  1. Just was wondering what some good books where for beginners in buddhism. I have read some of a tibetan dream yoga book, but other than that I have no solid grasp in the foundations of mindfullness, meditation, ect, ect.

Also I have not decided what school I am going to practice (therevada, mahayana, or vajrayana). So I would like some recomendations to some books which cover there differences (or summaries from those with knowledge)

A mega free books on Buddhism - as well as free DVDs can be found at this address:

The owner's name is Joan - just tell her you heard of it from a guy on a bicycle that had a beard - send her enough cash to pay for the postage.

  2. How can one become immortal by adding on to your own nature?

If by nature, you are not immortal, how is it possible for this nature to change into one that is immortal?

And if by nature, you are immortal, then how is it possible to gain what you already are?

Immortality is staring at you and you choose to be blind?

Actually, spanking your monkey will make you blind.

Immortality of the body is in your genetics.

Immortality of the self is seen in the The Savasana.

The Savasana allows you to choose your next birthmother.

"How is it possible to gain what you already are?"

Open your eyes to see the world as it is.

Your Heaven and hell is created by you - in your children:

Your children are the bearers of your next life.

Charles Darwin noticed a repetition of genetics every 3rd generation.

  3. The lesson is that ignorance has a price.

    Learn to think for yourself.

Alchemy is simply using Metaphors - albeit in an acient (dead) language AKA: 'conceptual metaphor.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conceptual_metaphor

    Metaphor

Definition: Metaphor is when you use two nouns and compare or contrast them to one another. Unlike simile, you don't use "like" or "as" in the comparison.

    Examples

    I am a rainbow

"I am a rainbow" is a example of metaphor because it is comparing two nouns, a person, and a rainbow, but does not use like or as.

    I am not Anger

"I am not anger" is an example of metaphor because it is contrasting two nouns.

    MY LIFE IS A DREAM

    My life is a dream,

    like a tiger waking

    up from her deep sleep.

    My life is like

    a dream,

    it's all

    up

    to

    me,

    the trees

    are

    purple,

    the

    stars

    talk

    away

    the night,

    the

    moaning moon

    lights

    up the sky.

  4. Good evening everybody.

    Gunjin

Interesting - I was just thinking of going to Guam for a look-see. Is there camping there? How's the ocean? Most places in Pacific, even Hawaii, are getting too polluted :(

I keep a base in Hong Kong where I study Chinese philosophy, culture etc...

Congradulations in your delving into history and true meanings. I did the same - with the same results.

Buddhism has evolved into a education into philosophy -not a religion- with a basis in meditation.

Ch'an Buddhism = Chinese style Buddhism AKA Zen Buddhism.

Buddhism points to the way being that: "No one can forgive you but you" (Self Reliance for being a bad guy)

Here is a good website on Buddhism: http://www.amtbweb.org/tchem001.htm

Tao is a slightly different critter as it is also about meditation but has taken into it sciences, philosophy, ancestor worship based in reincarnation, and a few styles of yoga. Taoist Yoga = mainly Kundalini as seen in the Taoist Book "The Secret of the Golden Flower."

The problem with Taoism comes largely from it being written in an ancient alchemical language (A represenative style such as: To have a 'golden heart' = a person with a 'good heart' toward others)

The Chinese Taoists call basic meditation "Inner Cultivation" as it is seen as a way to improve one's inner self. I tend to agree. I see inner cultivation as empty mind meditation.

As far as a 'combination of both' - I take what suits me and leave the rest.

Evolution proves Reincarnation to be true.

  5. Communism (Socialism) isn't hell at all. It is just different. I was born in USSR and I know a little about that.

Communism and Capitalism are 2 sides of the same coin.

Communism is used for a developing economy whereas the government subsidizes particular intrests to help them develop.

Capitalism is used within a developed economy to create competition within the economy.

If the people do not think for themselves - they become sheep being led to the slaughter - by TV, news etc... Remember smoking is healthy ads on TV? Beer is sexy.... etc.

  6. Bingo, can't add to such a wise reply.

    Michael

I tend to follow Michael's observation but would like to add that 'A farmer clears his field before planting so that old growth does not intefere with the new.'

This translates into: Learn some basic exercises and meditation such as given in "The Five Tibetans" which will align your body and begin to empty the mind for new growth.

If you can master the simple exercises in the 85 page booklet - you will have an excellent beginning.

I've known masters with many years of training - they would only give simple step by step methods for meditation first - and then hang around to answer questions about what was happening. Much like what is happening from your first post on this topic...

In my opinion, the Key to the Tao is in my signature - at the bottom of this post:

  7. I finally found the original quote from Terry Pratchett Science of Discworld on what a privative is. SO I decided to add it to this thread:

Pietro, Pietro, Pietro... Good analytical technique !

Polarities are one point but kinda already said in the Yin / Yang thing.

The extremes were pointed to a long time ago - what is needed is a roadmap of the in-between.

    With that said -

How about a new toy for the hungry mind of a tiger?

In science, nothing is truly original.

This says, in essence, that we can only notice what nature makes and copy it.

    As such, what is enlightenment?

If it is rebirth... then to recreate enlightment we must study:

Firstly - how do we recreate the conditions of being born ?

Secondly - what happens as we are born?

  8. Thanks jK. Evidently I have some problem(s) I am not aware of.

    Thankyou for pointing them out.

I can only hope someone one day figures out what your problems are and points them out to you.

They try but I simply look at the source and forget to listen.

Search engines really are easy to use.

  9. Lost control of what?

Who calls it "The Guardian of the Gate"?

    You're having a problem reading?

    Try rereading a few times.

Guardian of the Gate is a term from Raja Yoga that yoga's use to describe a barrier that must be crossed.

Search engines work for me - what is Your problem?

  10. Have been having kundalini experiences for the past two years now and they have not been well to say the least. My third eye is starting to open and I am having semi-clear visions of snake entities, snake eyes, and sometimes a blue eye (I have brown eyes) that is in the center of my head. I also am developing clairvoyance outside of my inner eye.

Anyways..I would like some people to share their kundalini experiences they have had and share some good ways to deal and develop the energy.

Halucinogens will not activate it - What has happened is that you have lost controll.

You are meeting what is called "The Guardian of the Gate" which is your fears, hopes and desires in a lucid dream like halucenogenic state of mind.

Good luck as you have done this to yourself.

The only way out of the trip is Vitamin B Complex and Vitamin C in average doses. B Complex is the mind's vitamin. According to what you took - it may take some time to get it out of your system.

If the situation gets too heavy the hippies used to titrate the halucinations with medical pot but that is very expensive and some places it is illegal without a Dr.'s prescription ...

  11. One of the things I enjoyed most about being in the Army was travelling to different countries and learning as much as I could about their customs.

    Peace & Love!

The military mindset is that it is OK and all else is not OK - it is a mindset of War.

The philosophy of China is based on balance and harmony: not War. China sees you as OK and itself as OK untill you prove differently.

I've watched the military come to Hong Kong - they leave the ships in little groups and never leave their security blanket.

Almost all of my time in China and Hong Kong, I have been the only foreigner in a 35 floor apartment building 8 families per floor. The exceptions are when I spent 2 years living in a house next to the temple, and monestary, of 10,000 Buddhas in Sha Tin so as to learn from example. During that time I became good friends with the caretaker of the Taoist temple at the top of the mountain and was invited to the celebration of ancestors - their most sacred day of thanks to their ancestors.

There was also the 2 years I spent in Kowloon City living with the new immigrants from mainland China as I studied their family and social structure. I was the only foreigner there. Including myself, there were 8 families on my floor that each had one room for sleeping. We all shared the same kitchen and toilet. I had the only phone. All the families had children. At night we would play soccer with an empty 2 liter pepsi bottle in the hallway between the bedrooms.

The Brits built the airport so that, to land, planes had to fly about 50 meters over the rooftops of Kowloon City. I landed there in 1997 in one of the last flights to the airport in the folowing video. Here is a video of where I lived:

Needless to say, Rent was cheap, experience was tremendous.

When the Chinese took over, they closed the airport down and built a world class state of the art airport

I return to USA to work when I need $ which is about every 2 years.

If you want to learn the Tao, you got to walk and talk with the people that have lived it for over 2,000 years.

  12. Very important consideration here, I think.

And I agree, this is not intended to be offending.

If we live the Way of Tao we will naturally attract others without making a single effort toward leading or controlling others.

    Peace & Love!

Hmmmm - how can it intended to be offending? I'm just an ordinary guy writing a letter to a cute Fish and a Peace & Love marblehead (is you a hard statue?)

But... I do reserve the right to dissagree.

Taoists have long been the most analytical of people on the globe.

    These guys actually invented: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_inventions

Hey! I'm writing but look who's reading it :)

Joking aside - to do even a little R&D into the customs & traditions of a nation 25% to 50% of the way around the earth from home - we got to have open minds to changes, of all types, not seen at home.

The ancient painting of Bamboo in the Snow illustrates the skill of flexability needed for survival. Using it, Bamboo survives where other plants die.

I was born and lived untill 17 in the Appalachian mountains where a large religion is snake dancing to prove god loves you so much the snake will not bite. (If they did, then the devil wanted you anyway...

  13. A document with spaces (fields) in which to write or select, for a series of documents with similar contents 7?

A class or grouping of students in a school 7?

Yes: A class or grouping of students in a school (form 7) that is final year before entering University in Hong Kong style school system.

Western comparison to 2nd year university or above.

Your ethics & morals are Confucian AKA Chinese style.
