  1. Reverse breathing dangerious?

Ooo thank you for your opinion on that. Makes me feel better about not doing reverse breathing in my Xing Yi practice. There are a pair of other books by Dr. Yang Jwing ming about Taoist meditaiton particularly embryonic breathing and small circular meditation (which I do not have). The first, embryonic breathing, motivated me into studying and practicing taoist meditation that eventually lead me to this site. How do you feel about his books that are more specifically about Taoist meditation? I know he does extremely good source work.
  2. Where does violence come from?

I remember being a small child and some one stole my "lello" crayon right out of my hand and started coloring with it peacefully. I remember feeling complete rage for him being so rude and disrespectful so I curled my little fingers into a fist and clobbered that shit head right in his little button nose and retrieved my crayon and continued to color peacefully as tears rolled down his face and blood dripped from his nose. And the preschool teacher caught me and put me in the corner. I was obviously wrong, but did not feel so. And I fought back with a sense of total injustice. I was defending my property, my territory! IT WAS MY TERRITORY. NOT HIS. Why am I being punished for standing up for myself?! And I remember resisting her with every fiber of my being. She eventually gave up restraining me and I felt unstoppable with the glory of victory. And the child who stole my crayon came up to be and apologized! Because he knew, I was the alpha and you don't mess with my territory! ASK first. I remember weeks later him approaching me, "Adj will you be my friend today?" Violence comes from our evolved tendency to be territorial. I can't think of any other explanation. Territory can be stealing crayons. Territory can be stealing positions, like my chair, ect. Territory can be stealing the GLORY. If you were to teach kids that nothing truely belongs to them to remove the idea of OWNERSHIP, maybe that will solve the violence problems. But what will happen? They will grab the crayon out of another kids hand and get their little noses clobbered. We live in a world of violence and you must know how to DEAL with it and be STRONG and stand up for yourself. Otherwise, you will get pushed around. We live in a territorial world and children need to learn this early so that they don't get the snot beaten out of them. Other then that, yea, all violence comes from the sense of ownership and some one taking it from you. Taking your girlfriend. Taking your glory. Stealing your money by injustly giving you a speeding ticket for going 5 miles over the speed limit. Taking your right of way by cutting you off in thick traffic. Taking your freedom of speech and religion to the point where you would rather DIE than not have that freedom. Violence comes from the concept of onwership which is derived from our territorial nature. Resisting it is against the Dao. Embracing it through the study of Martial Arts is what will give you CONTROL over your nature and allow you to move forward. Nothing is more emotional than Violent mortal combat and rising above the emotion is a required skill of an immortal. That is one of the reasons why the daoists developed Nei Wu shu.

  5. The power of Internal Martial Arts

You're welcome. I have found that with knowledge of other MA aid in training in Xing yi specifically when used in combat because you learn to give power to regular techniques. Thats why Xing Yi is sometimes prerequisite to more complex and flexible styles such as Ba gua and Tai Chi. However Xing Yi as a whole, is brutally effective and if taught to people who are TOO passive or too YIN with their personality this will give them more balance. When I am tired or sleepy I practice about 10 minutes of this and I wake up to a high level of alertness. Bagua is great for people with thinking that is too rigid. It will open your mind! Tai Chi is used if your personality is too YANG. When your body or mind is stressed, it is too Yang, for example. If you can find one or have the money an experienced internal Chinese martial artist will teach you a specific internal style to balance out your personality.
  6. The power of Internal Martial Arts

I specialize in Xing Yi. I also practice the externals and have noticed a significant improvement to my power and speed after seriously studying and training in Xing Yi. At first its kind of useless but when you begin the two person sets, the flow fighting, then the sparing, then it all starts making sense and falling into place and really becomes a simple and brutally effective MA. IMO it is the fastest learning and most applicable Martial art available. That could be why Yui fei had his soldiers taught it and it was amazingly successful against mind boggling odds. Unfortunately it is unpopular cause it looks so boring and only has 5 techniques. (the 12 animals are just variations from the 5 elements) As you work more into the linking sets and the animal styles you begin to learn to manifest your 5 techniques differently and to handle all sorts of situations. High level Xing Yi in COMBAT looks a lot like BaGua or even sometimes Tai Chi. Often it is mistaken for other MA in combat. It can look very evasive at times depending on the opponent, especially if they are larger. It is YANG in INTENTION but not exactly yang in how the technique manifests. That is the big misconception. Xing Yi is an internal martial art and is focused on combing your will and your intention to manifest the correct action at the right time in the form of one of the five elements. or.... Xing yi is a Nei gong focused on combining your xin and your yi to create a state of wu wei which the techniques manifest in one of the five elements. Edited to add: A friend of mine is big into BJJ and he likes to goof around and try stuff with people. He grabbed me once to do something and I simply placed a finger on his throat and pushed him off of me causing him to grasp his throat and gasp for air.(this is a WATER manisfestation from the Shwan chuan technique) I then closed my left hand into a mind fist hand formation (index knuckle extended) and nailed him in the gut with very simple Xing yi strike, beng chuan. It was effortless for me, but dropped him on the floor wheezing for air in less than a second.
  7. The power of Internal Martial Arts

Ill bring a source for you in a few days. Not BJJ in particular, but the training enviornment that BJJ and other MA used in MMA usual have.
  8. The power of Internal Martial Arts

Thats okay, you can call me stupid. You talked a lot about disagreements escalating... im glad you don't do that by calling names. I used to be a bouncer, and people who train in martial arts for the wrong reasons are always the idiots causing the fights or some drunk person. Discipline, self respect, the knowledge that you COULD take care of yourself, confidence, a commanding and martial VIBE really are the key benefits to martial arts training. Self defense is important, but honestly, HONESTLY, unless you live in a violent area studying martial arts ONLY for fighting is a waste of time because you will get hit by lightning before you get into a serious life or death fight. Training martial arts that damage your body for the ONLY purpose of knowing how to fight is even worse, it is counter productive!!!!! Why would you do something that shortens your life to defend against something that will rarely happen and is VERY VERY VERY preventable? All martial arts that don't focus on cultivating chi first eventually DAMAGE the body. Imagine learning martial arts to learn self defense in order to extend your life but you actually shorten it through thousands of hours of practice in over exciting your glands and senses. We were evolved to rarely get into a fight, but to FLOOD your body with those chemicals of adrenal and so on from DAILY practice damages the organs and causes amazing stagnation all across the body as a whole. Argument on what is effective or what is not is meaningless, because fights are preventable. There are no more duels, no one is going to challenge you to a fight, everything is preventable. And fighting will just land you in jail. I-sue-you is the modern day martial arts. You are better off letting the guy punching you in the stomach, acting like it hurt and like he won, all the bouncers will throw him out, everyone will help you up and buy you drinks and then you sue him for violent assault. Call me stupid, but at least be honest.
  9. The power of Internal Martial Arts

Honestly, There is way too much focus on fighting. If anyone actually watched the video the speaker says combat is secondary. Developing CHI is primary. We are posting in this forum in the pursuit of Chi gong. We are called the TAO BUMS! Should the discussion be about CHI instead of combat? In terms of Developing CHI baguazang Xing I chuan and taichi chuan are WAY better than BJJ and silat. hehehehe And imagine how much more effective BJJ would be with INTERNAL power? Complete mental focus and concentration instead of engaging the ego which is the key motivator in most BJJ fighting, even when practicing in BJJ schools. The best fighters I know of are calm and confident and they never get into a fight cause no one messes with them, they naturally lead with the a VIBE of confidence and internal belief which traditional martial arts develops. BJJ statistically causes MORE fights because it develops the ego, not CHI. -grin- Anyway, Chi development is key, cause it produces longevity and health. In a world with GUNS, martial arts for the sake of fighting is a waste of time and energy and that effort should instead be spent developing chi. Also the internal martial arts of Tai Chi, ba gua and xing I do not damage the body and can be practiced well into old age to maintain health and vitality and you will become more effective at them as your chi cultivates. BJJ and other externals like karate you are only effective at as a youth. As you get old they become impossible because it literally damages the body and the mind. In a world of guns why would you train in something that would DAMAGE the body?!?!?! Its pointless, you are hurting yourself for no reason! Its a waste! I am a martial arts instructor and have been practicing for 15 years, I began with the externals and both my knees are messed up and now I mainly practice the internals. For my health, longevity, and vitality. -Adj
  10. What is (romantic) love?

I believe the concept of romantic love is a giant fallacy. When you are with some one you are attracted to on a core level the past and the future cease to exist and what you experience is the moment. Being in the moment is characterized as deep LOVE. But we as creatures of the mind link that the PERSON created that feeling of LOVE, but in truth it was simply being in the moment and its just one big misunderstanding. I've been heart broken, like everyone has here, enough times to realize that the sensation of heartbreak does not make sense which lead to my study of love. And honestly, I think its one big misunderstanding. Edited to add: A few years ago I woke up in the morning from a dream. It was delightful, in it there was a woman who I loved. I felt a deep core LOVE for her. It was unmistakable. And I thought, "Wow wouldn't it be great to have a girl who I can love like that." And it wasn't until later on in the day that I realized something huge.... Even though there was no one person to feel deep love towards I felt it towards that girl in my dream, unfortunately, (or fortunately) she does not exist! This means that LOVE comes from within! It has NOTHING to do with the other person. After realizing that I figured out how to live and feel in love without it being directed anywhere in particular, I could just feel it radiating within. At this time I came across something my mind was suddenly open to, "When purely in the moment you experience the sensation of love." Then it suddenly all made sense and this is why I live every day in overflowing love but do not particularly love some one directly. And when I meditate I feel an intensification of it as I sink into the present moment.
  11. When I came to these boards I was hoping for a neutral sharing on knowledge and practices for every ones personal growth and development. However, it seems to me that there are many here who uses these forms as a way to flex their, "I-am-so-wise-and-sage" muscles dropping profound statements cheaply in incorrect context like a teenager who just learned a cool new phrase. Instead of using these forums to learn and grow they use them as a vehicle to feed their ego about how much smarter they are than others instead of listening and learning and sharing. Even sometimes I see people who treat their view like a religion and PUSH their ideals down your throat with such zeal that seeking understanding is no longer possible. This is a disappointment that there could not be a forum for level headed adults without the egos and the emotion and the flaming etc... The ONLY forum that SHOULDN'T have it has it just as much as any other but a little extra punch from the religious zealots. What a disappointment. Or..... I remember as a young teenager learning of Newtons third law of motion, before I learned to be HUMBLE and LISTEN. I would talk about what I learned with such enthusiasm that I would come across as a know-it-all and I remember dropping "For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction" in almost every situation(even when out of context), kind of like many do here with other great phrases. Perhaps what I am disappointed about is a symptom of ENTHUSIASM not EGOISM? So what is this, a symptom of enthusiasm or a vehicle for the ego? Both? And how do you feel about this? I frankly feel disappointed that if some one has a question in relation to their studies they get picked apart and burnt on a steak by those with different views.
  12. The Tao Bums Know-it-Alls

Karen, Awesome point. I am glad you said this. Disappointment does happen when we have expectations. So you're right. My expectation was to learn more about what I study, more specifically feel guided and not seemingly alone in my studies. For my -only- teacher in any of this is books. To delve deeper, why do I want communicate and share ideas with others involved with what I am learning and why do I think I want it? Why? Because I am new and don't know if what I am doing is right. Why else? Make like-minded friends. Why else? Keep motivated with my studies. Why else..... learn and share.
  13. What is the Average Age of a Tao Bum

I'm surprised there are not more older people here. Whoa, really?
  14. The Tao Bums Know-it-Alls

Agreed, however when I have a question I often use the search tool and reading some of the replies, whoa! Its okay though. Just wanted to see what everyone thinks. Im not leaving, don't worry.
  15. Very well, say what you must, but certainly longevity was a science that the Daoists were particularly good at. Their history is littered with people living well over 150 years old. Early Daoists texts said, "If you live to 79 you live a long life" This was the time were sitting meditation and Chi circulation wasnt developed. As the circulation developed and became more of a science you look at the later Daoists texts and they read, "Die at 130 and you die young." I'm -sure- it has a little more direction beyond (and as well as) keeping an empty mind, sexual practices, and being a vegetarian. Maybe not in terms of enlightenment, but certainly in terms health and longevity. Yes?
  16. It seems to me the article is focused around enlightenment. But the reason I am interested in daoist practices is because of LONGEVITY, not enlightened. I believe I am already enlightened. With that said... wouldent energy circulation be beneficial in LONGEVITY to help regulate the body and maintain health? Seems to me i can sit around and meditate all day and still die young. Longevity requires a more focused and specialized effort. No?
  17. In my study of acupuncture acupressure and the martial arts it is possible to damage a person with effects that injure them in the very near future within a few seconds or a few hours no more. (maybe the next morning too) You have to hit the right spots with the right pressure at the right sequence and timing and int he right time of day. it can be used to temporarily disable limbs, slow reaction time, disorient and distract, or leave them with a little reminder on why not to mess with you next time around. Out of the five types of Chin-na, dimak seems to be exaggerated. (muscle tendon dividing, bone displacement, sealing the breath, sealing the blood, sealing the chi) Death through dimak is impossible IMO. Just some student who was poked by his teacher in a particular place that brused him real bad and the story was told over and over again exaggerated a little bit by the next person until the "mystical" dimak touch of death was thought up. Yes.... inner chamber students of many martial arts are taught it, but I am highly skeptical of its ability to kill. Unless you drug the person asleep, and rig them to die so that no one know who did what. still.... What you are describing I have seen before with certain strikes. The physics of it and the shockwaves behind it can cause damage to other places of the body other than the point of impact. This falls more into the laws of physics than anything "super natural" though.... Effects of zigzaging through the body, a strike to the chest will damage certain other parts of the body, ie: lower back, forehead and shins. effects can also radiate, initial hit there is light trauma to the surface but 30-40 seconds later an after pain deep inside. Chinese martial arts has a very rich oral tradition with very little written documents especially in its early history. Hundreds of cases of exaggeration occurs. Compare martial chi gong to religious chi gong and the advancement of it all and religious chi gong is way way more advanced, even medical chi gong is more advanced. Why can martial chi gong do all this "mystical" stuff.... exaggeration by thousands of years of story telling and not a book in sight!
  18. People dont like the new age movement cause its corny. Some of it is truely wacky and down right scary. Some i dont understand to any degree. Some seems cultish and disturbing. Honestly I like spirtuality, and exploring it from different perspectives but some of these dudes just put way too much effort into the whole thing and identify way too much with it and it just becomes really..... weird. Some I like, Tolle for instance, whos insights are very rooted in reality, not the hippy acid trips that most of the new age movement seems to come from. I bet new age comes from the trippy 'deep insights' of pot heads. ANyway!!!!!!!!!! Thats my opinion. Sorry if I offend any new agers. Or any hippies.
  19. Celibate or not

Sex is healthy. Orgasming is healthy. Ejaculation is not. When I have sex, I get renewed energy and excited about life and motivated. When I go a long period of time without it I get depressed, anxious, headaches. You need to have sex, you need to orgasm, and every once in a while you need to ejaculate. (3 or 4 times a month) Contact with another human being is key, produces chemicals that are creatable in no other way. Good luck! -Adj
  20. I have several family members who lived beyond 100 years. They lived out in the middle of nowhere in Montana. Their diet included the following. Beef Chicken Gravy mashed potatoes corn carrots beans pasta bread on occasion seasonal veggies (squash, spinach, strawberries) Montana is very cold, my mother who grew up there did not eat bananas until she came out here to the east coast. Only a few foods available yet they lived so long. My great uncle Bat lived to 104. He grew up on steak and mashed potatoes with gravy and ice cream and would drink alcohol until he would pass out at the table and fall to the floor. I think longevity has more to do with toxins. See he grew up in a time when foods werent as processed and had more nutrients and absolutely no toxins. Water came from wells, meat straight off the bones of the animals, and grains were whole and hearty. Veggies were hard to raise (drought and cold climate) but they were tasty fresh off the vine unlike the preripe crap you buy at the store. It was also a stress free and calm place to live and ultimately that old guy lived a long ass time. Therefore I think the key to longevity lies in cleansing toxins and addictions from our body(addiction to sugar and carbs from candida), listening to what our body needs and feeding it accordingly and learning to be happy and at peace. If you listen to your body and it says eat meat, then eat meat. If you listen to it and it says dont eat meat, then don't eat meat. Cravings usually are a result of a deficiency of something your body needs. Dont resist them. (unless the craving is an addiction like to fast food, or drugs, or sugar, or refined carbs) Personally I am gonna eat the way my genes are set up to eat, I look at those who lived long in my family, and follow with a few corrections to hopefully make it better. I plan to live to 130. Possible, cause understanding of family dietary history, because of chi gong practice which provides self awareness, energy, stress reduction, and because of toxin reduction with choosing my foods.
  21. Adj has come!

Hello everyone, I am Adj. I have come to all of you in my journey through my chi gong practice. I come from a background in the Chinese nei gong martial arts of Tai Chi chuan, Xing I chuan, and ba gua zang. From those martial arts I came to reading material from Dr. Yang Jwing Ming. The Root of Chinese Chi Gong, and Chi Gong Meditaiton: Embrionic Breathing. I am very happy to have stumbled upon a group who study this as well; to help keep each other motivated and excited about our Nei Dan practice. As a full time martial arts professional I hope to share some of my experiences in the internal martial arts but I am also keeping an empty cup to cultivate learning. I am looking forward to meeting many of you, and am excited about our journey, together. -Adj
