Here is a paragraph from that page: "An ancient Chinese proverb says 'Do this exercise five hundred times each day & you will be healthy for a long life. Do this exercise a thousand times each day & you will live forever.'"

I wonder if you start this later in life, like age 60. Would you still live forever? Or at least a long time? Is it ever too late to start qigong?

Personally I'm pretty skeptical about the possibility achieving of physical immortality. However, I do think that this exercise (and many other qigong methods) could benefit the immune system, thus leading to a longer and more healthy life.

I don't think that it's ever too late to start. There is such a wide range of practices that there is probably something for everyone, no matter what their age and current condition is.

Xingyi, means form (body) and mind. Quan, means fist and designates a martial art system. Xingyi unifies the body and mind. It is based on the Five Phases (Wuxing), the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Practicing Xingyiquan cultivates the energy of the lungs, kidneys, liver, heart, and spleen; balances the emotions; builds a powerful body; and unifies the mind. Xingyiquan is particularly allied to Standing Meditation (Zhanzhuang,) and we’ll study how that builds internal energy and strong concentration.

    Keksel Retreat

    With Chaphur Rinpoche
    In Person and On Zoom
    9 am-12 pm Pacific Time
    August 25-27

We at Gyalshen Institute are excited to announce our  upcoming Keksel Retreat that will be taught by Chaphur Rinpoche.

About the Practice: What is Keksel?

Keksel is a general Tibetan term that describes any practice involving the subtle channels, winds and drops or “tigles. ” These three are used in a spiritual context to give the practitioner an experience of the enlightened body, speech and mind. In addition, keksel is also practiced for its numerous health benefits.

Tibetan medical theory posits that our body and consciousness is composed of five elements (earth, water, fire, wind and space). These five are expressed within us through the interconnection of our flesh, blood, heat, breath, and consciousness. They are connected to the five organs: liver, kidneys, spleen, lungs, and heart. Those organs are in turn, connected to the five negative emotions:  attachment, jealousy, ignorance, pride, and anger.

However, the five negative emotions can be transformed into the five wisdoms: emptiness, mirror-like wisdom, the wisdom of equality, discriminating wisdom, and all accomplishing wisdom. The transformation of the five negative emotions into the five wisdoms is the basis of spiritual practice. Keksel provides a powerful method to transform the five poisons into the five wisdoms, and thus attain liberation. However, through its activity of harmonizing the elements within the body, keksel practice can also have a profound effect on the health of the practitioner.

    Teaching Lineage

Both the tsa lung and trulkhor practices from the Bönpo tantric and dzogchen traditions are types of keksel. This course incorporates movements and practices from both of these traditions as well as the recitation of mantra. This teaching will incorporate all three of these traditions.

When describing the reason for the synthesis of these separate traditions, Chaphur Rinpoche writes,

“In ancient times, those Bön practitioners who emphasized Keksel practice, lived long and healthy lives and attained lasting peace through the realization of their mind’s nature.  In modern societies and especially in the West, life is fast paced and cerebral. This creates a mind and body disconnect which leads to further emotional and physical imbalances and problems in interpersonal relationships.  I believe that the Keksel teachings are well suited to address these issues. My desire is to distill the essential points of these teachings into one system that is even more effectively tailored to the Western mind.”

Also,  the lessons will be recorded and daily sessions will be available afterward.

We are looking forward to seeing you in person or online!

This talk will introduce the teachings of Master Hu Yaozhen (1887-1973), a medical qigong doctor and teacher. His qigong was characterized by Stillness in Movement and Movement in Stillness. His primary teachings centered on ‘Keeping the Mind On’ practices. These are quiescent practices that are equivalent to our modern mindfulness practices.Kevin will provide several definitions of mindfulness meditation and descriptions of different kinds of mindfulness practices: mindfulness of breathing, physical movement, and qi/energy movement.

Master Hu’s mindfulness practices focus on the dantians. Kevin will compare the modern locations with the locations that Master Hu identified. Master Hu also applied quiescent or deep relaxation practices which we will explore. Finally,we will explore Master Hu’s three mindfulness practices: Mindfulness of the Middle Dantian, the Mingmen, and the Lower Dantian. If time allows, we will practice Master Hu’s Mindfulness of the Middle Dantian technique.

To make old Chinese books on Qigong and Taiji available in English, Kevin collaborates with a translator. He is presently working on Master Dai Yetao’s 5 Animal Frolics and preparing to begin teaching them. Kevin has already written one book on Master Jiao’s 5 Animal Frolics Qigong and is writing a second one on Master Jiao’s 15 Taiji Movement Qigong.

In recent years, Kevin has been studying with Dr. Henry McCann, an acupuncturist in New Jersey. Dr. McCann is a 12th generation lineage holding disciple of Chen Style Taijiquan, a 3rd generation lineage disciple of Hunyuan Chen Style Taijiquan and a disciple of a Qigong lineage transmitted by Hu Yaozhen that originated with the Daoist Immortal Chen Tuan.  Dr. McCann has worked with Kevin to revive the qigong forms and teachings that he has had translated. Now, with several texts translated, Kevin finds it very exciting to realize that there is so much more to learn and practice. Qigong and Taijiquan are arts that one can practice for a lifetime and always discover something new about oneself and the outer world.

Since 2018, Kevin teaches at several locations in Bethlehem PA in person and via Zoom

This weekend  Chaphur Rinpoche continues the  precious teaching of Shardza’s Heart Drops of Kuntu Zangpo by  focusing on the  Trekchod teachings.  The Heart Drops of Kuntu Zangpo presents Dzogchen teachings very directly for those of sharp faculties. In this section on Trekchod, Shardza begins with practice instructions on Dawa Gyaltsen’s five-fold meditation. Beginners will find this a very easy way to approach Dzogchen, and those already familiar with the five-fold meditation will surely enjoy Shardza’s presentation.  Shardza then  continues his instructions with a series of  powerful, direct introductions on the view, meditation, conduct, and result of Dzogchen.

The focus of this weekend’s  Trekchod teachings from the Heartdrops of Dharmakaya will be very practice oriented. We will begin with a gradual approach to arriving at the nature of our mind using Dawa Gyaltsen’s  five-fold meditation.  We will then continue with a series of direct introductions on cutting through to the nature of mind.  In the final session of the weekend, we will conclude with teachings on gaining confidence with regard to  experiencing the nature of mind and integrating it into one’s daily  life. You are warmly and enthusiastically invited to join us in this important practice oriented weekend.

Please register below by May 25th to receive the handout.

Rushan literally means separation, specifically the separation between Samsara and Nirvana.  During this first section of Heart Drops Of Kuntu Zangpo, Rinpoche will give an introduction to Samsara and Nirvana through explanations of  the differences among each of the 6 realms (the Hell, Hungry Ghost, Animal, Human, DemiGod and God realms) with more emphasis on the Human Realm.

A transmission of each part of this complete, unbroken lineage teaching of the Heart Drops of Kuntu Zangpo will be given to each student on the designated weekend.

  12. There are some versions of Yi Jin Jing which use relatively little external movement and consist of sequences of tightening and releasing different muscle groups by doing things like pressing the palms down, spreading the fingers apart, tightening the fists with the thumb inside the other fingers, and so forth. You may also be engaging the core and perineum (and coordinating the breath) with the "flexing" while doing this. One of these is shown in Dr. Yang Jwing Ming's early book Qigong for Health and Martial Arts. Another, called Sinew Metamorphosis  is taught by Sifu Anthony Korahais in his Qigong 201 course (probably learned from GM Wong Kiew Kit).

  13. Phowa Retreat

    Transference of Consciousness (Phowa)

    With Chaphur Rinpoche

    In Person and on Zoom

    March 3rd – 5th,  9am-12pm (PT) and 6pm to 9pm Central European Time (CET)

In response to the  request of many students, Chaphur Rinpoche has generously agreed to give instructions on the practice of Phowa, or Transference of Consciousness. The  ultimate benefit of this practice is to steady the practitioner’s mind at the time of one’s  own death and to clear any obstacles that would prevent consciousness from rising freely into the enlightened state. In the Bön tradition, for over 18,000 years,  Phowa has been performed by empowered  lamas for practitioners at the time of death to  support the transfer of consciousness to the enlightened state.  Today, the  practice is being taught to  practitioners, not only for their own benefit, but  to encourage them to  develop the focused practice and intention, that can assist others to attain enlightenment in the dying process. To be effective, one must first receive transmission which Rinpoche will give to those who are attending this retreat. Then, when combined with focused practice and intention, whether performed by a Lama or a practitioner,  Phowa can become  an expression of Supreme Bodhicitta.

Join Chaphur Rinpoche for this special event. The number of in person participants is limited. Advance registration by March 1st is required.

    LOCATION:

    1608 Bonita Road,San Pablo, CA 94806

  16. Tsa Lung Trul Khor Yoga | Teaching and Transmission

with Tempa Dukte Lama & Geshe Chembel Gurung

    Saturday, October 22nd – Sunday, October 23rd, 2022

    from 9:30am – 1:00pm EST

via Zoom & In-Person at Olmo Ling Bon Center

Simultaneous Translation will be available in French & Spanish online! Please check back for more updates!

    TempaLama_GesheChhembel-3.jpg?1598873452

Tsa Lung Trul Khor is ancient Tibetan Bon Yoga. It is a contemplative practice that employs breathing, physical movement, vocal sound, visualization, and deep meditative awareness as a path of harmonizing the body, mind, and energy, and attaining awakening. Among the cycle of Bon Trul Khor teachings, the Tsa Lung practices are regarded as particularly accessible while also powerful and beneficial. These practices are simple and gentle and do not require a lot of flexibility. No familiarity with Trul Khor or yoga is required.

Tempa Dukte Lama and Geshe Chembel Gurung will explain how imbalances in the five elements cause agitation in the five winds, five internal organs, five senses and corresponding external limbs. Due to these imbalances and agitation, our health becomes vulnerable. The lamas will demonstrate and give detailed instructions on a set of simple and highly effective Tsa Lung Thrul Khor exercises of body, speech, and mind. They will explain how we can use these practices to balance and clear the agitation caused by the imbalances of the five elements.

  17. The beginning of a qigong session is usually more quiescent as you mindfully adjust the breath, posture, and mind to enter into a relaxed state. This is part of what distinguishes qigong from just doing basic exercise. That said, some qigong methods that I find quite heating are Yi Jin Jing, Five Animal Frolics, and Swimming Dragon Qigong. Since you are aware of Ayurveda, you probably know the yogic Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar), a classic method for generating body heat. You can find YouTube videos of all of these.
