  1. "Shen" is a fine inner soul name! My own name Dale works because it means "valley", and in Chap. 6 of the Tao Te Ching it speaks of the "Valley Spirit" (Gu Shen). Also, dividing the letters I get "Da Le", meaning "Great Joy" in Chinese.

Thanks sincerely for your inner support. I will surely reinforce you--I support my own godsons that way. I...

  2. So you probably have some lingering Oregon moisture in you, too! :) I haven't been back to Portland for 15 yrs or so, though; I've lived in Cambridge, MA and Denver, CO; and have lived in MT 3 different times. I've been back here for about 5 years now, probably will stay here. I'll keep you in my positive thoughts and meditations for your success in your martial arts and...

  3. Thanks so much for your comments on the FP discussion board -- they've been a great help! - Dale

  4. Hi James! I live in Montana, in Bozeman, and work at Montana State University there. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, though, so I know all about living in the Pacific Northwest.

You might consider, at some point, getting a region-free DVD player. They have them on Amazon. The one I got was about $40, and then I just entered a special code into the remote to make it ...

  5. By the way, the syllable "Shen" in Chinese has 3 very appropriate meanings for you (different characters, but still "shen") -- Shen can mean "spirit", it can mean "body", and it can mean "smile". The true inner smile is always the mark of the Master, you know--he who has mastered spirit and body! :) - Dale

  6. Shaolin Gongfu will be great! Keep me posted on your progress. At some point in training, Shaolin has some chi kung associated with it, too--all genuine Kung Fu systems have it. Hope you're having a fine day! -- Dale

  7. Flying Phoenix Chi Kung

Hi! I know that Grandmaster Doo Wai says in the 2nd Level DVD (produced 2004 by Rizzos White Tiger Kungfu, $19.95): "You have to understand that there's going to be similar names, but different meditations." He says that right before demonstrating the first of 4 meditations. Perhaps he's saying the same thing that Sillum just said here? [And perhaps Sifu Garry's thinking of "names" in a different way, or from a different point of view.] I may be the only person on the forum right now who has watched this video. I treasure having it and seeing the Grandmaster. After I'm proficient with the meditations on Sifu Terry's DVDs, I plan to learn the 4 meditations the Grandmaster demonstrates, since I'm not in a position to travel and study personally with anyone and have to depend on whatever authentic video instruction is available. I appreciate hearing the thoughts of any advanced students of Grandmaster. And once again I'm very grateful to Sifu Terry for publishing a full series of DVDs with the fundamental teaching and practice for Flying Phoenix. Namaste, Dale
  8. Flying Phoenix Chi Kung

Hi! I agree. Sifu Terry's DVD series is invaluable and really cannot be by-passed (unless you're the rare person studying in person with a direct disciple of GM Doo Wai, or with the GM himself!). Nowhere else on video is the FP system taught systematically. The currently available DVD with GM Doo Wai is a dessert; it's Terry who has laid out the main course for us. We owe Sifu Terry an ocean of gratitude for doing this. Dale
  9. Hi Shen! I like watching dragon styles of Kung Fu, and I know a dragon style qigong that I do regularly--it includes a lot of twisting and bending, etc. Dragons are cool, especially Chinese dragons! :) - Dale

  10. Flying Phoenix Chi Kung

Hi, I'm not sure if Terry teaches any of these on his DVDs; they seem to be different meditations, labeled "Level 2". It's great, though, to have the opportunity to see Grandmaster Doo Wai teaching. More DVDs (Levels 3, 4, 5) are projected for the future, when the Grandmaster gives permission to release them; they are listed on: https://www.flyingphoenix.us Since I plan on practicing Flying Phoenix the rest of my life, the more of the system that comes forth, the merrier for me! Namaste, Dale
  11. Flying Phoenix Chi Kung

Hi Shen, That's great! It's basically what I just did, and those first 2 DVDs are powerful, while also being very simple. You should feel it within a few days if not immediately, as long as you put in regular practice daily. I'm on my second week of using the meditations, and there's no question that my energy field is shifting. I feel lighter, more energy, more calm and joy. So go for it! I wish I had known about this when I was 23 ! Namaste, Dale
  12. Flying Phoenix Chi Kung

Hi Lloyd, Well, I'm definitely a beginner in Ch'i Kung ! I'll certainly keep you posted; I'll have the opportunity to practice quite a lot over the next several months. I was glad to read about your positive experiences with FP. I don't have any attachments to what it will do in me or for me, though I know it will be good for me. I already feel quite different, much lighter, or maybe bouyant is the better word, after a week of at least a couple hours practice a day. So onward and upward! Thanks for your input. Dale
  13. Hi!

Hi Everyone! I just joined the Board. I've been practicing Buddhist and Taoist chanting and meditations for many years, and last year started seriously learning Ch'i Kung, too. Right now I'm earnestly learning the Flying Phoenix Ch'i Kung system. I wish everyone here a wonderful year 2011 ! Dale
  14. Flying Phoenix Chi Kung

Hi Everyone, I'm new, and just jumping in. I'm just finishing up my first week of practicing FP. I took a week off work so I could plunge in and do it intensively. I'm really happy and impressed, and looking forward to this whole year (and beyond) of serious application. I've learned the basic standing and sitting meditations (volumes 1 & 2), and the 90-second ones (volume 5). I'm working on the 2 advanced standing ones this weekend (volume 3), then I'll tackle the long form (volume 4). I'm still waiting for the advanced sitting meds (volume 7) to come in the mail. By "learned" I mean I can do them without the video, though I haven't memorized all the breath sequences yet and have to consult a sheet where I have them all written down. Last night I also learned a sitting meditation demonstrated directly by GM Doo Wai, on the "Level 2 Meditations with Grandmaster Doo Wai" DVD that Rizzo's White Tiger Kung Fu has produced. The GM demonstrates 4 meditations on that DVD (copyright 2004). So I'm well launched, and it already feels good and can only get better. Btw, on the warm-ups question, I haven't used them, I just go straight to the meditations. I encountered FP for the first time a couple weeks ago, and started practicing one week ago. I had been exploring Ch'i Kung for about six months, was getting some good results, but felt there was something more. I do Buddhist practice, and right before New Years was communing with the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra (or Puxian, in Chinese) about some spiritual issues. So now a couple weeks later I encounter FP, and then find out it was revealed on Mt. Ehrmei, which is sacred to Puxian. And I wasn't even communing with Puxian about Ch'i Kung! In a few more days I'll feel qualified to post some good reviews on Amazon for Terry's DVDs, since I notice he requested some. I wish Sifu Terry well on his challenging legal battle. Last night while doing the sitting meditation on DVD with GM Doo Wai, I saw behind him a large statue of Kuan Yin. It reminded me that in her esoteric tradition, Kuan Yin can hold an axe which symbolizes and focuses her power to cut through injustice, including in all legal situations. She has a number of such specific powers. So may Kuan Yin help Sifu Terry with her Axe of Justice ! I look forward to learning more through the Forum. Thanks for everyone's contributions. Namaste, Dale
  15. Hi! I practice Taoist and Buddhist yogic methods, and just recently started the Flying Phoenix Ch'i Kung, which I like a lot.
