I finally finished the book a few days ago. I was thoroughly entertained throughout
Â
Now, I've realised something due to things that are repeated several times in the book. Of course, Chuang Tzu wasn't a Taoist as he was a pioneer of bringing the ideas into text. The Taoist came later - us who study the Tao.
Â
Ok, let me stop here for a minute. Isn't such study the exact thing that Chuang Tzu was ridiculing all throughout the book? Isn't this what Confucius and many others were doing and just not getting it? The idea of ritual is spoken against yet a lot of us sit in meditation daily as a routine. Many strive for enlightenment, but aren't we just chasing something that isn't there by doing so?
Â
A lot of us on the forum get caught up in metaphysics and spiritual ideas/dogma. Is this really being a Taoist? If so, I think that Taoism might be missing the point a little bit. The debates that are had are somewhat pointless in the eyes of Chuang Tzu, right?
Â
Do discuss!

Oh!, yes indeed. I could speak volumes to this but I won't.

3deedit - why are those three words green and underlined? Are you asking for feedback?
Â
#11 is one of the champion verses for me, too. The German translator Günter Debon renders the first phrase thusly:
Â
Der Speichen dreimal zehn
Auf einer Nabe stehn
Eben dort, wo sie nicht sind
Ist des Wagens Brauchbarkeit
Â
I translate that something along these lines:
Â
Spokes, three times ten
Around a hub are fastened
Exactly there, where they are not
Is the wagon's useful spot
Â
The 'stehn' at the end of line two in the German basically means 'are' or 'exist'. My 'fastened' isn't the most accurate word, neither is the 'useful spot', but they work poetically and I like poetry :-)
Â
IIRC, Debon put effort into rhyming his translation wherever the original does the same. It's relatively easy to do in German, and more of a challenge in English.
Â
How does this render in Belgian?
NOPE, i like this duality in colours; to me this verse refers to "solarplexus"

from the same source came a "proof" that Pi=constant=3,1415926

Hi 3deedit,
Â
Yep. But that is a very difficult concept to hold to because our brain functions according to dualistic concepts.
Â
I like to mention the rose when discussing the concept of daulities. The rose isn't just the flower but it is the entire plant, thorns and all. If we prick our finger on a thorn we are going to say "Bad thorn" or look at the flower and say "Beautiful flower".
Â
But if we look at the rose plant in its totality we don't need dualities. We can enjoy the beauty of the flower and foliage but be aware of the danger of pricking our finger on a thorn.
my in the name of the One: would nature creates such a beauty:it is supposed to enjoy outdoors not in a vase!! if you put it indoors chances you ptick your fingers...;-)

That is an interesting thought... that Xun was the highest [of the three] levels; an Immortal from Gu Ye. I had not thought in that line. Why didn't someone just say that at the beginning
Â
I had thought he was probably (Ok... an assumption) at the Liezi level; deep seeker but not the immortal status but I'm reading for the first time and open to what unfolds here.
why don't you use a pendulum and ask a question?

that is the Master's way.

Yep. There are a lot of people into that. I'm not one of them.

No. You are a creation that has been afforded free will and the power of making choices and taking responsibility for your actions.
Â
So you have no right to blame or praise whatever supreme power you believe in.
Â
You are the utility (instrument) of your own making.

So what does the above section say to you?

My view is similar to this, said in a contemporary context:
Â
Â
47. It is not necessary to possess all the data to know your best course. Without exhaustive inspection of each and every factor, what feels right and good your spirit will announce.
Â
There are times when data are no use, when information distances, and learnedness obscures the heart of certainty. The keen-minded, without hurrying to meetings knows the crucial issues, without analysis recognizes the choices, without programs does what needs doing. The best of all action stems from the fact of being.

Fame or integrity: which is more important?
Money or happiness: which is more valuable?
Success of failure: which is more destructive?
Â
If you look to others for fulfillment,
you will never truly be fulfilled.
If your happiness depends on money,
you will never be happy with yourself.
Â
Be content with what you have;
rejoice in the way things are.
When you realize there is nothing lacking,
the whole world belongs to you.

In pursuit of knowledge,
every day something is added.
In the practice of the Tao,
every day something is dropped.
Less and less do you need to force things,
until finally you arrive at non-action.
When nothing is done,
nothing is left undone.

by letting things go their own way.
It can't be gained by interfering.

30 FLOWERS support, promotion, protection
Â
Whoever relies on the Tao in governing men
doesn't try to force issues
or defeat enemies by force of arms.
For every force there is a counterforce.
Violence, even well intentioned,
always rebounds upon oneself.
The Master does his job
and then stops.
He understands that the universe
is forever out of control,
and that trying to dominate events
goes against the current of the Tao.
Because he believes in himself,
he doesn't try to convince others.
Because he is content with himself,
he doesn't need others' approval.
Because he accepts himself,
the whole world accepts him.

My name is Alec, I am from Northern Arizona in the beautiful ponderosa forest, and I've been loosely practicing martial arts for 9 years. My instructor began introducing me to Taoist practices (what he calls "4 Ascendant Spheres,") through monthly lectures a couple years after I started learning Qi Gong at the same school. I've come to this forum to.. Discuss with fellow practitioners!

As i explained on chapter one, in order to understand chapter 2, read first chapter 21
Â
Â
2 Abstraction
Â
When beauty is abstracted
Then ugliness has been implied;
When good is abstracted
Then evil has been implied.
Â
So alive and dead are abstracted from nature,
Difficult and easy abstracted from progress,
Long and short abstracted from contrast,
High and low abstracted from depth,
Song and speech abstracted from melody,
After and before abstracted from sequence.
Â
The sage experiences without abstraction,
And accomplishes without action;
He accepts the ebb and flow of things,
Nurtures them, but does not own them,
And lives, but does not dwell.

I use a pendulum and a dictionary to obtain information and these tools guided me towards a new reading sequence of the TAO TEH KING : www.3deedit.be/taotehking.html
Â
In order to comprehend chapter 1, read chapter 20 first.
The end of chapter 20 ends with " I drink from the Great Mother's Breasts "
In the translation from Twinner ; "the essence" should be understood as Dark Matter
In this translation it is called the flow of the way.
Â
Dark Matter cannot be seen but it is vital and present in every single atom in the entire Universe. As in other chapters can be read : it flows even there where there is no space...
and : know the white, keep the black...
Â
There is a saying : " Indoor flowers are like Humans without fresh air "
Understand these 2 chapters as a call to stop Air Pollution.

Stop thinking, and end your problems.
What difference between yes and no?
What difference between success and failure?
Must you value what others value,
avoid what others avoid?
How ridiculous!
Other people are excited,
as though they were at a parade.
I alone don't care,
I alone am expressionless,
like an infant before it can smile.
Other people have what they need;
I alone possess nothing.
I alone drift about,
like someone without a home.
I am like an idiot, my mind is so empty.
Other people are bright;
I alone am dark.
Other people are sharper;
I alone am dull.
Other people have a purpose;
I alone don't know.
I drift like a wave on the ocean,
I blow as aimless as the wind.
I am different from ordinary people.
I drink from the Great Mother's breasts.

1 The Way 1 VOYAGER:messages, transport, visitors
Â
The Way that can be experienced is not true;
The world that can be constructed is not real.
The Way manifests all that happens and may happen;
The world represents all that exists and may exist.
Â
To experience without abstraction is to sense the world;
To experience with abstraction is to know the world.
These two experiences are indistinguishable;
Their construction differs but their effect is the same.
Â
Beyond the gate of experience flows the Way,
Which is ever greater and more subtle than the world
