It's easier to be kind, from a place of strength and security.  Which makes kindness when weak and with little, all the more precious.

Cruelty often springs from a fear of loss, the wish for dominance.    It's minor key is impatience and ignoring, which can do as much damage as active nastiness.

Hi Michael,

Your reference to a place of strength and security re kindness...

has this question begged of myself...

"Is The Dao Bums Forum (TDB) such a place?"

To me TDB is like any place on Earth

It has kindred possibilities

I had left TDB a few times

But I return now and then

Why?

Because of the few kind Bums I have crossed paths with

Starting with...

with the music above, thanks Limahong, I remembered some maybe appropriate saying of a postcard, it mentions no author:

I want to value you

without judging you,

take you seriously

without committing you to anything,

invite you

without making demands on you,

inform you

without lecturing you,

give you something

without attaching expectations to it,

share my feelings with you

without making you responsible for them,

say goodbye to you

without having missed anything essential,

take care of you

without wanting to change you,

enjoy you as you are.

Blessed be all the people who are able to live up to this! ;)

just what could be defined to be the art of kindness :)

that's not to say that there aren't also simpler ways of kindness.

True.

It's easier to extend mercy from a position of strength and security as well.

I think Vladimir Putin said: being polite while having weapons is a little different than being polite without weapons. probably, a loose paraphrase.

Earlier, I said that kindness builds strength.

Good point, and all of your statements are good points.

I think that showing kindness under these circumstances exhibits great understanding. I think it also reveals extraordinary strength.

Kindness has no concern of fear and no desire to dominate. If it looks to dominate or acts out of fear, then it is not Kindness.

Negligence, disregard, are not the 'virtues' that compliment Kindness.

Kindness looks to avoid damage and repair damage.

here in Chicago, its widely quoted but somewhat dubious that-

"It is said of Al Capone that he always claimed that the best way to get along was with a “kind word and a gun, especially a gun.”

“Cause we all have wings but some of us don’t know why”

Spoiler

you may be surprised what an unconquerable team that can be put together from a few encouraging words. It doesn’t jump from a few encouraging words to an unconquerable team, just like that, but it is a start, bridging to more bonding opportunities,

Right now secret agents of kindness are speaking cheerful words to strangers, friends they just hadn’t met yet. Join them, join us.

Kindness Reigns

The struggle is real

the senseless violence, war, the fallout from war impacting all of our lives, the cruelty, greed, the false gods who think they are grasping power, and the grief that is spread out over the masses.

well, the masses are folks like you and I. Some of them are waiting on that kind word or a simple act of kindness. Once seeded, it will grow. Believe that, See that.

yesterday, I critiqued a classmate’s, plaster of Paris work, started off about the size of a small loaf of bread.
I said it was an abstract tear. The lines, shape were crisp clean, and refined So, it was not a tear of despair. It was a cleansing tear. There was implied motion worked into the piece. Then she touched it so it rocked. It literally had movement. Another classmate said it looked like a boat on the waves of the ocean. I said, all tears find their way to the ocean. And the professor gave me that look, like don’t go too far towards mischief, playful of course.

I continued, the tear is moving on, enthusiastically,  the creator of the piece nodded, yes.
the professor asked if I saw anything else.

yes I did, a distinctive shadow, something is hidden, something I can’t see.

the professor asked me what it was I couldn’t see.

what caused the tear, I said.
the professor asked her if I was right with my analysis. She said, absolutely.

we all shed tears, eh?
some are due to grief, terrible misfortune. We’ve all been there.

we share that in common. Remember the tears cleanse us. It is a sign of purification.

we all can fly.
until we figure out how to smoothly use our wings, gravity is our friend, and from up high, tears fall down too, the rain washes away what needs to be.

enjoy your day, and thank you for reading this.

Spoiler

Edit to add,

the are also tears of Joy.
