  1. Now THAT is one weird starfish !

Hundreds of dead starfish on the beach this evening. Nothing seems to eat them. The gulls certainly weren't interested.
  2. Is celibacy for 10 years realistic?

Good call. You are 20 FFS. Boff in good health lad and enjoy.
  3. Getting Up at Sunrise

Fabulous sunrises here at the new place. We're on the East Coast. Sunrise here is 7-20ish at the moment.
  4. Atheism as a religion

Very faithful people are atheists. Possibly mentioned this here before. Back in the late 90s I was working in India. Our R&R base was in a seaside village in North Karnataka. A 'World Congress of Atheists' had gathered in Bombay and we got to know about them because after their gig some of them had booked an extra week holiday based in a guest house in 'our' village. A lot of them were German, some Scandinavians, coupla Americans; no Brits that we met. Thing about those atheists was that they all had World Congress of Atheists, T shirts, bags, badges, beanie hats- the works. Each evening they built a bonfire on the beach and sat round singing atheist songs ( in English). Then one of them gave a little atheist sermon followed by more ( dire) singing. There was nothing to choose between what those atheists were doing and an old time Gospel Camp Meeting. Atheism is a form of belief for sure and its faithful followers are truly devout.
  5. Humanities in modern day education?

I took... First degree nursing. Post Graduate Diploma in Forensic Podiatry. Post Graduate Certificate in Education ( Teaching Qualification) Masters in Teacher Education ( Teacher Training) Doctorate (EdD) in ' Gender in Education Management'. In a 47 year working life I was never out of reasonably well-paid work for a single day. I reckon that a vocational degree route that more or less guarantees a job is perhaps wisest given the sheer cost of pursuing Higher Education these days. Unless one is independently wealthy. Humanities is possibly a luxury route that few young people can afford to travel in today's competitive jobs market.
  6. What would you tell your 20 year old self?

Vicar: " If any amongst ye knoweth any just cause or impediment that this couple may not be joined together in Holy Matrimony ye are to speak now or forever hold your peace." GMP ( aged 20): "Yeah I do. byeeee." If only!
  7. Upping Sticks

Utterly cream crackered ( knackered). BT said Broadband due on 16th but it seems to be working now. Kudos to BT for that. Move went smoothly and we've been at it ever since unpacking, cleaning and such. Plenty more to be done, the outgoing folks left it in a right old mess. Time enough and more to do it. Have put in a dog proof fence around the inside of the property. More later.
  8. Upping Sticks

I may be off TTB for a while after this evening. We move tomorrow. There's no broadband yet at the new place and mobile phones don't work in that area. Landline or marine radio only and there's no landline installed as yet. The old fisherman we've bought off said... "I've never needed a telephone. Anybody wants to tell me something they can knock on the door." It's 1957 still around those parts and no bad thing. Will be speaking to BT about getting online somehow. Otherwise expect my owl or pigeon bearing messages.
  9. This struck me having read another thread. Many of the links and clips we see here on TTB have adverts for books and links to 'tickets for sale' seminars and such. Does anyone know of somebody who does NOT have an online shop or merchandise to sell via a Spirituality Themed website, blog or suchlike? This is not to criticise anyone for getting a living from whatever it is they promote online of a spiritual nature. My interest lies in discovering if there is anyone out there 'doing it for free'.
  10. Is self defense egotistical?

Chocolate is one of our essential 'five a day' foods here.
  11. Noticed anything strange lately?

Yesterday I was covered head and shoulders with spider web. Like a mask on my face it was, really thick. Measuring for some fence posts and inadvertently walked through a whole series of webs across a path. That is strong stuff and quite sticky. Worst of it was the fly corpses. Those took some washing off. No bites though thank goodness.
  12. Power corrupts always and everywhere. You are correct. Powerlessness, on the other hand; is not of necessity virtuous. We've all come across, currently powerless; back stabbing ambitious bastards eager to climb the greasy pole to power. Virtue is a conscious choice.
  13. Anything that helps combat swollen prostate in older men is to be welcomed. As you say it is very common. Controlled large scale trials are possibly more reliable to formulate conclusions or recommendations than are small scale observations. It's highly unlikely that GM Chia has any stats related to prostate issue 'outcomes' beyond a very few amongst those that he knows are using his methods.
  14. Upping Sticks

Penultimate van run up to the new house and back today. Lawn mowers and garden tools. That's it now until I follow the removal van up there next Tuesday. Packing case central round here right now.
  15. Freedom, the way out...

Edward Enfield calls retirement ... " The Declining Years." and goes on to say... " because I can now decline to do what I had to do when I was working." In this excellent book...... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Old-Age-Survive-Edward-Enfield/dp/1840247762/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1412286752&sr=1-1&keywords=old+age+and+how+to+survive+it
  16. Is self defense egotistical?

    No Hope that helps.
  17. Noticed anything strange lately?

"Walrus Stampede" There's a line I never thought to read here on TTB.
  18. Change the WIND!

Same doc, different patient. Guy says... " I can't stop farting Doc, please help me." Doc says nothing, walks out of the consulting room and comes back in carrying a long pole with a hook on the end. " please don't shove that up my erse Doc!" Pleads the guy. Doc says... " Calm down, I'm just going to open that skylight window to clear the air in here."
  19. Morality of Physical Practices and the Dao

Just cultivate every day. It kinda 'does itself' after a while. The 'I' disappears. In MA that's when you are good enough that you do the moves without consciously thinking about what to do and when. It just 'comes' naturally to you - faster than you could think what to do. Same sort of thing happens with a non MA cultivation. The trick is to just do it, every day.
  20. What the hell is all this complex stuff?

You got that right. Bills stay the same but there's no salary with which to pay 'em. Economy is our new watchword chez nous!
  21. celibacy for 8 months...

    Married with kids I bet.
  22. Russell Brand

He started out hosting one of the talent show review programmes and was pretty good on that. He seemed to have a genuine interest in the people on the show and also had some nice repartee with the audience. Since then though, to me; he seems to have become a bit 'full of himself' does young Brand. I've gone right off him but maybe his new style suits a different audience to old farties like me.
  23. Love....Dating.....Marriage....Why?

I'd watch out for anyone on a regular dating site who majors on 'spiritual' in their CV. If that's such a major issue for compatibility then they'd be better off on one of the spiritual themed dating sites. If you bring up spiritual themes with someone who hasn't mentioned those first then it's quite likely that the person will think... "No thank you." Politics and Religion are topics best avoided during introductory exchanges.
  24. Noticed anything strange lately?

Bit of an Indian summer here. Still shirt sleeve weather in the day time. Cracking second show of roses. Almost as many as the first flush. Gardens look a treat round here. The weather's due to change to something more season-appropriate here by this weekend, according to the Met Office. Been a good year for spiders. The big ones are females. If you don't like them in the house put a horse chestnut ( conkers) on each indoors windowsill. Conkers are on the trees right now. Spiders will move out.
