Oh so many greats! Where to start? I'm often a sucker for physical comedy. From Buster Keaton through Eric Andre.

I find comedy and humor to be high skills for internal development.

Being able to transmute anger to laughter is perhaps one of my most cultivated skills this lifetime.

I spent years traveling and performing comedy myself with a troupe and solo.

George Carlin - number one for me.  He always struck me as more of an adroit social commentarian than a pure comedian, particularly his last three decades of work... and as I've come to read more Chuang Tze, I view George as a modern version of him in the way he uses humor to point out social absurdities.

Gilda Radner

Lilly Tomlin

Carol Burnett

Jane Curtin

Phyllis Diller

Lenny Bruce

Jack Benny

Bob Newhart

Richard Pryor

Robin Williams

Bill Hicks

Eddie Izzard (few make history so funny)

Doug Stanhope (king of irreverent humor)

Tracey Ullman

Madeline Kahn

off the top of my head.

eta:

Rea Pearlman

Tina Fey

Lewis Black

IMO, he was the true roast master.. and the most intelligent comedy rarely seen.

Mr Bean,- Atkinson ,close second.. ,Tina Fey doing Sarah Palin.

Oh boy those were funny!

Also the crews of Seinfeld and Monty Python, those had more staying power, George Carlin ,also great , but that was a lot agreeing more than just hearty laughing.

Does anybody remember wonderful Marty Feldman

Not really, just the part of Igore in that movie, Young Frankenstein?

My mother was first proposed to by Buster Keaton - I like his stuff

We have a cargo case given to my mother by his mother.

I used to play poker with Steve Martin prior to his fame - I’ve enjoyed his writing and when he first hit the scene he put all of us on the floor.

Jonathan Winters was the best improv multiple personality master.

No body prior to Prior quite like Prior.

Jim Gaffigan is fun for the whole family and he comes with his own whispering critic

Chappelle is deep

Groucho was no bodies fool - in credible - like Buster Keaton he was his own man

Although easily overlooked as juvenile buffoonery, I feel that Jim Varney's Ernest P. Worrell character embodies a certain kind of genius. Even evoking the philosophical foundations of an uncarved block of wood. Know what I mean, Vern?

Honorable mention also to Paul "Pee Wee" Reubens, whose career crippling arrest for whacking it in an X-rated theater was in a way itself the ultimate act of comedy.

Not comedians in the typical sense, but I've been cracking up while watching the show, Impractical Jokers.

Surprised no one has mentioned Robin Williams. Jim Carrey is right there too. Mike Myers, and going back a ways, Gene Wilder.

We haven't mentioned any of our favorite 'unintentional' comedians.

Those who are hysterical, without intending to be so...

Newscasters and politicians.

Any longer when i watch them, are drop dead funny, particularly when they are striving to be so serious...

-or could have been any comedy show where the quip was just satire
