  1. Endings

I can understand how attached people are to comfort, but I don't see how people can be blind to how fragile life and the Earth is. There are a number of things that can cease life unexpectedly, not to mention the the current worries or strange geologic afoot. I am amazed people can be worried that a bum in an alley will mug them, but will vehemently deny that Global cartels bully nations into favorable resource trade, or actively stifle competition through monopoly. Or that certain first world nations prefer a docile and stupid population, where they can pick the leaders and engineers from a small pool of the elites' offspring, following the ancient tradition of arrogant nepotism. Sure, there are many who climb a ladder in think tanks, politics, companies, etc., but people don't seem to realize the overwhelming competition that exists when attempting to change the world or better your station in the face of elite social circles and other corrupt networking. Concurrently, people can believe in mystical connotations to alter reality, or chants, symbols and other alchemical artifacts to manipulate energy or others-- but these same people will laugh at others for their notions of "taboo" or silly subjects. Even with all these strong perception biases attacking each other; it's all so impermanent. ( ) The ruling elites will want to build a new world upon these current conflicts-- the whole world is revolting, from Wisconsin to Arabia-- and its shape depends on the energy of the people. We can't let them use the energy from fear in these events to steal the minds of humanity further.
  2. Super Moon March 19

Haha, you edited it again. Never mind the detractors, it may sound silly but it is still interesting and I am curious to what you had to say. I live near the Fallon military base and people have been saying it was active during the past few days. Perhaps I was seeing something from that.
  3. Super Moon March 19

Torus: a few days ago you had a post asking "Did you guys see that?" then you cleared it, but I was outside a few minutes after for another reason, when I saw weird movement around the moon's light-- it was cloudy, but odd shapes and shadows moved fast. I'm not too sure what it was because I don't ever see "ufo"s. What did you see? One of those weird spirals was found near a remote solar system a week ago...
  4. Is there a preferred white rice?

I prefer short-grain white rice-- Japanese, or "Calrose" rice. Unfortunately Japan doesn't export their delicious rice. Short grain provides a lighter, stickier texture. Long grain feels weird and loose on my tongue, and is easily "mushy" instead of "sticky". Alton Brown did an informative episode of rice on "Good Eats" a few years back.
  5. Buddhism transcends the Tao

Excellent piece of wisdom... let us remember the Vinegar Tasters.
  6. The Taoist / Buddhist Debate

Why can't Buddhist theorists and Taoist practitioners speak harmoniously of each other instead of "debating metaphysics"? It is fun, sure, but everyone just rehashes the debates of centuries past.
  7. Japan

If 10% of what Fulford reports on is somewhat based in truth, then it may already be too late. 2011 has become weird enough, stay vigilant!
  8. How static or plastic is traditional "Daoism" seen from the inside view? If Taoists have been influenced from pre-existing folk animism and shaman rituals, and went on to influence Ch'an philosophy and Shugendo mysticism, what can be called authentic... if only measured by distance or Occidental/Oriental palates?
  9. The Dark Knight has the audience cheering for fascism.
  10. Comic book stories have already-established universes, so they are easy to build a quick movie around. Plus some have fan-bases that will see it no matter what. I imagine most are a no-brainer for return profit, in producers' eyes. (Except maybe The Spirit.) You will see a bunch of these Marvel movies because they are building up to an "Avengers" movie, but each characters' own movies have little agendas, like Transhumanism in Iron Man.
  11. Super Moon March 19

I wonder if it ties to the current crisis in Tokyo.
  12. Poems

Kobayashi Issa, 1827: a corrupt world in its latter days... however: cherry blossoms! masse matsudai demo sakura sakura kana Or something more modern: Late Lament by Graeme Edge (1974) Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy spent. Impassioned lovers wrestle as one, Lonely man cries for love and has none. New mother picks up and suckles her son, Senior citizens wish they were young. Cold hearted orb that rules the night, Removes the colors from our sight. Red is grey and yellow white, But we decide which is right. And which is an illusion?

  14. Kwai Chang Caine: Kung-fu

Here's an interesting interview with Bruce Lee, where he discusses the "Warrior's Way" (to be known as Kung Fu) tv show. Gives background to the setting and time. Lee even laments he may not be able to act in the show because he is Chinese. http://www.archive.org/details/BruceLeeTheLostInterview1971
  15. Kwai Chang Caine: Kung-fu

Survivorman does go it alone, he carries the cameras along with him. It is the Man vs. Wild guy who has the camera crew and stays in hotels while shooting overnight. Carradine was a conflicted soul-- battled his own demons. Once, he was fished out of a tree while high. But his Kung Fu show was good, I even enjoyed KF: The Legend Continues. The show changed his personal views and practices, which I think he wrote about in "Spirit of Shaolin". Strange about his death, though... I think Thai ladyboys murdered him for money. Maybe mobsters.
  16. Addictions and Compulsions

I've noticed the excessive coffee and cigarettes at AA meetings, too. That kind of ties into the title of this thread, maybe something which would be explored further. If people are just trading down addictions (eating, caffeine, alcohol, spiritualism, nicotine, THC, pharmaceuticals, etc), at what point should one recognize the chain of dependency to stimulate their mood? Not criticizing there, just curious.
  17. When you make the choice to follow sagacity and purity, we cannot complain about not being able to participate in the flesh, to partake joy in the bread and circuses. You sacrifice certain pleasurable aspects of societal customs to pursue another ideal. If one tries to have both the profane and pure, they end up confused-- conflicted-- or bitter.
  18. Addictions and Compulsions

No problem, hope it helps any. As for 12-step, I've heard less than good things about them. I personally attended meetings with a friend as support, and the experience does vary by the group. But they give off an odd vibe. They claim non-denominational, but their origins are heavily Christian, with western thinking patterns. "Even the most ardent true believers who will be honest about it recognize that A.A. and N.A. have at least 90% failure rates." http://www.orange-papers.org/orange-effectiveness.html You're almost better off trying self-mastery over your desires.
  19. Addictions and Compulsions

Yeah, I still craved the taste of marlboro reds-- it took a couple weeks of interchanging packs before I could master imagining the manufacturing process. They literally recycle used cigarette butts' tobacco. That was gross enough to eventually allow me to overcome the compulsion. Try American Spirit Blacks-- the perique blend has a unique flavor. I stuck with the regular pack (blues) after a while, though.
  20. Addictions and Compulsions

    (double post.)
  21. Addictions and Compulsions

I enjoyed smoking manufactured cigarettes for the past 8 years, but they certainly are terrible. If the imagery alone isn't enough, think about how they are made. The cigarette companies couldn't figure out how Marlboro was outselling them in the 70s, so they used reverse engineering to figure their out the formula: freebase chemicals. They used recycled tobacco and washed it, added ammonia and flavoring. The freebasing agents causes the addiction. This isn't anit-tobacco propaganda, I was cynical at first-- before further research. I recently switched to American Spirit tobacco-- it is natural and organic, and I already feel more healthy and yet stay relaxed from the tobacco smoke. They are still grown and distributed by RJ Reynolds, but the difference is worth getting off the chemical fix.
  22. I've been writing poetry for ten years, and I agree with the others-- it isn't empty flattery to say this is really a well-composed piece.
  23. I recall the situation when Drew was temp-banned, I'm aware he can still post, but he hasn't been by regularly in many months. I meant to say a sort of "self-imposed exile", as us seekers are prone to. It has been said he brought in meaningful conversation here, at times; which is a loss to us, now that he stays away (if only because of his own principles). Yes, there is still his blog, but he disabled its comments. We can read his monographs, but not participate in the interesting spontaneity of it all. At least GiH is still around, keeping it real, saying how it is. My comments were to bring a light to how people can be discouraged, stifled even, by overbearing leadership. A light touch, and all that.
  24. This is spiritual fascism, man. I respect the individual mods as people, but their rule has been a downer-- things seemed to get a long fine when there was one intermittent mod. Look at how Drew Hempel has been exiled, and the situation when GiH was temp-banned over a political discussion was completely unwarranted.
  25. Google ads way too invasive

Regarding FF add-ons and internet security, I suggest using "noscript" too. Download the white list and it will block google analytics, quantserve and other corporate spying programs. Although it does also block most of the web 2.0 fanciness, you can still manually allow certain scripts with ease.
