda.

Ideas are external to us. I don’t like it when people are unable to debate ideas in a discussion about an idea.

Posting something under your name, which screams BLOOD FEUDS in huge red letters is not only taking a stand, it is promoting and supporting it.  Expressing gratitude for receiving the video indicates approval and support of it.

Alright. I get your point. I don’t get why you don’t get mine.

Then express clearly in your own words, the view or idea that you hold, so we know what the idea even is, so there can actually be a discussion.

The topic is about money. Or rather, what money is. My opinion is that money is a scam.

Really, this thread isnt about my opinion. I simply like to learn what people think money is, and then we take it from there.

If someone asks a question in a forum, then it is reasonable to expect that the question is also answered by the person posing the question in the opening post.  If they don't, then for me it is a red flag.   So yes, when asking readers for their opinion, it is yes about your own opinion also.  .

Okay, I suggest we stop talking about your interpertation of my intentions. It is lame, and I will not interact with that line of thought any further.

Regarding bold above stated opinion, how does that fit in, or align with, or flow from the framework of your path?   (path of religion and spirituality).

it's a great topic to explore, how our views of money are an expression of our path

I mean… hm… if we take the energy idea discussed earlier, then it is relevant to spirituality in the sense of where you choose to invest your energy: in god or in whatever money is. I think a culture that invest in life in all its forms is superior to one that invest in… whatever money is.

I fully agree. So we should not treat the supply as our own.

On the path i follow, it is an obligation to give tzedakah, in the amount of 10% to 30% of my income.  (There are specific guidelines on where to give, how to give, how much to give, when to give, in what order to give; for most people it is the 10-20%; the 30% is for fewer people.)  This recognizes that our money is not ours, it belongs to God who has entrusted it to us.
