  1. Last night my teeth infections hurt so bad I kept telling myself I would not kill myself. It was very tempting to end the pain with a bullet.

It might be better to swish a shot of rum around in your mouth. If you are sensitize to cold, you might find Malibu okay at room temperature. It isn't as strong so you will just have to use more.

  2. A techique I heard about was to use a prayer or a mantra. Start by saying it out loud, then go on to say it to yourself in your head. Go slowly and focus on each word intentionally. Allow it to slow down. When you feel ready, mentally jump backward into the gap before the word you just said. The quality of the silence will be flavored by the energy of the prayer or mantra you have been using.

  3. Transfer of consciousness. Phowa is one of the Six Yogas of Naropa. It is frequently taught publicly, but it takes a considerable amount of work to learn to do it. Doing the full technique prematurely is a form of suicide, but there are ways to practice parts of the technique so that when the time comes you can do the full thing.

  4. Too much stress, not enough sleep, junk food, and being exposed to sexual imagery and ideas all contribute to making it more of a challenge. In men, prostate imflammation also makes control more difficult and things like stress, caffeine, and alcohol cause this imflammation. Saw palmetto can help and you do not have to wait until you are old to take it. In can even help in your 20s and 30s.

  5. A recent documentary on suicide jumpers from the Golden Gate Bridge recounts several of the few who actually

survived the jump having extreme regret once they had launched off the bridge and changing their minds. One

can only wonder at how many of the "successful" jumpers felt the same way, but were helpless to reverse the

decision they had made and plunged regretfully to their deaths.

They probably felt extremely alive in those last seconds.

When subjects are in a deep meditative state, Bentov's machine measures an almost pure,

regular, S-shaped sine wave of large amplitude and moving at approximately 7 cycles/second.

This is opposed to an irregular wave in the baseline resting state before and after meditation.

Something happens in meditation which does not normally occur in most of our waking,

dreaming or sleeping lives. At the same time we enter a hypometabolic state in which our

breathing rate slows down and the oxygen need of our tissues lessens. We should note that it

is also possible to produce a sine wave on the ballistocardiograph by stopping our breath,

however, we quickly develop oxygen deficiency and have to overbreathe to restore balance.

In meditation, however, this does not occur; we are balanced at all levels.

  7. If you have something that needs to be healed, it will continue to attract more of the same until you fix the problem. Protection techniques can minimize the symptoms, but an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Better still, when you have healed yourself of a specific problem you are qualified to help other people to be healed of the same problem.

  8. The trick to receiving is being open. A good teacher can speed up the process, but so can life experience if you approach it in the right way. Stop thinking so much and trying to dissect your life. It isn't about understanding anything intellectually. You already have everything you need; the problem is that you also have so much other stuff that you don't need getting in the way. There is no shortage of teachers along the way who will help, if you are willing. They can be difficult to recognize because they rarely come in the form you are expecting.

  9. Osho had his own message and he could present it in the context of Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism, and Islam in such a way that he was very convincing as if he were speaking as a member of one of those religions. I did not know he could do it within Taoism, too, but it makes sense. When he was a very young child, he spent a lot of time with his grandparents and they allowed him to spend much of his formative years in meditative silence / stillness. He did not really develop within any one tradition, and his education in school was allowed to wait.

  10. One of the books I read on Buddhist meditation - it was a long time ago, I forgot which one - said that one of the advantages of sitting meditation is that when you are sitting and meditating quietly, it is a somewhat inactive condition. It is difficult to create a lot of negative karma if you are sitting still and not even thinking much. It is even harder to create negative karma if you are doing this and you feel really good. It is at the very least time off from creating problems that will later hit the fan.

People have known for a long time that if you want to succeed at something you should spend time with successful people. There is a natural tendency to become more like the people you associate with. Unfortunately, "down" is easy while "up" requires constant effort. When drastic improvement is required it is better to be around lots of people who are setting a good example rather than just one or two, because if there aren't enough people to hold the level then they might be brought down.

  11. When ego is the master and not the servant, the ego will tell you that all sorts of bad things can happen if you try to get by without it. It is a defense mechanism. The ego works best when it takes the servant role, but it has been allowed to run things for too long and it isn't easy to set the situation right again. You don't have to get rid of the ego; you just have to recognize that you are the one in control and you are not your ego.

  12. It seems to me like the Kunlun system just feels slightly repulsive ... to me. The technique really does work for me and it works quickly, but I can't get myself to do it. I had heard that there were people here who had simplified the technique down and removed it from all the baggage. At first I thought that it would be as simple as using the search feature, but it turns out that people like to mention Kunlun in threads that have nothing to do with it and they like to go off topic a lot in threads that are supposed to be about Kunlun. It also seems like there are a lot of people here who really look down on the practice for some reason.
