"Meditation in Affliction

Assailed by afflictions, we discover Dharma
And find the way to liberation. Thank you, evil forces!

When sorrows invade the mind, we discover Dharma
And find lasting happiness. Thank you, sorrows!

Through harm caused by spirits we discover Dharma
And find fearlessness. Thank you, ghosts and demons!

Through people's hate we discover Dharma
And find benefits and happiness. Thank you, those who hate us!

Through cruel adversity, we discover Dharma
And find the unchanging way. Thank you, adversity!

Through being impelled to by others, we discover Dharma
And find the essential meaning. Thank you, all who drive us on!

We dedicate our merit to you all, to repay your kindness."

All true enough - but I often meet people who do not know why sequences of bad things happen  and struggle without benefit.

I have just re-met a doctor I know from 40 years ago.  He was dying of bone cancer without realizing that the dark entity attached to the back of his neck was the immediate cause.

The next level of causation was personal karma.

And the next level of causation was an oppression system designed to disable useful humans

The next level of causation was and is planetary karma.

Such is life.

His bone and kidney energies look like they are improving.  I await his next set of tests.

Perhaps the Lipika Lords (Lords of Karma) will look kindly upon him.

and there is that saying along the lines of, " the worst thing that ever happened to me turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me"

That is only from those that rose above their troubles.  Most just get reborn into similar situations

Anthony Demello put it this way - pleasant experiences make life delightful, painful experiences are opportunities for growth.

so concerning the op, I think it also has its dangers in potential misapplication by the well meaning but more or less unprepared if one does not protect themselves at the same time.

There is also a kind of flip side  to the Prayer/Meditation in Affliction with:   "Strange but amazing that Ravana was aware of his impending doom. He knew his fate that he will die by the hands of an avatar of Vishnu, and will help him to attain moksha and give up his demon form...."

Thus a demon thankful in a way that he was slain by Lord Rama.
