'Nine Nights With The Taoist Master'

Recommended Posts

I would like to ask about the book: 'Nine Nights With The Taoist Master'.

Has anyone here read the book, if so, is the Deluxe Study Edition really worth the $50.00 that Amazon.com charges for it?

It reputedly is a teaching manual (sort of) for a Daoist oral teaching tradition about the Tao Te Ching.

I guess my question would be "Is there REALLY an oral teaching tradition about the TTC?"

Would anyone care to talk about Daoist oral teachings on the Dao De Ching?

Do such teachings exist?

Thanks.

Peace, gossamer

There is a tiny thread in the book club if anyone is interested in discussing this book.

I do not have it yet as I can only source it from Amazon and as pointed out the deluxe study edition isn't cheap but I was thinking about getting it eventually. Particularly for the oral teachings part.

So is there a better way to get this written oral version :)

You say this book is a waste of money or was that just about the deluxe vs the normal edition?

i am against the Liaos book altogether..any book which has "You are the miracle" on the cover got tobe deep-sixed without cracking it open. http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/097654542X..._pt#reader-link

I've read it and it's good.

But to be clear, it's basically a Daodejing adventure narrative. You'll find the Daodejing worked into the story and other chapters that describe some ways De is applied in life and in meditation. Liao knows his stuff.

That said $50 is a steep price for a fiction novel. I think I paid $16 used and don't regret it.

I have not read the book but I can tell you that Waysun Liao has hard core ability.

Start a thread on how you know this please! I am a huge fan of him because his ESSENCE OF TAI CHI book really helped me pushed my alchemy into the more advanced stages and it was the first instance of bone breathing exercises I ever came across.

Cheers for the link, the amazon ones were not working but I can read the search string so its all good.

I like the idea of a "Daodejing adventure narrative" :) I'm a bit of a sucker for "fairy tails", I quite enjoyed Wong's 7 Taoist Masters. I should stop mucking around and just get a good translation of Journey to the West.

But I'm sulking because the arse has fallen out of the Aus$ AGAIN :(

I think you should not pass judgments without either trying out the man's style of training or reading his books. From your posts it seems obvious that you haven't read anything he has written.

Each of his books are profoundly informative, with absolutely no gimmicks involved (he doesn't try and sell you anything). A lot of what you'll see at his website is a creation of his students (He believes in Wu Wei and goes with the flow, I'm told by a very reliable source).

Anyone who has attended classes at his center in Oak Park, IL or studied with any of his students will not doubt anything he writes. Master Liao is for real.

I'd strongly recommend reading "Nine Nights" along with his other books, including "Tai Chi Classics". I'd also recommend interested seekers to try out his style of Tai Chi (called Temple style Tai Chi) which predominantly deals with single-form practice. After each single form is learnt and felt, the long form is put together and is posed as a challenge to the student to retain flow during the various stages and in between transitions.

Hi Gossamer,
For me, this book has been a doorway to enhanced experience of chi and deepening connection with Tao. It has truly changed my life. I recommend it highly, and, if you're serious, spring for the $50 version. It has the complete text of Liao's translation in the back, which I never expected to use. However, the book itself got me into comparing translations so I could see how Liao's translation, "informed by the oral tradition," differed from other translations out there, so the continuous text has been very helpful. The study edition also has a glossary of key terms, which I find very helpful to read through occasionally. I've read the book itself at least 8 timesthere's lots more to it than meets the eye in the initial reading.

There's a thread on Nine Nights in the book forum here.

Why? Is there a necessary pre-condition that a teacher has to teach all Tao material for free?

And does charging money dilute or negate the teachings in any way?

So may be you wanna think again...not everything in this world is for free.

Dear Folks,

I wanted to say 'thank you' for ALL of your answers.

I bought THIS BOOK:

http://www.amazon.com/Walking-Tao-Search-U...1109&sr=1-1

From amazon.com, and it was, and IS a waste of money, so I just did not wanna repeat that mistake!

I think that I WILL purchase the Deluxe Study Edition of 'Nine Nights With The Taoist Master' after reading all of your posts.

Thanks again.

Peace, gossamer
