  1. To The Naysayers...

    I like my branch.
  2. Conceptual Virtue question, Teaching vs Healing

Teachers sometimes heal and healers sometimes teach. Both are virtuous paths when followed honourably and humbly.
  3. Sorry to hear that you broke up with your partner 4bsolute.
  4. Caffeine pills?

That's all I ever took drugs wise but some of the cabbies were drugged up to the eyeballs on uppers. You had to work long hours to make serious money. I only drove on evenings and weekends. Our taxi base was on Streatham Hill in London just up the road from Brixton and friends said I was mad to be driving a cab round Brixton at night.
  5. Is faith an illusion of the mind?

I read somewhere that.. "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." There's ambiguity for you. If we take 'substance' and 'evidence of' that implies factual non illusory. Whereas taking those other factors... 'Things hoped for' and 'things not seen' That implies ( to me) the illusory- intangible. Not sure that answers your OP question though.
  6. Caffeine pills?

Moonlighting as a minicab ( unlicensed) taxi driver when I was in college I used - over the counter bought -caffeine pills for a short time. After about five nights of taking the recommended dosage of those I got the shits and the shakes and had difficulty sleeping at all. Threw the pills away and was OK again after a couple of days. For years now we've been on decaff tea and coffee for no other reason than Mrs GMP prefers those. Odd times I have caffeinated tea or coffee if we're out then I get a slight 'buzz' from it.
  7. little tiny flying things

A doc once told me that 'floaters' were clumps of white blood cells in the eye that we can sometimes see as shadowy forms. Perfectly natural apparently. I get them in summer now and again but hardly ever in winter.
  8. The polarizing fronts of egotism vs. altruism

Ouch! You were treated badly indeed. Altruistic people experience many 'knock backs', it goes with the territory. Some people take advantage of altruism and others mistake kindness for weakness and try to exploit it. Whisper it softly but IMO we're all of us a little bit egotistical now and again. Try as we might that old ego does pop out now and again. Altruism beats egotism every time though.

  13. Could the Matrix movies be considered Taoist texts?

The second Matrix movie was on TV here last night. We watched a bit of it but gave up. Not as good as the first movie IMO and as for being Taoist or not I suspect the makers dipped into any and all sources they thought would steer the plot. I lurk on a Conspiracy forum now and again and The Matrix movies are forever being cited. They seem to have become a sort of Conspiracy Theorist's Minor Cult. To me a movie is a movie, made to make money and entertain an audience for an hour or two. Nothing more.

  18. Should I Go Buddhist?

Give it a try RyanO. Nothing ventured - nothing gained. If you're not suited to it then you can just move on to something else.
  19. Inner heart or above the head...

There's no 'outer heart'. We'd be in trouble if we had one of those! Not sure if the inner heart is the same as the physiological heart-heart. Also, whereabouts 'above the head'? On the ceiling? Up on the roof? I think you need to be more specific Jeff.
  20. The nature of Tao and its '-ism'

Hello "The Name" and welcome to TTB if this is your first time here. If not then 'welcome back'. I wondered if your.... "Different ideas but not different Tao, therefore only one way is right and all the others are wrong." .... wasn't perhaps a little prescriptive. Might not that approach be a recipe for fundamentalism? It could put rather a lot of power into the hands of those claiming to know and define their "right way" whilst busily excommunicating all those "wrong ways" that they don't agree with.
  21. Herd Mind or Enlightenemnt?

Herd mind implies a herd to belong to and identify with. It's not necessarily a negative thing. For example basic training in the services inculcates a certain group think and strong identification with one's comrades essential for large groups of people to function efficiently especially under pressure. I'm not sure what 'enlightenment' is but those who talk it up strike me as very individualistic people because each seems to have their own individual take on what enlightenment means to them. Hence I don't think that 'herd mind' and 'enlightenment' sit comfortably together.
