He is new to me also.  Very good! He does not really fit into any category.  Interdimensional, supernatural, mixing of realities, very creative.

richly diverse and vast is the thousand years of Medieval art. there are paintings from the Medieval which are impressionistic, abstract and others which seem to foreshadow later styles and schools of art. the op said we can include other 2d forms of art and that allows tapestry and stained glass for which the Medieval period is also well known for. 

i think the paintings of the period take an unjustified bad rap. many dismiss it as bad art. 

id say its largely misunderstood and under appreciated. almost all from unknown artists. 

of course there are many paintings featuring Medieval cats.

This is a bit off topic but it reminded me of one of the greatest (IMO) Soviet era animated short films, "Contact" (1978)
