Every bit of knowledge that becomes power has death as its central force. Death lends the ultimate touch and whatever is touched by death indeed becomes power.
A man who follows the paths of sorcery is confronted with imminent annihilation every turn of the way, and unavoidably he becomes keenly aware of his death. Without the awareness of death he would be only an ordinary man involved in ordinary acts. He would lack the necessary potency, the necessary concentration that transforms one's ordinary time on earth into magical power.
Thus to be a warrior a man has to be, first of all, and rightfully so, keenly aware of his own death. But to be concerned with death would force any one of us to focus on the self and that would be debilitating. So the next thing one needs to be a warrior is detachment. The idea of imminent death, instead of becoming an obsession, becomes an indifference.
Now you must detach yourself; detach yourself from everything. Only the idea of death makes a man sufficiently detached so he is incapable of abandoning himself to anything. Only the idea of death makes a man sufficiently detached so he can't deny himself anything. A man of that sort, however, does not crave, for he has acquired a silent lust for life and for all things of life. He knows his death is stalking him and won't give him time to cling to anything, so he tries, without craving, all of everything.
A detached man, who knows he has no possibility of fencing off his death, has only one thing to back himself with: the power of his decisions. He has to be, so to speak, the master of his choices. He must fully understand that his choice is his responsibility and once he makes it there is no longer time for regrets or recriminations. His decisions are final, simply because his death does not permit him time to cling to anything.
And thus with an awareness of his death, with his detachment, and with the power of his decisions a warrior sets his life in a strategical manner. The knowledge of his death guides him and makes him detached and silently lusty; the power of his final decisions makes him able to choose without regrets and what he chooses is always strategically the best; and so he performs everything he has to with gusto and lusty efficiency.
When a man behaves in such a manner one may rightfully say that he is a warrior and has acquired patience. When a warrior has acquired patience he is on his way to will. He knows how to wait. His death sits with him on his mat, they are friends. His death advises him, in mysterious ways, how to choose, how to live strategically. And the warrior waits! I would say that the warrior learns without any hurry because he knows he is waiting for his will; and one day he succeeds in performing something ordinarily quite impossible to accomplish. He may not even notice his extraordinary deed. But as he keeps on performing impossible acts, or as impossible things keep on happening to him, he becomes aware that a sort of power is emerging. A power that comes out of his body as he progresses on the path of knowledge. He notices that he can actually touch anything he wants with a feeling that comes out of his body from a spot right below or right above his navel. That feeling is the will, and when he is capable of grabbing with it, one can rightfully say that the warrior is a sorcerer, and that he has acquired will.
A man can go still further than that; a man can learn to see. Upon learning to see he no longer needs to live like a warrior, nor be a sorcerer. Upon learning to see a man becomes everything by becoming nothing. He, so to speak, vanishes and yet he's there. I would say that this is the time when a man can be or can get anything he desires. But he desires nothing, and instead of playing with his fellow men like they were toys, he meets them in the midst of their folly. The only difference between them is that a man who sees controls his folly, while his fellow men can't. A man who sees has no longer an active interest in his fellow men. Seeing has already detached him from absolutely everything he knew before.

That was impeccably raw. I loved it.

It certainly plucked some deeper chords.

  2. I have been interested in strengthening my will lately and found this post.

In my opinion your will power is the ability to manifest your desires.

The stronger your will power then the higher you will soar in our society. The richest and the most "successful" tend to have the strongest of will powers.

One problem with our society is that it eludes that all-important question of what we are, which is what should dictate our actions. But because we are always focused on some task or goal, we will never even address that question! Going about attempting to attain our prize without solving the preliminary step..

This "tree-stump" dude nailed it on the head.

Yes, such an important concept. A few questions and thoughts.

Don't we will what we think will satisfy us?

Doesn't it then stem from a fundamental lack that we feel? The constant reminder of our brokenness?

Yet it seems we forget our original, ontological unity and fill that emptiness with empty ideas. That's how we arrive at such a broken, distorted and ultimately nihilistic will.

I am in college and the only way to get all of my work done (engineering) is to whole-heartedly fixate my mind upon my task. In an effort to evade my fear of not-existing I am concentrating upon whatever it is I am doing.

Atleast I will be getting good grades!!! woooot Will-power!

    IGNORE THE QUESTION :D

  3. El Senor NERD does your girlfriend also cultivate in a similar manner that you do? If not, then please try to minimize any sort of energy exchange. My experience has led me to avoid anything like that without a partner that also practices.

No she does not. She has started to meditate recently but nothing serious at all. I agree with the minimization of energy exchange because that does seem to be where trouble can start to bubble forth.

    thanks for the solid advice

Good recommendation. My first experience of this was an excess amount of energy "pooling" in an area of my body after lovemaking. My partner told me what he did/where he focused his mind to guide his energy. I then asked him to tell me in advance of doing anything similar in the future. That way, I can "work with" the addition of his focused/increased energetics.

With heart centered lovemaking, for many, simply allowing the energetics to spontaneously go where they want/will is sufficient. Perhaps, even ideal. :)

The heart centered love-making is where some of our best times have come from. I think I will be trying to spend my time there when with her :)

    thanks!

  4. Then get a strap-on, do the role reversal thing. :)

When you say "sex", what sex did you mean? genital centric sex? Have you tried whole body sex? Or intimacy? Or emotion sex?

It's a natural progress at your stage. You can't stay on the same level forever. You either move forward or quit.

    hahhaha nice.

And by sex I mean mostly genital centric sex. We have performed karezza a decent amount of times with a few great sessions but never got into a solid period of consistently attempting it.

Could you elaborate on emotion sex. what is this?

  5. Do you two ever argue or have disagreements where you define yourself as separate? As It sounds like emmeshment where there are insufficient boundaries in the relationship, emmeshment is quite common but it isn't particularly sexy as it is regressive in nature. I am no expert but I will mention a few ideas.

There are psychological things you can do as a couple but it depends how radical you want to be. From my own experience I went to a psychotherapist where we did some exercises for example taking it in turns at pushing against each other physically so you push and the other resists until the one pushing has pushed you back a bit, which shows that you are allowed to exert resistance and define physical barriers with the other person. But basically the idea is to aggressively define yourself against the other person for a time but with controlled aggression, which is why controlled arguments and disagreements can be healthy for a couple as you verbally erect barriers as separate for a time. Maybe doing activities where you are in competition with each other could help do this.

You can do other things like imagine your boundary as a bubble around you and then imagine your girlfriend

has one also and they touch but they don't cross into each others.

    Thank you very much Jetsun.

I think that may actually help because believe it or not we never fight fight. Maybe that lack of resistance, although it has created an easygoing relationship, has caused us to blend too much.

I will pass this idea on to my girlfriend, I think it has much promise.

  6. I lift heavy about twice a week. It's been tougher recently feeling like a fukn sally..

I also have read the way of the superior man, thank you for the suggestion.

I am looking more for advice as to what we should do as a couple? Abstain from sex until we feel normal again? Force ourselves to copulate and try to give back the opposite? truly confused..

  7. Hello,

I am looking for advice/help with respect to my relationship with my girlfriend. Her and I have been seeing each other for about a year (I am 20, she is 21) and have recently run into trouble.

Somehow I believe we have improperly exchanged male and female essence resulting in an unbalanced and unhealthy ratio in both her and I. Our sex life was always great but it has petered out over the past month and we have not had sex in a week.

We were talking about our sexual relationship today and neither of feel healthy about it. There was not even enough attraction today to make love even after a week of abstaining.

We both have what seems to be too much of the opposite sex within our psyche. I was meditating today and felt as though half of my energetic body was female. I have been feeling off for a while and acknowledging this made me feel at peace, but I do not think this is right for it seems unnatural.

She said she felt like she looked manly the other day and I swear looking in the mirror today my face appeared feminine. We both feel lethargic, energy-less and do not know what to do.

We both admitted that we have even been having some homosexual feelings recently and have never felt like this before. Possibly attracted to the sexual energy that we need?

Is this reversible? Neither of us planned for this to happen nor truly desired it.

I must right this. She was so upset today I just can not take it.

This is hard to write and I humbly ask for any help that you can offer. I have no idea what this is and have not heard of something like this.

    Thank you,

  8. "The reason for "turning the light around" is to recover this source progenitor of objective awareness to use the light to see delusion. Creation itself is delusion. It has form but no inherent reality. The absolute is itself the source of awareness. It is utterly immaterial, yet real. The Heart Sutra states, "Form is formless; formlessness is form."

    I really like this :)

So all there is to do is rest in objective awareness, for what else should I seek?

There is no seems about it. One is embedded in the situation. HELL, you are the situation. Only you see it from your perspective whether it is objective or deluded. So, naturally the sane choice is to see through delusion, hmmmm?!!

    hehehehe I deserved that :P

I need to make more sane decisions in my life...

  9. Hello Deci Belle,

"The secret of the golden flower is turning the light of creation itself around so as to illuminate its source.

The term "turning the light around" is attributed to the adept Wenshi."

Is the basic premise to maintain awareness upon where your very own awareness is coming from? (IME an area behind the eyes and slightly lower than them, possibly the pineal gland?) And then to maintain your awareness upon that source throughout your daily experiences?

This would align itself with other writings that tell you to never lose the "source progenitor".

In this way a person seems to be able to elevate themselves above the situation entirely and address people from THE NEXT LEVEL :D

I am wondering because isn't a main taoist theme to maintain your awareness within your LDT and for me the turning around of the light seems to keep my attention in my head. Then again I may have it all wrong :D

Also I am excited to see this thread emerge because I just bought the book 2 days ago! But apparently y'all are telling me the Wilhelm version is not nearly as good as Cleary's and of course I bought the WIlhelm... :(

  10. "There is simply no other exercise, and certainly no machine, that produces the level of central nervous system activity, improved balance and coordination, skeletal loading and bone density, muscular stimulation and growth, connective tissue stress and strength, psychological demand and toughness, and overall systemic conditioning as the correctly performed full squat."

Starting strength was my absolute favorite lifting plan, and I have fallen in love with the compound lifts ever since. Nothing better than getting below 90 on those squats :D

  12. I think that you guys will get a kick out of this. Daniel Kahneman describes individuals as having two seperate selves. The experiencing self and the memory self. He talks about a significant difference between being happy IN your life vs. being happy ABOUT your life. They are distinctly different.

People associate far too much with the story of their lives rather than their life as it is experienced.

But, if with a bad flow of vital energy you encounter others,

They will harm you with their weapons."

I really like this part of the chapter :)

In my own experience as I still my mind I need less and less help from thoughts and other people trying to figure out what kind of a person someone is.

You can just tell, it is a feeling/knowing that is there but not normally picked up.

I know this is an old thread but whattup, the Nei-yeh seems very interesting

  14. Just to add another wrinkle in the equation...

the 8 principles of zhan zhuang (Embracing Horse) as taught by my Nei kung instructor, and his instructor, Master Chu (www.chutaichi.com) are

    1.head suspended

2.pelvis tucked in, toe in and knees out

    3. chest concave

    4. Body rounded

    5. Shoulders and elbows lowered.

    6. Waist loose

    7. "Qua" loose

    8. Deep breathing (diaphragmatic)

" 'Toe in and knee out' means slightly pushing the knees outward and pulling the toes inward in such a manner as to create a tension in the tendons and the legs thus focusing most of the body weight on the heels and outer edges of the feet. The insides edges of the feet can be raised off the ground, if necessary, depending on the structure of the individual's foot. This aspect of alignment enhances the stability of the lower body." From "The Book of Nei Kung"

I would add that the goal is to create a sense of roundedness in the legs as if you were holding a beachball with your knees. Standing on the edge of the feet stretches and recruits the iliotibial band. There is evidence that tendon and cartilege facilitate the movement of chi due to there piezoelectric quality.

Encephalon this is some of the best advice I have found on ZZ posture yet. My knees have definitely had too much weight rested on them and your toes in knees out comment is GOLD! Couldn't be more grateful for this :D

  15. Hello T.S.

I think the scariest part of going within is finding out how little you may actually know about yourself. One must learn to practice equanimity in all situations or you will allow these dark feelings and emotions to overtake you.

This has helped me to get through repressed feelings and enter into subconscious parts of myself that I may never have known existed. It is described in the book The Master Game by Robert S. de Ropp. He calls it the inner film or something along those lines.

First you should go within yourself as deep as you feel comfortable. Then you imagine a sort of screen in the field of your vision. From there all you have to do is wait :) After a while some faint image or scene will enter your awareness and you must objectively observe it. No matter what it is! If you become scared when it first comes up this is good! It means you are onto some deep shit and you must continue to focus on it :D The key is to remain an observer and nothing more. In this way you can begin to integrate aspects of your subconscious mind into your conscious mind and learn who you truly are on a deeper level.

I wish you the best of luck

  16. Hello Wise Bums,

I am in need of some help and as usual I turn to the internet :D

Recently I have self diagnosed a problem within myself but am not sure what the cause / treatment could possibly be. In meditation I realized that the right half of my body seems to lack a quality of inner space to it. It is as if I have been residing in only the left half of myself without even realizing that I wasn't completely within. It has also been throwing off my inner sense, and when I would go to focus on a dan tien they were extremely hard to find because instead of being in the center line of my being they were on my right peripheral. I have just recognized it as almost a numbing of inner space where before it seemed to have been almost unconscious that that area wasn't even occupied by my awareness.

I began consciously bringing my focus into my right half and it seems to have a balancing effect but when I am not actively doing this I lose that balance.

Has anyone ever heard of someone losing inner sense / does anyone have a recommendation for what I could do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

    peace and love

  17. I read that colored mucous is a sign your body is fighting an infection. That the color is from dead invaders. The article went on to say eating it is like taking in a vaccine of deactivated virus. I don't know if that makes sense, if the color theory is correct and if such a thing would survive stomach acid or do any good.

But..when I'm sick, I'll eat my colorful boogers. There's a salty sweetness to them that tastes good.

Well.. there goes my chance for political office.

    hahahahahaha

From a Chinese medicine perspective, phelgm (not saliva) is considered pathogenic waste that can obstruct the channels, collaterals and mind. It is a product as well as cause to a variety of diseases. This substance affects the body's fluid metabolism, leading to a stasis of chi. It is common for Individuals seen at the Chinese medicine clinic to be treated for conditions resulting from phelgm such as lethargy, obesity, mental fog, headaches and much more. Some common methods by which excess phelgm can develop include over consumption of dairy products (cold-phelgm), negative emotional states (invisible-phelgm, internal) and pervasive alcohol use (heat-phelgm). Smoking can also burn fluids and damage the lung leading to copius phelgm.

In ayurveda, the substance is known as "amma".

If you are coughing phelgm frequently, you may want to consider changing your dietary and lifestyle habits or seeing a Chinese medicine practitioner to improve your fundamental metabolic and pulmonary health. Also, prolonged coughing itself is a stress to the system, sending excess nerve impulses, wearing on the musculature, and can add stress to the spine and ribs throwing off structural alignment.

*To note, I have been an academic, graduate level student of Chinese medicine and Acupuncture.

Thank you for this helpful knowledge, honestly I smoke weed and I am pretty sure this is where most of it comes from. I have cut back dramatically and the phlegm has decreased. So yes this is the lifestyle habit that I need to change...

  18. Just a quick question folks, is phlegm considered jing or no? I stopped spitting my saliva out a while ago but have continued to spit all my darn loogies (I hack up a decent amount...) Is it just waste or should it be kept within the body?

    Thanks yall

  19. At this point I have no clue what Christian has said so I have nothing to comment on there...

    so what isn't an illusion?

the mayans knew that the tropical year was 365 point-whatever-it-is days long. Their Ha'ab (solar) calendar didn't reflect that, and the tropical year wasn't relevant to the long count (the one that ends on 12-21-12), which is what mckenna is talking about. But the Mayans and their calendars have recorded time accurately enough to surmise when the big bang was, when biological life emerged, when primates emerged, and other phenomenal accomplishments. All this can be read about, i suggest Carl Johan Calleman for starters.

time moves in patterns. If it is an illusion, so is everything else (the point of my unanswered questions up there) and knowing about it only gives one agency over and within it. So maaaybe the scholarship of McKenna, and likewise the Mayans, can be used to liberate and empower people.

    just sayin

    edited for clarity

Thank you for the reference to Carl Johan Calleman I'm going to have to check out his writings, I don't know two cents about the Mayan Calendar but am very interested.

Anamatva what is your opinion on the upcoming December, do you think there are changes in store for us? At least any sudden kinds?

  20. This is an amazing interview with Terence Mckenna that I thought you guys would like. He gets into discussing the I ching at about 10 minutes or so.
