I like this book. He would’ve been a very good cultivator - unfortunately he got taken in by competition which won’t allow him to go deep.

His approaches in that book are similar to some of the best internal arts masters I’ve come across... but again he uses competition as his benchmark of truth... cultivators use something else.

Do u recommend his book? By the way, did u also read robert green book about mastery? I wanted to read it but never did

  2. so everything was just in the mind of Herrigel? hahaha I am not even surprised honestly, but it is very funny. The difference between what the master said and what this german understood must had been huge. I wonder how many deluded westerners, included Herrigel, there have been.

I think MMA did a lot to peel away the mythos and bs of supposed "deep stuff" and showed the mechanics of fighting are rather straight forward.

Thanks to mma scammers have it a little more difficult to sell their "magic secret techniques" from some hidden chinese mountain. But there are always deluded people eager to fall in whatever big promise

The active nostril changes throughout the day. Normally one nostril is going to be “more open” than the other depending on the time of the day, corresponding to the yin/yang cycle.

The idea is to not have one nostril permanently blocked. Doing NS will balance the energies out in the body.

Do u think it is a good exercise to improve breathing? My left nostril is clearly more blocked than the right

Amazing. Last time I tried to breathe through one nostril or the other, I could not. Hadn't even looked into it until today.

Beginner stuff indeed.   Thanks for the timely tip!

honestly i can't do it neither, there is always one nostril not working!! :D

Why is it? I should fix that

  6. A book everybody should read: gulag archiielago. It is the history of prisons, forced labor and the totalitarian law system in the former soviet union, from the perspective of an innocent man who spent many years of his life there. It is not a novel, it is real history. Everybody should know what happened there

There is a sequence of 4 exercises used in various QiGong circles and Vajrayana sects intended for exactly this.

The first exercise is as follows. Grab each arm around the forearms, creating a sort of rectangle with your chest and arms. Breathe in through the chest, expanding the diaphragm and the front of the ribs, slowly raising your linked arms above your head. Keep going and slightly apply pressure downwards, feel the back portion of the diaphragm sink, and the front portion rising up and stretching. Breathe out and slowly lower your arms back down, keeping them connecting. Switch the arms and repeat. This begins the proper diaphragmatic movement.

Second exercise, place your hands on your side near the base of your ribs, elbows pointing to the side. Do the same breathing, expanding up in the front, sinking down in the back. But this time more focus to expanding on the side of the chest pressing against your hands. Feeling the back sink down.

Third exercise, same as first exercise but when you stretch your arms above your head you unlink them at the top and continue to stretch further up going in to the first exercise posture of Ba Duan Jin but with linked hands. do the same breathing this time at the top focusing on expanding and breathing into the upper portion of the chest.

Final exercise is essentially spreading your arms out to the side while breathing in and pushing them out in front of you while exhaling. This is done with palms down first then palms up. But if done properly after the previous exercises the entire chest should be expanding and moving freely and you should feel as if your arms are being pushed apart to the side when you breathe in and pulled in like a spring when you breathe out. Feels like you aren't moving your arms yourself. The Qi is.

If you have any questions I can record a video or something. Very similar to various "Power Breathing" methods taught.

    Enjoy,

Could you record it in a video please? I am not sure how to do it. Thnks!

Not exactly the same but achieve the same function and have many shared similarities. Even Xing Shen Zhuang itself is a little varied from lineage to lineage. If you have access to Zhi Neng Second method then that would work great for posture purposes. The trick with these exercises though is to relax into it and know where your rotation axis is. Each movement has a different rotational axis in your body the movements are centered on. It is not simply a movement. You need to feel things rotating from that axis and learn to guide the mind to those points.

Thanks i am interested in that form as i read it works the spine too. Do u know where could i learn it? Dvds, seminars, youtube? Thanks again

The best posture specific QiGong I know if is called Xing Shen Zhuang. It is a QiGong that goes through and works on specific sections of the spine. That combined with fundamental TaiJi poses is going to be the ultimate posture training. Seriously pick up a book or video on the fundamentals of TaiJiQuan (I would suggest Chen's style) and practice the standing poses for a good amount of time.

    Cheers,

  10. After many years trying to internally (and externally) cultivate myself, I have come to the conclusion that good posture is essential for health and well being. The problem is that today we tend to develop bad posture as we spend a lot of time sitting in a desk playing with technological dives or driving.

What are some good qigong styles to cultivate proper bodily posture? In my opinion ba duan jin is pretty good for this, especially the first exercise, lifting the sky, but I would like to know other good styles. Also zhan zhuang is good but too difficult for me unfortunately.

Check out neurokinetic therapy to better understand the connections in your body that are creating these issues with your pelvis. Likely related to your jaw or feet imbalancing your system. There are other systems and explanations along the same lines of course, but this one seems good with explaining things.

In my opinion a lot of the common types of advice for these issues on this board and in alternative circles will fail to solve the fundamental balance that post modern people have biomechanically and otherwise. Its not because certain ancient systems are inherently bad advice or tactics, its just that they could not have anticipated that in the 20th century we would be at the peak of an evolutionary problem with our faces and jaws. We are in the midst of a black swan event that has been coalescing very very slowly and silently since the dawning of the agrarian age. 20th century life has pushed things past the precipice and many people are suffering as a result unknowningly.

Interesting. And what do u think is the problem with the jaw today ?

Correct posture originates from the pelvis and has very little to do with strong back. Any book on body mechanics will teach you that. Read Moshe Feldenkaris where he discusses it.

    Where does he discuss that?
