  1. the name of the book was given by Huang Yuanji 120 years ago... we can hardly argue with him about it...

    You may not be able to argue with him. But you can settle the argument for yourself by taking the course and practicing the contents and instructions diligently.

     

    Seems like an interesting couse, at a relatively inexpenive price, especially if it is the key to the Dao, contains practices, and comes with support. A weekend intensive with a qigong master is $150+, and they wont lead you all the way to the Dao in a weekend. Bill Bodri's books are not cheap, and the content is well worth it (at least How to Measure and Deepen Your Spiritual Realization ($90+) was, I havent read any others). $81 to gain unity with the Dao? Thats nothing. Sure there are resources that are free, but its important to gather knowledge from all spiritual traditions in order to compare your own and to be able to relate better to other seekers.

     

    Where Li's apprach is poor, in my opinion is in not offering a bit of the book for free, to give us a look and to substantiate the claims he makes. But the cost is really a non issue $81 or $810 even $8,100 is very little to pay for correct instructions on how to efficiently and effectivy attain untiy with the Dao. People have given their lives to accumulate, protect, and correctly dissimenate this knowlege, and we have the audacity to scoff at a price $81? Ha. (This of course assumes that these instructions are contained in the book ;)

    Almost nothing written, but many of the pictures are self-explanatory.

     

    The page on the MA roller is the most I've seen about that type of device. I initally recommended the chi roller to someone on the board a while back. Since you dont have a link on where to purchase the MA roller, that one may be handy. Also, at $20 the chi roller is probably less expensive. BTW: I am not assiociated with the chi roller in any way shape or form, just a happy user.

    If you want to find what you are best suited to do (whether or not this is your purpose) then the above resuorces will be of interest. The Myers Briggs test is a standard for finding what people have a aptitude to do. The enneagram may be useful too. There are many other enneagram resuorces out there but the one above is extremely well thought out and may be usefull to you. There are several books by those guys and they are pretty interesting.

     

    Man's Search for Meaning by Joseph Frankel would be a good read for someone in your shoes.

  4. I am so on this! It's funny, I moved through the same sequence as you, from cereal to shakes, then I did oatmeal and eggs for awhile, then yogurt and muesli and now I think the time for Congee has arrived. Great tip Turbo! Time to break out the crockpot. :)

    It took me a while to adjust to the taste when first starting to eat congee, and I found that raw honey and butter or Earth Balance natural buttery spread made it go down easier. You can also cook it with herbs to acheive medicinal effects, good stuff. Enjoy.


  5. I've never been a big fan of eating breakfast but over the last couple of years I succumbed to the research about school kids doing better with breakfast and started eating breakfast myself. All I have to show for it is a physique that's a notch less sexy than where it was. I've decided to blame my breakfast habit for this development.

     

    What ever you want to call the first meal of the day, its still breakfast as thats when you break the fast you have been on since dinner, or you evening meal. Chinese medicine recomends breakfast as well as western. The best diet I've ever heard of for weight control is this. Eat whatever you want, just not too much. However, a more sensible diet is one that is designed to maintain a stable blood sugar level. Breakfast primes your body for the rest of the day. Done correctly you can have a great start that will keep the rest of your day in balance, and keep you from overdoing it at "lunch" or your day time meal (if you dont eat a morning meal then this would be your breakfast).

     

    Anyhow, I've struggled for many years to formulate the perfect breakfast, and I'll share my experiences to save others the time. First, cereal, grew up on this, with bananas or strawberries, or other seasonal fruit. Good stuff, I guess, but as an adult I liked it less and less, besides cereal and milk can get expensive, and its messy (I'm pretty lazy about cleaning up). Next shakes, when through MetRx shakes, other protien shakes, all too messy and not filling enough, but they were quick, and possibly healthy. Next breakfast tacos! Tacos rule! They are cheap, filling, fast, and not messy at all, nearly the perfect breakfast, but they make you fat, and they are not healty. Next, skipping the morning meal, no bueno, I'm not a happy camper when hungry, this didnt last long. I was in Beijing for a few months about 2 years ago and got to eating German meusili with yogurt (yogourt over there is addative free and is more like thick milk), this was an excellent breakfast. Filling, relatively fast, healty, easy to clean up, and super cheap (more expensive to do this beakfast in the US.

     

    Then I discovered the ultimate breakfast. Congee. 5 to 6 cups of water, 1/2 cup of brown rice and 1/2 a cup of other whole grains (bran, oats, etc...) in a crock pot/slow cooker overnight. Wake up, a warm breakfast is waiting, its super healthy, filling, no morning prep time, and your spleen function is great. It does take some experimentation to get it right, but once you get it nailed then you have a perfect breakfast forever. Modern crock pots have a removable ceramic bowl that can go in the fridge so you can save the rest for the next day. Then you fill it with water, let it sit all day, and rinse it out in the evening before refilling it. Crock pot $20 Brown Rice for the month $10. Cheap breakfast. But sometimes you gotta say fuck it and get the tacos anyways.

     

    It's drifting me back to a Warrior Diet type of an existence. I think getting off caffeine has enabled me to go without eating comfortably for indefinite periods. I've been off caffeine for the last couple of months and skipping breakfast seems to be the next step.

     

    The "Potatoes not Prozac" book that Sean likes, has a nice breakdown of how blood sugar levels affect many people and my experience has been that having a solid meal of whole grain, slow digesting food is the key to day of beneficial food consumption.

     

    Also in Pitchfords "Healing With Whole Foods" there is a nice breakdown of what additions can be made to congee to have specific effects.

  7. Was it S.Biel who made some posts about what to eat pre and post-ejac? I remember a series of posts on the HT board about that. It included some kind of yeast, meats and other specific foods. Anyone have this info around?

     

    Cool list. Chia deserves top rank b/c he attracted so many, for me it was seeing "Taoist Secrets of Love: Cultivating Male Sexual Energy" in a martial arts shop and saying "Cool, Chinese sex secrets!". And I'm sure many others had similar experiences.

     

    Fits in well with all of the year end top 10 lists everyone is making.


  8. good stuff, could really feel the salt scrubbing away.

     

    pickling/canning salt would be best as it contains no "anticaking" chemicals, the sea salt i just used contains sodium carbonate as an anticaking agent. these neti people(health and yoga) recommend using the canning salt through your nose.

     

    also, i used jojoba oil just now...good stuff. out of all the natural oils it most closely resembles the chemical structure of human sebum (natural body oil). its also great for the hair, cures dry scalp and related dandruff, while keeping your hair in one place. dunno how it would work out for long hair tho.

  9. Its fun to look around there. You could spend a few lifetimes investigating all those avenues, and by then it would be out of date.

     

    He can be pretty brutal. Jesus gets a "...but benefit of doubt". But realistic too. Lots of interesting stuff here, shows the diversity available to seekers.

     

    Didn't see Bodri on it, however his favorite teacher Nan Huai-Chin gets a mention under Zen. Sorry Yoda, looks like Adyashanti got the highest rank. Chosing a name starting with A was a good choice as it puts him first in the alphabetical list of great masters/gurus/teachers.


  10. I found a link to the guru rating service and looked up Yogani, and found this exchange. In which Yogani gives a some info and perspective not found in his lessons. I especially liked the bit about how he is creating an interactive textbook. Sometimes when you read things like that it make you feel like you really are in the 21st century, or perhaps a sci-fi book (anyone read Diamond Age?).

     

    Anyhow, though this might be of interest to fellow AYPers.

    After doing a class, i feel for the rest of the day surprisingly 'cool'

     

    I mean in the class we are literally cooking from the heat and exertion, but afterwards... espeacially if i have stayed in the corpse pose for a good 5 minutes+ after the class...... later on i feel very temperate - not too hot nor cold.

     

    On a different note, more girls attend than guys. And the girls are definitely more flexible than us ;)

    I found this site, which talks about prayer wheels, then goes on to say that if you save the image with on your hard drive, you can turn it into a prayer wheel.

    Clever idea, and it may work (hey the Dhali Lama says it does), I suppose that it depends on your intent, as with everything else. However, the author ignores the fact that the data in a file is frequently stored in small, diconnected pieces all over the hard drive, which is analagous to scattering pieces of the prayer wheel all over the Earth and calling it a big prayer wheel. Smaller files are less likely to be scattered though, and the filename should remain complete, so there is a good chace that you may in fact get the benefit of a prayer wheel in your house err computer err harddrive. Especially good if you put the filename om-mani-padma-hum in every directory on your computer (oh the tedieum)

  14. Funny what you said I was watching george carlin on Bill Maher's show on HBO last night and he was saying that humans are like the disease of planet Earth we have caused more destruction and pain on this planet then any other creature.

    While its easy to compare people to disease, and it seems somewhat accurate. its is only superfically correct. People have the ability to make the world a better place. To improve it heal it, to cure the earth's and humaity's "disease". And thats no small task.

     

    Saying that people are a disease keeps us from taking responsibilty for our actions or at least owning up to the fact that it is our concious decisions that have created what we percieve as the effects of disease.

     

    More and more powerful hurricanes, polar ice caps receding to unprecedent levels, holes in the ozone larger than ever, widlife being destroyed for no substantial purpose, people acting from a desire to make a buck today without caring about tomorrow. Lack of social responsibility if you will. Its easy to call it a disease, but they are all decisions, we (the people of Earth) have chosen these things, continue to, and will only stop, it seems, when forced to do so. Mother Nature appears to be in the process of forcing us to stop.

     

    Hold on, its going to be a turbulent ride!!

    Humans.

     

    People scare the everliving shit outta me. Sharks are one of the most beautifal creature on or in the planet. Sleek, fast killing machines, nothing wasted, in fact if they stop swimming they drown. Has to keep going, keep eating, magnificent. Its consumption feeds other fish, some live on it, some feed on the scraps. The varieties of sharks are incredible. Did you know that a maco shark can do sprints of over 55 mph? Its teeth are curved inward, so once it gets a piece of its preys ass it hold it. Tiger sharks are nearly as stout as a GW and inhabit waters along the Gulf of Mexico. A friend of mine caught a 12 foot one a year ago. They have been caught sa big as 16 to 18 feet weighting 1500+ pounds. Bull sharks have been know to swim miles up fresh water rivers to hunt. Amazing creatures, pinacle of aquatic evolution. Beauty.

     

    People on the other hand, and especially Asians, harvest shark fins for soup. They net hundreds of sharks bring them aboard their fishng vessels, cut off the dorsal fin, and throw the shark back in the water to die. It almoast makes me cry when I see video of it. Its like someone cutting off your arms and leaving you to die. People destroying natures most efficient and beautifal creature, that scares me more than the shark and it astounds me that so little has been done about it. Science has already noted the repercussions in the ecosystem. Ever wonder why every city that is expanding is having problems with deer? Its beacuse we killed all the large cats off years ago, same thing is happening with sharks.

    start with a beginners model, not the modded pro edition (save it for later). dont expect anything the first ten times you try it. i nearly gave up on it, but it works. its really quite amazing.

     

    have you tried more lube? if your tearing/irritating the lining of your colon, then you must be using an awful lot of pressure, slow down, _relax_, be gentle, try a different angle.

     

    the reviews and experiences on the aneros website are quite informative as to how other folks have gotten it to work.
