  1. Haha countless people have realized no self since the Buddha and none reported any psychological damage or any kind of adverse effects. All reported liberation.

On the other hand, it is the fiction of self that people believe and cling to that makes the world crazy, suffer, experience craving, hatred, fear, alienation, etc etc resulting in all manners of violence, rape, war, crimes, etc

The use words like ALL and NONE seems rather exclusive in a con(trolling type of way.

oops a typo :o My bad.

  2. Please no biomechanical spirit implants for me. They probably advertise them as only enhancers.

The shapeshifting goat guy sure made a major faux pas.

I reckon , that the link between reincarnation and evolution has been discussed on TTB?

:)Ah, the coming and going :)

  3. Why wouldn't Taoists want to look at issues like science, biology, history etc. Do you not have your own ideas about how the universe works?

You might have a new or unique perspective on these things.

It's like someone mentioned, with Chinese scientists, they might not get so polarized in debates and might not always get trapped into looking at it in polarized ways.

I think you have also had threads about Taijiquan, Baguazhang, different aspects of Qi, the Brain, and so forth. Why should anyone care what topic you choose to start a thread about as long as it is not attacking anyone?

Some of your threads get alot of views, others not so much. A thread will run its own course naturally. If anyone chooses to participate or not is their choice. How many threads have there been on the subject of Penis? Some of those threads get alot of views and replies. It is very subjective business to say which thread belongs or not IMO.

I have also observed that many of the folks who complain about someone bringing politics or religion into the conversation ARE the very ones who do so themself.

Immortal4life, I have to give you credit for maintaining your cool and staying polite

    throughout the dicscussion.

  4. Hello folks,

I'm not sure why it matters what Immortal4Life is? If he is a Christian, more power to him. If he feels compelled to save others from damnation, and he did nothing about it, well what does that say about him? What do you accomplish by denouncing him or his beliefs? If he writes something and you don't like it, you're not obligated to say something about it. Rather than make accusations and pronouncements of guilt, I'm wondering if it's better to just let him be?

On a side note, when I decide who I should listen to and who I shouldn't, the first thing I do is view how they treat others. Those people quick to accuse, point fingers, and call others names, usually have nothing to offer me, except an object lesson in the necessity of compassion.

    Aaron

Good Point. I have not seen him trying to convert anyone to any religion.

I have seen him hammer away at Science . Which is fair game IMO.

I may not have any idea about the "scientific method"

But I have observed alot , just by watching these threads.

  5. Thanks Twinner :)

To continue with my Formula, I do not see how consciousness/awareness can ever be anything but a Mystery. How can you Know what it is, when Knowing itself is an event that happens within it?

or, Can a person with zero consciousness ever known something?

Consciousness/awareness are the single prerequsite for all knowledge and experience.

You can not become conscious of consciousness. What you can do, is take more notice of the objects and events within consciousness, including noticing in greater detail that you are 'aware' of stuff.

Even If you Have Great realisations [like me :D ] of the Oneness that is consciousness behind/within everything those are still experiences within Consciousness or ?, not ? It self.

Consciousness is an experiencing thing, and that is about all we can say about it.

Also In the ? -> O I have to point out that -> is not the Ego, Its just a way of describing that ? experiences O, and not the other way around.

If anything Ego is in the realm O or Object, as It is an observable phenomona.

    Have Fun ;)

I look at conscious as the adjective and consciousness as the noun.

If we subsitute non-consciousness or unconsciousness(these are 2 different things)

for your zero consciousness, will that retain the essence of your question?

You are adressing a human conciousness here only, correct?

  6. Hello Lazy Cloud,

Well it is my consciousness, but it's your consciousness as well. Really much of what I am explaining comes from Vendanta Hinduism, only with some twists. The difference being, since I am not a "spiritual" man, I've decided to try and understand it for what it is, without those things that I think are superstitious (and mind you they are only superstitious to me, for others they are quite real so I'm not dismissing them, just explaining why I did this).

So far as answering the big questions, I don't think there are big questions, only questions and answers and if we truly wish to understand, then we must both ask the question and when we know the answer, be willing to answer it. True compassion is sharing our knowledge with others, whether it's teaching someone how to copy and paste a file, tie a hook to their fishing line, or explaining the nature or reality. Of course the trick is to remember that there really is no such thing as a stupid question, so when someone asks a question, treat them with as much respect as if they were asking you for food for their starving child. If you have no food, apologize and suggest where they can find it, but if you do have food, then share it with them.

    Aaron

    Howdy Aaron,

If I look back to where I first read about this Connected Consciousness, it probably would have been in Marcus Aurelius' Meditations.

I still look at this as a very diverse subject. Thus lending itself to alot of Subjectivity.

I think you have given me the green light to ask questions :)

This consciousness that we are sharing, is it a Human consciousness,or a Larger consciousness?

Forgive me if I have no understanding about Vendanta Hinduism.

So, if you could describe the Features of the consciousness we are discussing here on this thread, that would be helpful for me.

    Is this consciousness an Entity?

Is it life based or more based on electro-magnetic fields?

    What are its features?

I feel if we can establish this foundation it will keep our conversation from sprawling to the nether-realms.

  7. I read the book The Call of The Wild.

In that tale as well, the dog, "Buck" certainly did not have a smooth ride either.

Many obstacles and hardships were endured. In the end Buck answered the call.

    I liked that story.

I don't mind the challenges I find in my way now. luckily I have tasted some little results.

I recently read a story about this guy named Cloud Chief.

There is just too much wisdom contained in these Taoist Writings and Practices,

for me not to hear a faint call.

  8. It seems to me that traditions can get all a bit to cavalier and 'certain' when it comes to what ever Consciousness/Awareness is.

Where is the Socratic Wisdom of recognising what we do not know, and being Honest about the limits of our Knowledge?

I would like to propose a formula describing Consciousness which contains the Inherit Mystery of the nature of Consciousness.

    That formula is:

    ? -> O

The ? represents consciousness/awareness as the mystery that it is.

The -> arrow represents the direction of observation

The letter O stands for Object or the observed.

So Mysterious consciousness observes stuff. The O or observed parts represent all perceptions, subtle or dense, all experiences spiritual or earthly, and everything that can be Known or thought or believed.

The Arrow, or direction of observation can not be changed. Certain Non dual teachings may give one the sense that the arrow has dissolved, leaving only ConsciousObject... and the stranger experiences that may follow, But all the Interpretation that follows is really based on nothing.

As the arrow can not be turned around no solid conclusions can be drawn about where it came from.

An experience no matter how 'Non dual' is still only an Object O had by ?

This is In no way meant to devalue the experiences had by all the ?'s of people here, as they are great. Realising that ?/you are behind everything or maybe unseperatable from all the O is great.

Acknowledging the Mysterious/unknowable nature of ? also leaves no room for grasping so hopefully [but unlikely] that will settle the Buddhists down.

    Great Respek!

IMO Around the very first campfire in a cave in pre-historic times, the folks there wondered and questioned about consciousness. This is a subject that will always lead to more and more questions.

I have noticed one thing about Twinner, in that he does not shy away from the Big Questions. I respect that.

  9. Still just not hearin' the love.

I am still wondering about the consciousness Twinner if referring to?

I will think of it for now as Twinner's Consciousness :)

@Manitou, are you suggesting there may be a consciousness that equates with Love?

    emoticons are contagious

    Pure Consciousness = Pure Love ??? :wub::wub:

  10. I look forward to the consciousness is consciousness answer. As I tend to view conscious and consciousness , both as umbrella terms.(Conceptual Pluarity) Until then I will wonder if our consciousness topic will include any of the following concepts:

awareness, cognitive psychology, perception and comprehension, sentience, wakefullness, self-awareness, Qualia, self-knowledge, states we are aware of, consciousness as an entity,

    is it a noun,adjective, verb..,

    is it life-like ? electro-magnetic ? neural?

Even a crude basic look at this for me is problematic.

3 questions, what is, how is or even how can, and why?

    Subjectivity?

Or are going to look at Transitive consciousness or Access consciousness, involving a form of meta-mentality or meta-intionality? where is the link?

William James(1890) Stream of Consciousness. Consciousness as a dynamic process.

Will this be a difficult topic because of the inherent differences between our subjective and objective modes of understanding?
