Suggestions for exercise

Can anyone suggest gentle exercises for improving overall health?

Something not related to energy.

 

Baduanjin has been really good, but am not sure, after reading about mixing different systems and practices.

Kettle bells. You don't have to be a maniac about it.

I like kettlebells, but simple push ups and squats go a long way.

I have a pair of 9 pound hand weights.

I have a pair of 5 pound strap on ankle weights.

 

simple, range of motion exercises with the hand weights, low weight/high rep counts in series of 10 work wonders.

wear the ankle weights when I go walking once in a while, not everyday.

 

simple body weight exercises are my most favored.  taoist yoga postures

squats, push ups, planks, leg flexors, 30/90/6" leg raises

 

Can't beat simple walking though in my opinion.

Walking is my main.

 

edit to add:  while rehabbing my twice reconstructed ankle, water work was amazingly effective.  Walking through the water and hopping through 3-4 feet of water were incredibly effective.  Low impact.  Also a great cardio option with no impact on joints and great for breath work as well, with underwater swimming which is my favorite.  Tough to do now with covid, but for future reference, join somewhere with a pool and make use of it.

 

Also cycling is a great option for lower body and cardio, instead of jogging/running.  Too much pounding of the knee and ankle cartilage for running to be healthy long term in my experience.

I fell in love with running a few years ago. It wouldn’t be accurate to call it gentle but it is a very natural and often neglected human activity. We are anatomically optimized for running. Introduction can be gentle.

Rediscovered the joy of walking these couple of months.

 

I have been doing back exercises with core muscle strengthening similar to some of these:

Squats and swimming are out for now.

Looks like I need to include some kind of weightlifting. 

Have to check kettlebells. Training with hand weights seems to a good option.

You are right in a way @Limahong.

When doing Baduajin, I felt it was fueling all my other activities. It gave me a lot of mental and physical strength too.

Just walking and my other exercises do not feel the same (does not always feel energetic).

If you're practicing ba duan jin, practice a martial art too. I've recently added BDJ to my shaolin practice and it feels really synergistic. Yan Lei has an excellent range of DVDs called 'Shaolin Warrior' which are just fantastic workouts.

 

Or try shotokan karate. Its a really easy martial art to teach yourself. My old teacher learned remotely and travelled for JKA grading in Japan. He got up to 7th dan over the course of about 20 years.

Thank you for pointing me to the site of Yan lei. If I did not have a path, Shaolin would have been my choice esp. after seeing/hearing  Shi Heng Yi.
