NM Wildfires

Recommended Posts

The Hermit's Peak fire has grown to 260K acres as of a few hours ago and there be no stopping it. The main thrust of the fire is about 20 miles from Taos NM and probably 20 miles from Santa Fe. The SW is in the midst of a severe drought.

Took awhile to upload an image. The fire clouds as seen here are indicative of a crown fire. Not something anyone wants to be close to.

You can see how dry it is in the foreground trees...

The drought is extremely severe here. There are thousands of dead pinyons on the East side of town on Old Santa Fe Trail not far from St. Johns College. Pinyon mortality is caused by an Ips confusus bark beetle which is a vector for a particular species of fungus which kills the tree almost overnight. Dead trees equals fire hazard.
