It partially shows the way in which this kind of experience can really mess up a person (the torturer itself). It shows the level of bullshit that is being generated by torture. And bullshit is the technical term, (as used by Harry G. Frankfurt) of something that is unrelated with the truth. And it explains the kind of mess a soldier might find himself in, in which it becomes hard to find out exactly what is moral, what is ethichal and what is the law.
