  1. To the OP: It sounds as if the development of telepathic skills is what really interests you more than the qigong. Instead of practicing qigong and hoping for a possible side effect, why not train directly in telepathy? There are many training programs available for learning this (both in-person and online), as well as related skills such as clairvoyance, trance mediumship, and remote viewing.

  2. One of the first books that I read this subject (almost 40 years ago) was Buddhism: A Way of Life and Thought by Nancy Wilson Ross. As I recall, it provided a good general overview including coverage of Buddha's life story and sections on three major schools: Theravada, Tibetan and Zen. It might fall short regarding the critical aspects that you're looking for though (it's been a long time since I read it).

A book that I liked a lot from the perspective of a modern Western practitioner was Stumbling Toward Enlightenment by Geri Larkin.

  3. Tsa Lung and Tummo

    with Chaphur Rinpoche

       January 18th & 19th 10 AM – 4:30 PM

The Bönpo tradition of the Mother Tantra contains six classes, or paths, through which one can swiftly attain enlightenment. The first of these, called Thap Lam Cher, can  be roughly translated as taking the path to enlightenment. Perhaps it was given this name as it contains the majority of the practices that focus on the channels, winds, and tigles: mainly Tummo and Tsa Lung.

Join us on the weekend of January 18th -19th  as Chaphur Rinpoche gives teachings on the theory and practice of Thap Lam Cher. These teachings will cover the basic theory of the nine lung or winds which range from the most coarse winds of delusion to the wind that underlies the subtlest mind of the natural state.

Concurrent with these teachings on theory, Chaphur Rinpoche will lead students in the practices of Tsa Lung and Tummo, taught to gain mastery over the nine lung and cause the cessation of the coarser winds of samsara. Thus, the deluded mind is purified and the practitioner is led to enlightenment.

This retreat is open to students that have any level of familiarity with the Bön teachings. All are warmly invited to attend and to savor the experience of Tsa Lung and Tummo practice with the support of sangha.  Please click  HERE to register for in person and for Zoom.

  4. Just as an FYI, they are shipping the book now. The shipping options were $14.00 for standard shipping or $14.65 for priority. I selected the priority and it arrived in two days.

I haven't delved deeply into the book yet, but will say that it is very information dense. There are a lot of illustrations, but they are small and there is a lot more text than pictures. Some illustrations are color photographs and some are line drawings.

Johnson mentions Feng Zhiqiang and another teacher (whose name I forget) as being his primary influences regarding the Taiji ruler. I don't have the book with me right now to check. He also goes into things like the two-person longer ruler and the wooden ball on a small round table exercises. The only other place I have seen these things mentioned before was at Ken Cohen's ruler workshop.

The book was quite expensive (for me) but I feel that it was a worthwhile purchase.

  5. This sounds interesting:

In January 2020, Dr. Johnson will begin teaching an exciting new 8 month energy cultivation course – which will include the mystical teachings that accompany the seven secret stages of Daoist Master Chen Tuan’s Taiji Zhi (Tai Chi Ruler) system.

It will take place at his studio in Monterey, CA. I won't be attending, but ordered the book. Maybe it will be recorded and offered online sometime later.

  6. Just wanted to point out that Johnson seems to be teaching his Christian material separately from his Daoist and qigong material and not conflating them:

Also, sutras discovered at Dunhuang in the early 1900s indicate that some Daoists were trying to incorporate Yeshua into Daoism as far back as around 600 AD:

  7. I don't own any of these, so can't comment on their effectiveness:

Daoist Sleeping Meditation: Chen Tuan's Sleeping Gong

    Daoist Dream Practice Audio CD

    Eight Pieces of Brocade/Sleeping Qigong

It's not specifically for sleep, but I've noticed that the times in the past when I've practiced Pangu Shengong at night, the quality of my sleep seemed much improved, sometimes sleeping straight through the night and waking up feeling refreshed. I should start doing that again! Also, not qigong, but yoga nidra is said to produce effects equivalent to deep sleep in a short period of time. It's certainly very relaxing in any case.

  8. I've learned a number of variations of the Ba Duan Jin over the years (from both live instructors and media), but my favorite one is shown in the book The Way of Energy by Master Lam Kam Chuen. A DVD of this version is also available from Shifu Susan Matthews. It has a movement that begins in a tree hugging posture, then the upper body turns towards the side and the hands rise and palms rotate out. This is repeated on alternating sides. The first time I did this, I felt energy rushing into my thoracic spine area. It really opened something up for me. As Earl notes above, the other versions I learned were all pretty good also.

  9. On 7/20/2019 at 1:04 PM, freeform said:

Yi Jin Jing principles are everywhere in the internal arts... it’s what makes these arts internal... The real stuff is all rather secretive. It’s also very powerful and can be dangerous. It’s not in any book or video (at least not fully).

I seem to remember that there was a Chinese teacher (not R. Peng) who taught expensive Yi Jin Jing seminars on the west coast a number of years back. He did the electric shock stuff and was popular among the Mopai "special powers" crowd. I believe that he suddenly dropped dead at a fairly young age. Does anyone else remember this? Freeforms comment about it being dangerous brought this to mind.

  10. I do believe that it is the Amitabha Buddha and not Kuan Yin that "created" the Pure Land.

A number of the Chinese sects seem to do Pure Land chanting (Amituofo) as well as Chan meditation. The Japanese seem to have separated them out after Nichiren (1200s), and as Starjumper mentions above, a lot of the Japanese sects are indeed hardcore fundamentalists.
