It's not a conspiracy theory anymore

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has demanded that China 'come clean' following reports that coronavirus originated in a Chinese laboratory, not as a bioweapon, but as part of bungling experiments to prove that Chinese scientists were superior to Americans in identifying emerging virus threats.

It follows multiple reports on Wednesday that intelligence officials believe coronavirus first crossed to humans accidentally during experiments with bats at the Wuhan Institute of Virology Lab.

After word of the outbreak finally became public, Chinese leaders were quick to blame Wuhan's 'wet market' where wild animals -- though not bats -- are sold for consumption, leading one source to tell Fox News the debacle is the 'costliest government coverup of all time.'

'Patient zero' worked at the Wuhan lab, and spread the virus into the local population after leaving work, sources told the outlet. CNN later reported that an American investigation into the lab's role in the global crisis is underway.

'What we do know is we know that this virus originated in Wuhan, China,' Pompeo told Fox News on Wednesday evening. 'We know there is the Wuhan Institute of Virology just a handful of miles away from where the wet market was. There is still lots to learn. The United States government is working diligently to figure it out.'

Any link to the CNN report you mentioned in the other thread?

Or is this all you got to go on to make you shoot that claim out that CNN is "also reporting on it"?

"CNN later reported that an American investigation into the lab's role in the global crisis is underway."

I'm assuming you can tell the difference between "CNN later reported that an American investigation into the lab's role in the global crisis is underway" and your excitement in calling out, "It's not a conspiracy theory anymore!" and this, from Pompeo, "There is still lots to learn." Anyway, sorry to disappoint, but this is stale news. They've been wanting to spin this line as a diversion to the obvious foot in trump's mouth since mid March. Maybe you weren't as stoked up about this issue back then and missed the party Gordon Chang & co. were throwing. Sorry man, your tongue would've licked the floor at some of the women that hung out at the party. Too bad.

All the same, Love your enthusiasm, dude.

It's an accurate claim.

But the reporter who got the scoop, is Bret Baier of Fox News, and he has the most detailed report. I'm not gonna link it though, cuz even though this isn't really political, apparently linking to Fox News is a no, no.

A very good friend of mine who studied Biology at UC Santa Cruz stated that the origins of the virus is caused by the human species abusing animals and the environment! Anthropogenic Global Warming being the basis of the Holocene extinction i.e, sixth mass extinction.

For all the Taoist wannabes here, think about what the Tao is in terms of the above.

Poultry and pig farms have been devastated the last few years by disease, leading to huge losses, many taken by China, but here too.  In the US we have places actively studying how relatively new deadly diseases transmit from say pig to other species*.  New viruses put our food supply at risk.  We need places like the Wuhan lab and below the Ohio State Research Program to study them, how to stop and protect against them.

The downside is where there are humans, there are accidents.  Its possible it escaped from the Wuhan lab.  That doesn't mean Wuhan created it, rather they were studying it.  Kind of a chicken and egg situation.  Undoubtedly they were the first to handle it.  Unfortunately the human mentality when things turn south is 'Cover Your Ass', from researcherers on up to the el presidente- Cover your ass, tell'em its under control, and its not so bad.

Until the truth burst that pimple. Unless you have unusual transparency built into the system, thats the way these things go.

At this point, manufactured or not is beside the point.  These labs do valuable work and oversight is needed that they all have safety protocols as close to failsafe as possible, along with 3rd party oversight on problems and leaks.  So instead of finger pointing, action can be taken to minimize and contain the problem.  Instead of each nation blaming each other.

This is an international problem and should be treated as such, not as political football.

".. In this study, birds that were given the virus developed diarrhea by two days after infection. Healthy birds housed with infected chickens and turkeys also developed diarrhea two days after exposure.  That rapid spread of disease surprised the Ohio State University scientists.

"We weren't even sure the virus would transmit from bird to bird. That's a significant finding," said senior author Scott Kenney, assistant professor of veterinary preventive medicine based in Ohio State's Food Animal Health Research Program at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) in Wooster."

Sorry @thelerner,

some things just are right and others are not, you are right, that big farms lead to a faster spread and new diseases. Also it needs to be studied, but not the way it was done by the scientists in Wuhan.
If you Follow the publications of shi zhengly (bat lady),  they begin fairly mild, she searches for coronaviruses in the population of china and in foodmarkets (like the one in wuhan) and correlates them to animals, and where they most likely originated from.
Also She did warn about some strains of Viruses that can become inflammatory for the lungs  (use google.scholar that helps). And in this context the science is needed, but what is not needed and what has been done is venturing to places where very few humans ever have gone to find bats with new strains and see what these strains can do. its practically doing what columbus did unintentionally, just in full knowledge what it could lead to.

Were you are wrong is the risk for our food source.

Our biggest Risk for the foodsource are we ourselves, we want cheap food and best in massive amounts, so corporates cut down on anything.

If our food is produced in a reasonable way and the animals used for food are healthy, then the problems we face now are minimized to a manageable degree, so there would be no need to research viruses in animal farms.

But how is reality, Animals have barely the place to stand and eat at the place they fecate in... do you eat in your toilet?

Everything else is dictated by logic

How do we ascertain if a virus has been genetically modified?   If someone produces something like a human with 2 heads, then it is obvious.  But if the modification is very minor - slightly more hair, then how do we know nothing has been tampered?

There are experts in pandemics and virology who know how to manipulate bacteria and virus's; studied how they evolve and mutate.  They compare whats out there to stuff that's manipulated and what evolves, looking for markers.

So the short answer is decades of study and some very expensive equipment.  Even then I don't know if they could be 100% sure.   Maybe its easier to say a definitive yes, versus probable no.  From my limited reading when such experts looked at the virus they came up with probably not.

Course these things mutate, so plain old fashioned, low tech, breeding for characteristics could produce new virulent strains.  Which Covid19, isn't.  Its much less deadly then SARS was.  Its just more catchy, spreads easily during incubation and kills mainly older people.  Its not a gun its a hand grenade, one that no one can run away from.  Not til there's herd immunity, a vaccine, and or living with it, as we do colds and flu.

It's  pretty clear that the US intelligence community is demonstrably getting politicized to demonize ALL things Chinese as the next permutation of Trump's scapegoating and deflection from his own incompetence.  Fox News is complicit in this ongoing charade.

Not just Fox News...

The end game here is to justify punishing and blaming China?

That's not necessarily wrong but shouldn't be a major focus right now.  Other then for political purposes, ie wagging the dog, to divert people from judging how Trump handled the crisis and reaffirm he has no blame or responsibility.

Of course it's necessarily wrong. It's the latest phase of an ongoing campaign, starting at least since Obama's "Pivot to Asia," to threaten, encircle, and undermine China because the US fears China's threat to its hegemony. Why did the US foreign policy establishment get so bent out of shape at the prospect of a peace treaty in Korea? Peace in Korea removes one of the major excuses for US military buildup near China.

Oz agreed to join in the opinion to investigate China as a man made source. Now we get our  bottom  smacked  economically.

' In the space of a few days, China has dealt heavy blows to both Australian barley and beef industries, raising suspicions that Beijing is using trade to punish Canberra for lending support to the international call to investigate the origins of the coronavirus pandemic. :'
