  1. Riding the Ox

"Searching for an ox while riding an ox.." Means while already walking the path and utilizing its methods, one doesn't see the fruits of their practice just yet, and so, frustrated, looking outside for the path. Basically, looking for the goodies when the cultivator isn't ready to taste them yet. "being mounted on an ox unable to dismount" This one points to the cultivator not able to put down their methods when it is time to do so. Usually, cultivators become so attached to their methods, that they can not go any further due to that attachment. When the time comes that the gradual practice begins to gain momentum for a sudden realization, sometimes the cultivator feels too attached to let go, change, their practice. Sudden realization is because of gradual practice over so many lifetimes. Gradual practice is because there isn't enough nourishment in the mind ground for the realization to be "brought forth" Both Sudden and Gradual themselves are simply illusions. It is simply the conditions in the mind of the cultivator which decide how that cultivator will proceed. Yet, it is the cultivator who is only able to see that which is gradual and or realize the sudden. All according ot the conditions of the mind.
  2. In Taoism what reconciles yin and yang?

Yin and Yang itself are relative to each other. People are both Yin and Yang. "Harmonization" of the two is not needed because the two are only relative; they exist because of the conditions of separation. The underlying truth of Yin and Yang is that because there is an attachment to there being one and the other, there will be a view of needing a balance. Harmony is when neither Yin or Yang are relative to the mind. No view of separation and non-separation. In terms of cultivation, it is all relative. Too much muscular development in Breath training, leads to an imbalance of the organ systems; in turn deteriorating the the body physically, and causing deficiency internally. To "harmonize" the "internal and external", just cultivating energy through standing, moving, sitting and lying isn't enough. Proper diet must be adhered to, along with a strong/controlled mind, mindfulness of habits, thoughts, actions, speech. Then, once this basic stage is somewhat settled in, and becomes a natural "doing", energy practices will have a more...profound effect, not to mention actually hold merit in maintaining an "inner balance" in the body, out of the body, and in mind. If the diet is terrible, the mind will not be stable, and thus can not cultivate to its "better" potential. So if you want to have a "trinity" within Daoist cultivation that "harmonizes" Yin and Yang, relatively, then; Mind + Body + Diet. Each one will have its several stages in which one will utilize in order to reach a stable, strong and wise foundation so they can go further without slacking off, or being pulled by the mind's ...winds. ***Adding this: Also, the Mind, Body, Diet is only one aspect...foundational, and still on the superficial level. but without it, any "attainment" is temporary.
  3. Enlightenment before being born means before you were ever "born", whether from an egg, a womb, dampness, etc. It was the very first time you received any type of form and discriminative consciousness. It doesn't mean before you were born into this life. Emptiness and enlightenment... both don't even exists, nor not exist. When the concepts are finished being used to guide the concentration, then they must be put down. Enlightenment to exist, means that it can be produced, and then destroyed. Attainment also isn't true; just for the sake of saying true and a false. Realization would be a better word. There is the 1 and there is the 0. Both are constructs to point to both Interdependence and Emptiness. Stick to Interdependence, the 1. Its safer to do so , only because the "idea" of Emptiness, the 0, causes one to think that whatever they do, doesn't matter at all, and that there is annihilation of things. In truth, just because the Yin and Yang of reality, only the relative reality, tells us so, everything will manifest everything...every cause makes an outcome and every outcome is a cause. No matter how many times qi runs up the spine, and no matter how clear and bright eyed you feel/become, you still will have to deal with the outcomes of past causes. To actually eradicate the "bad" karma, is to simply do the opposite of it...plant good causes by doing good things. That could mean doing a variety of practices, but simply practicing Qigong will not do it. Adjustment of one's views, habits and speech will.
  4. 'New' Enlightened Master On The Scene?

hehe Vishnu is a transformation of Shakyamuni Buddha, and vice verse... Why can't they be? :-) The Jade Emperor... Nice man. Krishna is Narayana, is The god of Medicine, is Medicine Buddha. :-) Which one is older? all of them, because they are transformations of the same being. Manjushri Bodhisattva is Universal Worthy Bodhisattva, is Earth Store Bodhisattva. All transformation bodies of Manjushri. The Buddha... became a Buddha many moons before he appeared in our world. Being a Buddha, he has completely attained the 5 Eyes and Six penetrations, that which The Jade Emperor, a.k.a. Shakra Indra, has not attained. Be it so, both have been around for ages before appearing in our world. Yet, just for giggles, The Jade Emperor, when he listens to the Buddha speak Dharma in the Heavens, he doesn't sit down. he isn't in the position to be able to sit down; or you can say, he doesn't have the right conditions yet. Maybe the Jade Emperor is a transformation of the Buddha, or vice, verse. It can be that the Jade Emperor helped Shakyamuni along the way.. and why? Because all are cultivators of the true wisdom path...depends if your eating flesh and causing disasters just for fun.. lol But the Jade Emperor didn't "bestow" anything on the Buddha to allow him to attain pure and complete wisdom, "Enlightenment" If so, every Buddha and Bodhisattva would be doing that to every one. Because the Buddha attain complete enlightenment, he "attained" the 5 eyes and 6 spiritual penetrations. No one can give it to you. and if they do, it will not last...only temporary.
  5. hahaha ... unobtanium

  9. Some critical issues in Zen Buddhism

:-) The interdependence of all things: Equanimity. Neither stopping the mind, nor stilling the thoughts. Neither entertaining our mind and producing more thoughts. Neither eradicating thoughts, and shattering the mind. Neither finding the neither and the nor in any of "our". Stilling the mind through concentrating on one thought, just to build up concentration ability/strength. Everything else, during the process, are as though they never were there. Not needing our attention, they neither increase, nor diminish.

  14. Hi There! That is the member "Song Yong Dao" who mentioned that. Peace.
  15. What is your definition of "Western Daoism"?

An absolute waste of my time... have fun every body.
  16. What is your definition of "Western Daoism"?

Daoism is just a name, firstly. People are too attached to this notion that the "Way" is some non-changing ever present substance. Actually, the Way exists because of the views people have. If this "way" that is supposed to be Daoism didn't need to compromise, then every westerner who chooses to follow it should then adhere to the culture mannerisms of Chinese Daoism, if that be the "Dao" followed, and take vows for practice, read and study the scriptures, cultivate oneself in meditation, vows and service, adopt the clothing of Chinese Daoist culture, read up on Chinese history, learn Chinese, traditional and simplified, and have next to no possessions what so ever. Not every one can do this, therefore it isn't right for everyone to try it that way. When a method of practice (Way) enters a new land, it must conform to the culture of that land in order for the people to be able to recognize it, accept it and practice it. Then the people can investigate the history of that method, and finally incorporate those cultural mannerisms that make sense to them...not just take it for what they see and are told. Another thing that needs to be compromised on the west's side, is all these nonsense books on Daoism. Drop them all, and take Chinese Daoist scriptures and their commentaries, translate them, and read them, propagate proper Daoism...for free. That also doesn't mean go and teach Qigong to any one who wants it either. Nor does it mean that one can charge for Qigong just because some people do, and claim to be immortals... Truthfully, a great big handful of most Qigong systems in the west have only superficial functions. Not every Daoist pratices martial arts, not every Daoist cultivates Qigong in the way most people in the west assume. Many Daoists recite scriptures, do services for the community and live a life of enough. Want real Daoism? ... in the words of Master Zheng Man Qing when talking about Taiji Quan, "Invest in loss". Peace, Lin
  17. What is your definition of "Western Daoism"?

I see posts talking about Journey to the West, but does anyone know what the Journey to the West was about? Or did they take the video series at face value, and just soak up the "Daoist Magic" they saw, and believe Buddhism to be weak and without application...? Regardless, the kind of babbling about this and that will not get the job done. Just simply do not rely on a few people to do the work, integrate it into your life. When the west presents statues and architecture, and daily lifestyle in he mannerisms of Daoism of China, and viceverse, then one can say Daoism has anchored itself in the west.
  18. Who Teaches Martial Arts?

Greetings, I teach Buddhist and Daoist internal cultivation, Taiji Quan, Yong Chun Quan.
  19. What is your definition of "Western Daoism"?

"West" signifies the direction in which the people of that direction live. "Daoism" signifies the practices of philosophy, energy cultivation and attaining rebirth in the heavens. "Western Daoism" would signify the people of the western direction cultivating the practices within Dao as it is from China. What needs to be done is simple to address, difficult to apply; To take Daoism of China and place it to the western people, both western culture and Daoist culture will have to compromise a few things such as : Culture and cultural application, personal views, acceptance of a moral/virtue/ethical guideline, and the assimilation of Daoist cultural views to western cultural views while maintaining the foundation of history and culture of Daoist education and practice. Some things will be pushed aside, while other things will be more prevalent. What should be the focus while doing so is the development of a guideline of principles for the Western Daoist cultivator to apply him//herself to. One can not just take a cultural practice and place it in another country without changes on both ends. Success for any type of project with this is dependent on one question: "How much is the cultivator willing to give up?" Peace and Blessings. Lin
  20. Lama Dorje Number Two

I don't know, I don't follow his practice or any of his ideas. lol Peace, Lin
  21. What makes Buddhism different?

Taken from "Buddhism A to Z" compiled by ROn Epstein published by the Buddhist Text Translation Society: http://online.sfsu.edu/~rone/Buddhism/BuddhistDict/BDC.html ---Cosmology The Buddha proclaimed that on the highest level of understanding the entire cosmos is pure Mind. On the ordinary level of understanding he painted a picture of a cosmos filled with countless world-systems (see entry) with countless planets filled with living beings of every sort. Our particular world-system is neither unique nor central in any way. Other world systems also have their Buddhas, who also teach the path to enlightenment. The Flower Adornment Sutra describes the universe as consisting of an infinitely large lotus-flower in which our world occupies the thirteenth tier. The lotus is suspended on various oceans of primal mind-energy forces called Great Elements. Our World System: the Saha World Our particular world-system, as is the case with all world systems, can be described in both 'horizontal' and 'vertical' directions. The 'horizontal' refers to its layout in space, while the 'vertical' dimension refers to the levels of consciousness of the various types of beings who inhabit it. The center of our world is Mount Sumeru, which is surrounded by four great 'continents'. Earth is located in the southern continent, named Jambudvipa. The continents are surrounded by seas and rings of iron mountains. Within the Saha world are Six Paths of Rebirth (see entry), that is, six different types of living beings, each with its own distinctive kind of karma. The Beings are generally categorized according to which of the Three Worlds (see entry) they abide in. The Three Worlds are the world of desire, the world of form, and the formless world. The characteristics of some of these beings are described in the entries for gods, ghosts, asura, Six Desire Heavens, Four Dhyanas, Four Formless Realms---
  22. Thoughts on Buddhism?

Its part of the culture to drink wine. They drink during business because one's real thoughts come out when they are drunk. All to remove the "face" of deceit....
  23. Thoughts on Buddhism?

People think what China does is bad. They have no idea why, and the intent of the Chinese Gov. Nor do they understand the cultural reasons behind their actions. Quick to complain and protest against China, but no one looks at the what American Gov. does just with Western Medicine alone. A total legal killing of people all over the world.
