Chapters 12-24 translated by W. Allyn Rickett. Guanzi: Political, Economic, and Philosophical Essays from Early China. Vol. 2. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1998.
Selections translated by Harold D. Roth. âThe Inner Cultivation Tradition of Early Daoism.â In Religions of China in Practice, edited by Donald S. Lopez, Jr., 124-48. Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1996.
Categorized as a âmiscellaneousâ or âmixed-togetherâ (za é) text under Han bibliographic categories, this anthology was traditionally ascribed to Master Guan, a minister of the state of Qi who died in 645 B.C.E. The core of the received edition dates to the 3rd century B.C.E. It includes some material that may be labeled âDaoistâ or âproto-Daoist,â especially the so-called âHeart-Mind Techniquesâ (xinshu ĺżčĄ) chapters: âXinshu shangâ ĺżčĄä¸ (Heart-Mind Techniques, Part I; ch. 13), âXinshu xiaâ ĺżčĄä¸ (Heart-Mind Techniques, Part II; ch. 13), âBaixinâ ç˝ĺż (Purifying the Heart-Mind; ch. 13), and âNeiyeâ ĺ §ćĽ (Inward Training; ch. 16).

DRINKING ALONE WITH THE MOON
ÂFrom a pot of wine among the flowersÂ
I drank alone. There was no one with me --Â
Till, raising my cup, I asked the bright moonÂ
To bring me my shadow and make us three.Â
Alas, the moon was unable to drinkÂ
And my shadow tagged me vacantly;Â
But still for a while I had these friendsÂ
To cheer me through the end of spring....Â
I sang. The moon encouraged me.Â
I danced. My shadow tumbled after.Â
As long as I knew, we were boon companions.Â
And then I was drunk, and we lost one another.Â
...Shall goodwill ever be secure?Â
I watch the long road of the River of Stars.

Greetings, earthlings. Just wandering on the way here. Observing and doing. My background is in the usual... reading Dao De Jing & Zhuangzi... practicing taijiquan, xingyiquan, baguazhang, & yiquan... doing neidan and zhan zhuang... and so on. Have a bit of a strange sense of humor, so when in doubt, just assume I am joking. Thank you to all the admins and folks for making this space inhabitable.
Best wishes,~ Jeff
