Call to Vikings!

Recommended Posts

Cabin fever already. Fishing is done; not hunting this year; not enough snow to Ski/Shoe; just yucky spit-sleet.... but that'll all change soon enough. (-:

I'm building a Nordic chalet !!

Well, okay, I'm having the tiny structure's shell built but I'll be doing all the interior finishing. (-:

All the constant electronics humming here in the cabin are fuzzing up my head, so my Chalet will have no wiring or other modern things... just comfy seating, wood furnishings & windows & candles & a little Jøtul for heat. I'll carry in water or melt snow for tea.

Viking posters & things & my old skis will be on the walls & a Hnefatafl game set up..ready to take on any brave challengers. Ha!

Also, it will be the perfect place to practice my kantele. Someday maybe I'll be this good :D

Anyone else have over-winter projects?

you might want to look into having a few solar cells for a little bit of power to run low voltage lights, especially now that there are excellent low voltage LED lights!  (at 12volts) Candles are romantic but not much good for anything else, kerosene lamps give a lot more light but are messy and kind of a fire hazard to boot.  Good luck,  Btw. if you have an emergency an emergency generator is not a bad idea to have for running a communications radio/CB,  charge a dead car battery, charge a phone, or run a TV for updates on extreme weather or fire  condition's.  (of course I'm saying most of this thinking you are far from getting help if need be?)

Hiya 3bob!

Those are great ideas, thanks (-:

We  have all those things in the main cabin and my chalet is within running distance lol so I have the luxury of staying primative...with the exception of a radio for music, run off batteries charged up with solar, on a thingy MH designed & I'm going to build as soon as I get the materials.

Thanks for joining in!

I'm blond and everyone says I have viking features.  Probably from the Norwegian on my Mum's side.  Never been there though - can I still join the club?

If Athelstan can become one of the Vikings, so can you!

I feel the pull always.  I don't think I even have any direct viking lineage  (except my british blood, with U.K being invaded by Viking).

I enjoy culture and mythology, but then Nordic mythology is another level for me.  When I was kid I dressed up as a warrior with sword and shield, I would fight for injustice and save the world!!!  (And still want to).  That's why the pull.  I would love to learn the ways of viking battle, weaponcraft, ship-building.  If I believe in nothing else, I would believe in the power of one man to charge into the fray, regardless of enemy, that fortune would favour him, and even if he lose, that his bravery would inspire others to take up the cause, and have a similar measure of courage (what some would call foolishness).

Please continue this great thread.

I have some north Germanic genes for sure. Was interested in that stuff many years ago, I prefer the hygge to the viking nowadays.

:) Welcome, kondensation. The inner reflection found in hygge doesn't exclude viking, imo... just the opposite!! What better stories could there be to share around the fire. B)

Nice stove & Jotul fan here too. We've got the F55 Carrabasset in the main cabin. Sounds like that would have been a good party! Feel free to bring the boys with you next time at the longtable. We always welcome strong young blood. ^_^

I hang out, sometimes, over in zerostao's PPD for the joy of kindred spirit - and ran across his words from last Christmas time...

Last night at a red kneck christmas party full blown anarky at its finest

fines herbes and high quality spices of all kinds

smiles

and medicine, the best medicine; Laughter Hugs Festive Friends

and the twinkling eyes of those possessed by the spirit of anarchy aka Freedom

everyone

just behind the police station

the anarckia ideal here is so strong that the police are Peace Officers

which makes things easy for them and us all

because in anarckia Peace resides Naturally

and enforcing laws would be too damn problematic for all concerned

whether the rest get it or not no worries

all is safe here in anarckia

if you are tired weary downtrodden

down on your luck

or just looking for the next coolest adventure

remember in anarckia is where the coolest penguins live

in celebration of Freedom

last night a golden teacher was present

i was offered with the disclaimer

that the golden teacher teaches a dislike for cops or governments

i was like well i am naturally inclined towards those already

i joined in the lesson

me and my dankiest danks in the bluegrass

i can never bad mouth the Peace Officers

with their smiles and twinkling eyes

Anarckia. The modern philosophical home-land of Vikings. Well, for some of us anyway. :)

They are. The Jotul I picked for the Chalet is small - but more than big enough. Glad there'll be lots of windows too so I dont get baked out! :D I scaled down the size - to not have to cut down trees but still keep the spot - and it's now more of a ski warming hut lol.  It will look like this; fir siding & cedar trim etc...but with a steeper roof, a lot bigger covered deck and more windows and a steep peaked covered entry off the side. First, though, our 5' of snow has to melt away. LOL

Banging around the Danish Viking sites...I ran across this:

Quote

The seeresses of the Viking period

Viking seeresses

Henbane is one of Denmark's most poisonous plants. Photo: Bjoerntvedt.

Völuspá:The prophecy of the seeress

Seeresses possessed such strong powers that even the king of the gods, Odin, could benefit from their help and advice.

In “Völuspá:The prophecy of the seeress” – a  poem from the Elder Edda – an old man visits a seeress, as he wishes to know the future and what the fate of the world will be. He looks poor and miserable, but as he has only one eye the seeress recognises him immediately as Odin.

Odin offers the völva his necklace and ring as payment for telling him the future. She then begins to inform him about the creation of the world, the first gods and people, as well as the end of the world – Ragnarök, when gods will do battle with giants. The seeress also describes how after Ragnarök, the all-destructive war, the world will rise again. But she also sees that evil will return to the world.

Viking Seeresses

The short article lightly describes the process of how the Seeress do what they do: Seid (soul travel), etc.

Very interesting read!

Edit to add: The page translator (to English) sometimes goes sideways, always good for a chuckle or two, but you'll get the gist.
