Ankle Problem, Possible to heal without surgery?

Recommended Posts

:) I'd like to leave the cutting as a last resort.

But then again I don't know if physio alone will allow the 2 torn ligaments to heal correctly.

May know more after the physio appointment today.

Get a Wobble Board and stand on it with one leg 10 min a day work to 1 hr a day while you do deep belly breathing as you watch tv or what ever.

This will rehabilitate and stabalize the ankle fast. Also do ankle rotations SLOW.

And go see some good healers to give it good chi.

Peace & best of luck.

is it possible to heal without surgery? yes. is it likely? probably not.

and if she's not motivated and consistent, it's not even possible, IMO.

breaks, sprains, tears, and that sort of thing, tend to be far more responsive to western treatment. chronic conditions, viruses, tumors, that sor of thing, to respond best to eastern methods. that has been my experience and the advice of my teachers in the past. this isn't a hard and fast rule, but it's generally true.

i don't really get why this issue is a scary one. there are worse things in life than ankle surgery.

one of my guys tore something in his ankle about 7 months ago. it always feels better after i work on it, but he's never been consistent with giving it its due attention. it's kind of a mind set issue, where you want out of the discomfort so you can go back to ignoring your body again. as soon as he was out of any discomfort he decided that it was healed enough, so he proceeded screw it up more. and this is a guy who would train in qigong and healing techniques with me on a regular basis.

my recommendation to him now is to get the surgery. it is what it is, you know?

at the same time, i have another student, a very gifted female, who broke her arm and healed it in a little over a week. the doctor couldn't find a trace on the x-ray. for her she was just enjoying the energetic exploration of her body, and she was really in tune.

i would really get over what almost sounds like a phobia and come to terms with the fact that surgeries a real possibility, and that it's okay.

i'm a healer by trade, but sometimes i have to send people away and tell them to see a doctor before they return. sometimes i tell them to get the surgery, and i assist them greatly in the rehab process. only on occasion do miracles happen, and i think those instances have more to do with them than it does with me.

clinging to fear can ensure that a miracle doesn't happen. so either way, i say it's important to let go of fear, and know that what will be, will be.

Other than miraculous healing, a hard part to rehabilitate with a complete tear. There's not enough muscle there to strengthen to stabilize the part and without surgery strenuous activity would be likely blow it out again and make it even worse.

Hi Mal #2,

The MRI findings you are describing are what is known in the business as a 'sprained ankle' - that's exactly what is torn when you have a bad lateral ankle sprain. The only patient I would consider offering surgery for this injury would be a high performance, professional athelete who needs to get back to work ASAP. The vast majority of people with this injury have an excellent long term outcome and a stable ankle.

Just because a ligment is completely torn does not mean that the body cannot heal it. Certain wrist ligaments and the ACL and PCL in the knee are exceptions and usually require surgery. The ankle almost always heals itself. There is a small incidence (probably less than 10%) of chronic instability than requires late surgical reconstruction in bad ankle sprains. I would suggest a second opinion and non-surgical treatment. In the unlikely event that there is instability in the future, reconstructive surgery usually works well.

Good luck - PM me if you have further questions.

Steve

Does anyone here actually specialize in this? If the docs they are seeing are saying "ankle surgery is recommended" and when it's a complete tear, then it seems that surgery is the best option. We are just taobums, not professionals (as far as I know)...why should anyone listen to us!

I've never heard of someone miraculouly healing a complete tear...maybe it's possible, but the proof is in the pudding. Maybe try calling Chunyi Lin, and see if the tears suddenly go back to normal (I doubt it). The best I think you can hope for is quick healing from surgery through recovery. Seeing some chi healers would of course be beneficial, but not the magic bullet. Vajrasattva's advice is good, and I'm sure whoever she sees later (physical therapist?) would have her do those exact things. And Hundun's post rocked.

In response to your question, I've been a practicing Orthopedic surgeon for 18 years. Ligaments that are completely torn almost always heal except for a few exceptions as I mentioned above. It is not a miracle, it is natural. Well, you could certainly call it miraculous, after all isn't life miraculous? But the point is, our body is perfectly capable of healing torn ligaments. Treatment is needed, but rarely is surgery necessary for most ligament injuries.

My partner is a fellowship trained foot and ankle specialist. His opinion is that anyone recommending urgent surgical repair of a sprained ankle in anyone other than a professional athelete is being extremely aggressive. I agree with him. Just the opinions of two surgeons who take care of these injuries every day and operate on people for a living.

I'm not trying to tell Mal#2 what to do or to provide any specific medical advice in this particular case, other than to encourage a second opinion and to share my views with the readers of this forum.

Take it as you will.

Good luck Mal#2.

Steve
