    Cobie, I got a copy of this Krol's book you mentioned and I realize that I have this dictionary addon installed on Pleco app that also come with another interesting consideration about those two characters, as we can see on the book A Dictionary of Chinese Buddhist Terms by William Edward Soothill (also in pleco app as free dict.), p563 (https://terebess.hu/zen/Soothill-Buddhist-Dictionary-of-Chinese-Terms.pdf) :

     

    " 知 To know. Sanskrit root vid, hence vidyā, knowledge; the Vedas, etc. 知 vijñā is to know, 智 is vijñāna, wisdom arising from perception or knowing (+ a buddhist deeper meaning of knowing that object is inseparable from the total experience of reality).".

     

    Although I fully agree that makes no difference to the this DDJ chapter, interesting to see as a wisdom that arises from knowing . Also realized now that is upper part of 智  +  sun on the lower part  having this ideographic of : Known 知 clearly 日. 

     

    I hope you don't mind about those Buddhist/Sanskrit considerations. And in addition, thank you all: Cobie, Ilumairen, Mango and Blue eyed snake for your attention!

Hi, this is Eric Fagundes from Sao Paulo Brazil, I'm acupuncturist, I have been study classical medical and philosophical texts as foundation to my clinical practices since I read an Elisabeth Rochat book translating chapter 8 of Neijing Lingshu. So, last year I started to learn classical chinese with her and with Peter Smith to a better comprehension of the texts.

     

    I have a lot of Dao De Jing versions and reading Dao De Jing in Clear English of Jeff Pepper and Xiao Hui Wang, they use the forum as reference, so, that's why I'm here.

     

    In advance, can someone help with line 11 of Laozi chapter 3, some versions use  "使夫1者不敢為也" (https://ctext.org/dao-de-jinghttps://www.daodejing.org/3.html) and others  "使夫者不敢為也" (http://www.laozica.org/第3章不尚賢使民不爭/https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/7337/pg7337.html). Although most of the translators translate it as knowledge, that is a possible translation for both characters, can some clarify why this difference in chinese versions?

     

    Any reference that goes thru such analysis is also appreciated :)
