Stomach pain when trying alcohol

Hello everyone, 

I never was the one who drank much alcohol. During the last 15 years I had only 3 or 4 times the year a drink, for example on a birthday. 

And the more I practice the internal arts, the less alcohol I want to drink. 

And here comes the point. 

Since a few months (I have increased my practice to 2 hours per day, sometimes 3) , I am not able to drink only a bit of alcohol at all. After a half glass of wine or bear my stomach is aching and it feels like the stomach crunches (hope that is the right word). I realized that two times this year, when I was at a birthday. 

 

My teacher says it could be normal because the body becomes more sensible, but he is not sure that pain in stomach is normal when trying alcohol. 

 

I'm complete healthy, only when trying a drink, this pain is coming. 

Has anyone else practicing the arts, had similar experience?

Why would you drink if it is clearly too Yang for you? Stomach Fire + Liver Fire. 

 
For medicinal purposes it's a wonderful substance...when combined with herbs like Gou Qi Zi and Wu Wei Zi during the winter months to nourish the Kidney.

 

But you need to see a physician for this to determine whether you need it or not according to your constitution.

 

Until then stay way from it!

Hello,

Sometimes we perceive things in some other dimensions that we arent quite aware. Things have a lot of things associated with themselves in those other dimensions. That is to say or examplify as if : That thing has a word and sound form, a material form, a past universal form etc. Now, since you have wanted to have a different perception with your body, that thing's perception changed in your body as well.

Then you ask: why it is towards alcohol and not towards any other things? Does this even have any significance that your body picked alcohol to give an hint and not apple juice?

You are absolutely right. Like I said, I never drank much. But since that stomach aching, I stopped it completely. 

My question is, if there are other practitioners experienced the same and why it is that way.

as Gerard said, highly concentrated alcohol is Yang (hot) and can cause pain in people with stomach fire (burning pain after drinking or eating). Is the pain different if your drink beer, wine or spirits?

 

But this burning pain should also be able to be caused by any other very hot food or drink, like hot spices (chili, cayenne pepper), black coffee, barbecued lamb or game meat.

 

Are you generally hot of temperature? Do you sweat easily? Do you suffer from heartburn/reflux?

 

Does your face and eyes tend to get red?

How is your tongue? Red? Yellow coating? maybe a straight crack in the middle?

 

To answer your question, you don´t give enough information. I don´t think from my experience, that martial arts lead to physical problems with alcohol. Rather your mind does not need it that much anymore.

Alcohol dissolves tensions and relaxes you,. the same you achieve by martial arts, so you get a better solution to stress.

But usually the stomach can still transform alcohol.

So I think there must be other reasons, I mentioned a few questions above, maybe you really suffer from "stomach fire" and should reduce all hot foods for a while.

If anything, I think your cultivation is probably helping you become aware of something that may have been there all along.

 

Really recommend checking out a good acupuncturist, doc, or stomach gut health doc.

 

If you want diagnostic help, Master Lin or any of his students in SFQG can tell you what is going on.

Eric Isen is really good as well.

Thank you Sea Turtle. 

Stomach fire is possible. 

I drink no coffee at all because than I get reflux and a bit of heartburn and I don't like the taste of coffee. 

So normally there are absolutely NO problems with my stomach. Only when trying alcohol or coffee. Wine and bear doesn't make difference. Same kind of pain. 

And yes, I'm sweating quite easy when practicing kicks etc. 

But no read face or very read tongue. 

I was vegetarian for the last 5 years and began eating meat 6 months ago. But it makes no problem. I felt, that my body needed it, because it became to weak when I trained much. So, with meat it's much better. I can practice 2 or three hours the day and it makes me stronger. 

So I think it's OK letting go of alcohol completely. 

Because normally I am really healthy. No problems at all

Like I said, normally I'm absolute healthy. 

So first step is, to drink no alc at all. That's fine.for me. I drank it only at birthdays etc, never at home or alone. 

So, no problem to stop it completely.

ok, so heartburn usually signifies stomach fire, so we would recommend to eat "cooling" foods.

 

Regarding meat (tonifies the qi, so yes, your perception is right), consider cooler methods of preparing the meat, like cooking, boiling or steaming, and sticking to cooler kinds, like chicken or other poultry.

 

Goat, lamb and venison is "hot", so not suitable for stomach fire, and every preparation with dry heat (baking/roasting, grilling, barbecueing or stirfrying is making food hotter, so get your meat in a nice chicken soup or  a stew or as a traditional Austrian Tafelspitz (steamed beef). In addition, try to balance meat with cooler foods (vegetables, steamed fruits etc.)

Consider replacing some of it with fish. Provides great protein, omega 3 fatty acids and rather strengthens the yin (also good for the sweating.

Red meat develops toxic metabolites in the large intestine, so should be reduced in the overall consumption. (bowel cancer risk)

Alcohol is pure yag as I said. Clearly not good for you. What's your star sign? Plus animal sign (yin/Taoist).

 

I'm a Fire Horse you can imagine the effect alcohol has in me if I take it for recreational reasons. I only take it in winter and as part of a medicinal elixir which I have brewed over a period of 3 months together with gou qi zi & wu wei zi (the amount I take is insignificant 40mL.for the alcohol to have a serious effect on the Liver and the Stomach). Not every day either. Just a bit here and then.


I'm 54 years of age, at an age of 30 I wouldn't even bother taking anything like this because Jing levels are high at that age due to the KD being strong.

Do not remove meat from your diet as it invigorates the Spleen, particularly this Metal Rat year being cold, controlling Wood (beef is Wood in nature) ---> Metal controls Wood element in Wuxing theory.


No reason why alcohol should be part of your life. 
 

Vegetarianism does not equate to health. 

 

Balancing diet is the key as well as listening to your body because everyone's yin-yang make up is different.

I see it like you do in that post. 

I always listen to my body and I've been living very good with it. 

I'm 51 and still in a good shape and my jing level feels still quite high (because of the external and internal practice and probably because of my preheaven ingredients imho). 

So I am a really lucky man and hope I can practice for the next 50 years.

I hope no one takes offense to a strictly medical point of view, but I recommend seeing a doctor if this is new for you. This can be a symptom of Hodgkin's Lymphoma. You're probably fine and just lost some tolerance, I'd like to ask did you have it on an empty stomach? Or have you been dieting or fasting? But whenever you have new symptoms, especially strange ones, it's a good idea to consult a doctor.

 

It should also be noted that according to Michael Saso, an ordained Zhengyi adept and anthropologist, many daoshi in Taiwan evidently have a reputation for being high functioning alcoholics, even accomplished ones? The line in the sand they seem to draw is staying sober for practice and liturgies. So it doesn't seem to me necessarily that practice would cause this kind of aversion.

Valuable and important contribution to any medical issue.

 

On forums like these, Eastern or traditional medicine can be prioritized, when western medicine is certainly valuable and has it's place, especially with acute issues, and shouldn't be dismissed.

I would also note that some people will seek 'alternative' approaches because the conventional approaches point to truths, or remedies, they'd rather avoid. Not that this is necessarily the case here.

Not to scare the OP but this is accurate.  This symptom can in some cases be the first one, and for a while the only one.  I'd look for a very good specialist to run some diagnostic tests.

I looked at my family and many of them including myself had and still have heartburn when eating or drinking the "wrong" things. 

And I tested other drinks with alcohol. The pain inside the stomach comes only when drinking red whine or cold beer (or sometimes black coffee). 

When I drink for example a small glass of whiskey or a Caipirinha, there is no pain in the stomach. 

And there are absolutely no other symptoms for lymphoma. 

I think I'm healthy and have only some problems with to much acid in the stomach.

Seems like a case of liver attacking the spleen.

Quite probably liver yin deficiency, especially with the vegetarian diet.

 

Chicken meat can be very good for you, especially chicken liver.

I'd say, since it is winter in the north hemisphere (and if he's from the northen part of the globe), maybe he should concede a bit on eating hot foods. Especially chicken brooth.

 

He could add some digestive spices in order to make it gentler in the stomach, for instance a little bit of cumin. It will be hot, but it won't be toxic.

thank you for your reply :)

 

No, I'm not from Brazil, I am an European. 

 

During the last days, I have eaten many warm meals with different kinds of meat, it was sometimes beef, sometimes pork and a bit of chicken and I have eaten less chocolate (I know, industrial sugar is bad, but sometimes in the evening, lying with my beloved wife in the living room and talking or reading, we love to eat some chocolate. So I won't let it completely, but I'll eat less of it). 

Thing is, since eating more meat and less sugar, heartburn has gone completely. So I was curious and testes a glass of wine yesterday evening...and nothing happened. No pain, no heartburn, nothing at all. 

I will watch it further, but I think, the problem has dissolved.
